The Oregon State football team will play Michigan in 2015, AD Bob De Carolis announced Wednesday.
UPDATE: OSU confirmed to me that this is not part of the Pac-12/Big Ten deal. There will be no return date.
The Sept. 19 game will be played in Michigan Stadium, the largest college football venue in the nation with a capacity of 109,901.
It will be the fifth meeting with the Wolverines. Three of the games have been in Ann Arbor, Mich. The most recent game was Sept. 20, 1986. OSU and Michigan also met in the 1964 Rose Bowl.
De Carolis was an athletic administrator at Michigan from 1979-98, and was the softball coach for four years.
Michigan coach Brady Hoke was an assistant at OSU from 1989-94 under coaches Dave Kragthorpe and Jerry Pettibone.
“This is an exciting opportunity for our student-athletes, staff and fans to visit not only one of the great venues in college football but all of sports,” De Carolis said in a press released. “But make no mistake, we will make this trip with the goal of winning a football game.”

The assumption is that this will be part of the Pac-12/Big 10 (B1G) non-conference scheduling arrangement, so the question is when will the return game be?
The days of un-winnable road games that do not have at least a return date are supposed to be a thing of the past.

You bet me to big question AndyPanda, When will the return game be? Now that the Pac-12 and Big 10 have the new scheduling arrangement we should expect them to come to Corvallis.

I can understand that it might take a while, given that schedules already have a lot of boxes filled in.
We are all used to seeing return games sometimes being several years apart, and that’s understandable, but it’s hard to believe the release from OSU doesn’t address this not so small detail in any way.

I agree. When the Beavers go to a Michigan or a LSU and play only at their stadium without a return trip that puts them in the same catagory as Nicholls State.

The game will also actually be on Sept. 19, not Sept. 15, which is a Tuesday.

Obviously with no home/home deal BDC is offering us up in return for a big payday. This reeks of a pay for play deal with OSU as the sacrificial lamb and given no respect. Maybe we will surprise them as the big house is no longer the intimidation it once was (see Appalacian State and Oregon 2007, Toledo (2008) and we get the last laugh.

Lloyd Carr was still the coach at Michigan when Michigan came to Oregon first in 2002 and in 2007 Oregon had a better team than Michigan.

Apparently the Pac12-B1G deal doesn’t start until 2017. Michgan is also playing Colorado and Utah, with Utah getting them at home.

The scheduling arrangement isn’t going to be fully implemented until then, due to pre-existing schedule contracts all over the place, but where the opportunities exist, games are being plugged in. It means some will see a quick turnaround, like the following year (the Michigan-Utah series, for example), while others situations will take several seasons before there is an opportunity to balance things out.
At some point, Colorado and Oregon St. are due a return date. A buyoff of those games shouldn’t be necessary to balance the budget instead anymore, with the revised media deals. Personally, I’m still concerned about whether those return visits may find a way to evaporate before the scheduling arrangement has time to run its course.
Michigan is suspending their series with Notre Dame for 2 years later on this decade, in order to free up the 1 non-conference road trip they are willing to make per year, but it will still take a long time to work through this.

I love tough scheduling. I wish we could a few of these games. I agree with all the other posts. No home at homes makes us look like a team others can pad their stats with. I do like that we’ve had a home at home against Wisc.

They are going to be pretty disappointed when the Beavers walk into their house and win the game. They are afraid of coming to Corvallis. I don’t care if that statement is true or not, they think they are going to get an easy win and it’s not going to happen.

Hopefully you are right, but history, even Riley-era history, is on their side.

When was the last time the Beavers won a game like this, where they went and played at the opponents home field with no return game? LSU, nope. Penn State nope. We may have to go back to the ’60′s versus Purdue for the last time we won a game like this. But the Beavers keep scheduleing these games for the money….

Oregon State beat Temple in Philadelphia (at UPenn’s home field, technically) in 2002 with no return, although one was scheduled at the time. (The Beavers later cancelled the return in favor of taking the LSU game.) I believe the true answer to your question is 1978, when Oregon State beat Minnesota. Some close calls since, though: Kansas State in ’79 (22-16), LSU in ’81 (27-24), Ohio State in ’84 (22-14), Colorado in ’88 (28-21), Hawaii in ’89 (23-21), and LSU in ’04 (22-21).

