Last year the Beavers wanted to run as many plays as possible when the offense went against the defense. Coach Mike Riley plans to slow it down and pay attention to details this year. “I’m looking forward to teaching, and we need to get it right,” Riley said. “We are going to take our time with installation and teaching. You won’t see a lot of interaction with the offense and defense for the first few days.” This move should have been done last year when everyone was so new. They needed to learn how to do it right instead of going fast. Other practice changes include the 11 a.m. start time that I already address and taking Sunday off and practicing Monday during the season. The Beavers usually met on Sunday to go over film and workout, but not really practice. Then they took Monday off and had three days of practice to get ready for the next game.
The idea was that the one less practice a week kept them fresh at the end, while others were worn out. Well, that hasn’t worked the last two years so a change was needed.

“I’ve been toying with that and talking to people about that for a while,” Riley said. “There are problems with it. I love seeing guys on Sunday, but we can balance things out better. Instead of practice for two hours we’ll do it for but an hour-and-a-half for four days.”

Oregon State football coach Mike Riley seemed calm and focused yesterday when he talked with the media about the upcoming season. The highlights were on my blog yesterday. Here’s the full story in Thursday’s GT. He said the usually things such as being excited for the season, has a good vibe from the group and doesn’t feel outside pressure. However, when reading Riley it’s about how he says it and now what he says. Riley was descriptive when said he feels like a rookie coach with something to prove. He knows outsiders don’t think he’ll do well, but believes he can. The practice approach is different with a focus on details, instead of speeding through a practice like Oregon. I’ll have more on that later. And part of his change is my guess that he’s going to call the plays this season. Repeat, it’s only my guess. He was asked, and said he’ll call plays at the beginning of training camp. And then he was probed more about the season.
OSU looked at the roster at Penn State to go after some players, if they were were Northwest guys. There were no, so OSU didn’t go after any. “And I don’t feel comfortable doing that,” Riley said.

Riley will continue to call the players in practice early in training camp, but wouldn’t say if that will continue in the games.

Practices were moved to 11 a.m. in camp so the team can have meetings first, the practice. Practices stay at 11 a.m. in the season so players can have class at 8 a.m. and in the afternoon.

As many of you know, I write for Lindy’s Sports when it comes to Oregon State football team topics. The annual preview edition of the magazine is out, so let’s look at how Lindy’s forecasts the season. The top-10 going into the season is: 1. LSU, 2. USC, 3. Alabama, 4. Oklahoma, 5. Oregon, 6. Georgia, 7. Michigan, 8. Florida State, 9. Arkansas, 10. West Virginia. Wisconsin, OSU’s second opponent this season, is No. 17 and Stanford is No. 21. Oregon State checks in at No. 65 in that nation, No. 11 in the Pac-12 and last in the North.
As many of you know, I write for Lindy’s Sports when it comes to Oregon State football team topics.

The annual preview edition of the magazine is out, so let’s look at how Lindy’s forecasts the season.

The top-10 going into the season is: 1. LSU, 2. USC, 3. Alabama, 4. Oklahoma, 5. Oregon, 6. Georgia, 7. Michigan, 8. Florida State, 9. Arkansas, 10. West Virginia.
