The Knights warm up between innings Thursday against Bellingham.

I was at the Corvallis Knights baseball game on Thursday night. Check out the game story in Friday’s GT.

The Knights are pretty good again this summer, but are not playing at their peak yet. Perfect Game ranked them the No. 13 summer collegiate team in the nation.

They have been on a hot streak and are in the lead of the West Coast League West Division over the Bend Elks by 6.5 games.

For the Oregon State connection, C Nate Esposito started and went 0-for-2. He’s hitting .333 on the season. And RHP Taylor Starr made his relief appearance and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings. He picked up a save in his first outing.

Another baseball story of note in Friday’s GT is my look at the issues youth baseball faces in the area.

The Knights at-bat against Bellingham.

Numbers are dropping in Little League and JBO (Junior Baseball Organization). There are many issues you can read about, but the main reason is the Beavers.

When the Beavers went to the College Worlds Series three years in a row (2005-07) that sparked interest in the area where everyone wanted their child to play the game.

The Beavers, however, ended up in five national polls at the end of the season. They were No. 23 (Perfect Game), No. 22 (NCBWA, USA Today/ESPN), No. 24 (Baseball America) and No. 25 (Collegiate Baseball).
