Day 3 draft (update) Comments

Jun11

Oregon State RHP Greg Peavey was picked by the Houston Astros in the 32nd round with the 971st pick. He’s a sophomore with two more years of eligibility, so expect him to come back next year.

“I have some decision making to do,” Peavey said. “I don’t know with this. As of right now I’m ready to be a Beaver next year.”

OF Adalberto Santos got the call in the 35th round with the 1,044th pick by the San Diego Padres. Expect him to come back, too.

Read my main draft story in Thursday’s GT here. It has interviews with all four Beavers drafted yesterday – C Ryan Ortiz, RHP Jorge Reyes, LHP Kraig Sitton and SS Joey Wong.

Read my draft notebook in Thursday’s GT here. It has stuff on incoming recruits, how the Ducks did and other players with in-state ties.

OSU football recruit Jordan Poyer of Astoria High was drafted as a CF in the 42nd round by the Florida Marlins. Poyer told me in a commitment story that he would see how the draft went, but was very solid about playing football. He didn’t expect to go high, which he didn’ We’ll have to see how that plays out during the summer.

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Poyer. He still plans to play football for the Beavers. He’s enrolled for this summer.

“I’m still set on playing football for the Beavers,” Poyer said. “I made up my mind in April, if I didn’t get a certain amount of money I was going to Oregon State for football.”

Poyer heads to Canton, Ohio, this weekend to play for the United States in an international football tournament for a month and then arrives in Corvallis in the middle of July to prepare for the season.

Casey Campbell | Gazette-Times Oregon State's Joey Wong makes a tough throw across his body to first during the Beavers' game against Washington State on May 15.

SS Joey Wong was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 24th round with the 721 pick.

UPDATE: Wong says he’s not so sure he’ll sign. “I have a decision to make in the next couple of days,” he said. “I’d rather make the decision in the next few days.”

Wong said he was disappointed in where he went. He heard he would go higher. If he does not sign, he’ll head to the Cape Cod League during the summer and concentrate on getting stronger and faster to improve his stock for next year.

Incoming recruit RHP Tony Bryant was picked by the Minnesota Twins in the 25th round with the 762th pick.

More picks (udpated) Comments

ANDY CRIPE | Gazette-Times Oregon State starting pitcher Jorge Reyes struck out six and allowed just one run over seven innings

RHP Jorge Reyes was selected in the 17th round by the San Diego Padres with the 504th pick.

LHP Kraig Sitton was drafted in the 17th round with the 528th pick by the Boston Red Sox.

Incoming freshman C Andrew Susac of Jesuit High in Carmichael, Calif., was selected in the 16th round with the 497th pick by the Philadelphia Phillies. He could have gone higher, but he was vocal about playing for the Beavers.

Former OSU LHP Blake Keitzman, now at Western Oregon, was drafted in the 15th round by the Seattle Mariners.

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Sitton and Reyes. Sitton wants to come back to the Beavers. He’s a sophomore, so that’s a good move. He’s also an academic guy.

Reyes is a little disappointed where he was drafted. He’s in the range where he may consider coming back because the money isn’t life changing. He’s going to think about it for a while.

However, the Padres excite him.

“It’s awesome about the team,” Reyes said. “I’ve been following the Padres since (former teammate) Mitch (Canham) got drafted, and he said nothing but good things about them. I like where all their (minor league) teams are. That’s a big thing.”