The big question is. Will Riley still be Coach in 2015? Will DL be there? Will BobbyD be AD? And again BobbyD is serving us up with a loss for a Big Payday. Without thinking it through, and providing Riley is still the Coach and DL is still there, that year we will be breaking in a new QB. And we know the history with 1st year QB’s during Riley’s tenure. Hope for more than a miracle, it will be needed.
BeaverDon says:
Jun 27, 2012
Dang, you are right! Mannion will be gone and the Beavers will have a new QB with only the Weber State game behind him. And as for the question of “will Riley still be Coach”, Riley is the Beaver Coach until he decides to leave.
OS_Beaver says:
Jun 27, 2012
Not if Riley continues to stink up the joint. You have to win to keep a job in the Pac-12. Larry Scott is raising the standard all around and not even OSU will be an exception for much longer. Unless we are satisfied with being basement dwellars. Riley better get 6 or 7 wins this year or it is best to move on. A Sun Bowl in 12 years is a pretty darn low pinnacle. Pretty sad that that is all he can do in a dozen years.
It really isn’t that difficult to move on when someone has had so long and not accomplished anything to get noticed. A higher standard needs to be expected. If you can’t reach it someone else can. There will be precious few Pac-12 head coach opeings after this season and any job in the Pac-12 is a premier job. We just have to start acting like it.
73GradMike says:

While I agree with you that Riley should be held accountable to start winning or move on, I doubt that BobbyD would give Riley LESS than 2 more years based on “potential” alone. Even after that, I believe that Dr.Ray would need to appoint a new AD before Riley is asked to leave prior to the end of his contract.
Unfortunately, OSU is likely to be perpetually in the lower half of the Pac-12 unless we luck out and get some late-blooming stars. Evidence suggests that OSU’s current offensive and defensive schemes are unlikely to overcome other teams in the conference.

Just an utter embarrassment to take another no-return game against a big name team for money. Like others, I though OSU was done scheduling big payday games with no return that make the program look pathetic. With the new Pac-12 TV money there is just no excuse for this. Tough schedules would be fine if everyone did it (and to be honest, if OSU actually won one now and then but they usually just get blown out by massive margins further embarrassing the program on national TV) but we’ve seen time and time again how it only hurts a team. Go 3-0 against a bunch of nobodies and you’re far better off in terms of bowl games and polls than if you go 1-2 against good teams. Also, with the Pac-12 being the only major conference playing 9 conference games we’re already at a disadvantage schedule wise.
There is simply no upside to this besides the big payday. I really am starting to think it’s time for some serious changes at the top.
BeaverDon says:
Jun 27, 2012
How big can this payday really be? We are getting $20 mil a year from the new media contract, we get an equal share of all the Bowl revenue. So what is the monetary difference between say playing San Diego State or Hawaii in a home and home series.
And I have to also say, just what is the upside to tough scheuduling? We are the ONLY Conference that plays 9 Conference games. It doesn’t seem to hurt the other conferences to schedule winnable games. So what is the upside here? The Beavers go into Ann Arbor with a untested QB and we are told that in Riley’s system it takes a QB 1 season to get comfortable with the system. Is Michigan the best choice to send a new QB against? The only players now with the Beavers who will be playing in 2015 are true Freshman or those who redshrt this year.
I just don’t see the need to schedule this game without getting a return game out of it.

BeaverDon says:

The Beavers will get $1 million for playing at Michigan? Serioiusly? And they would pay SDSU or UNLV $250,000 for playing in Corvallis?
Cliff Kirkpatrick says:

That’s the kind of money it got for LSU and Penn State.

I think the Big 12 plays 9 conference games too so they have the same “problem” as we have. The question is does scheduling a road game against Michigan (with no return game) more lucrative than a home game against UNLV or similar school?
rejectmediocrity says:

This is a stupid and desparate move on the part of our administration to schedule a game in which we almost certainly will be clobbered again on national tv. No return date. The money is not worth it. We will again start the year with a losing record immediately taking us out of any chance for high national standings (i.e. the new national championship playoff-I know, remember the Appalacian State miracle of few years back- but not likely). More likely that a few of our out- of- shape players will get their bell’s wrung by a much more physical Michigan team and be out for the year injured (history likely to repeat itself). We should have learned our lesson by now not to do this. Do you want another Penn State, etc., just so you can say you played a game with a big boy? Not me! (Of course if you lose to Sacramento State I guess you can’t schedule anyone anymore who you can beat, so o well, lets play Michigan, a loss is a loss). A game like this puts totally unnecessary pressure on a new coach (hopefully by then) trying to rebuild a crumbling program. We need wins, not more humiliations. DeCarolis should be fired for doing this. Riley should be fired for sticking with his inept assistants who are bringing our program back into the 1970-90 era, and for allowing htis game to be scheduled.

I don’t like this game. Are we supposed to rejoice in getting set up for another butt kicking? I get the feeling that Beaver fans are supposed to be giddy about just having the “opportunity” to play Michigan in the “biggest venue in college football”. What is our AD thinking, I just don’t understand the thought process here.

Phill, will Sean get to play 5 years. I thought players could only play 4. 2012 soph./ 2013 junior/ 2014 senior./ 2015 Oh thats right Super Senior. This Game is a Hedge bet for BobbyD. If things don’t go well the next couple years, the revenue will make up for lost revenue at the gate from Fan exodus. Its a must to schedule patsies now days. The lost practices from not getting to a Bowl, any Bowl, hurts programs like OSU. Get rid of the OS.

Its not just about the money. Teams are aware of the history and what happens to most top ranked teams when they go to Corvallis…..they lose. That’s why most of the big teams you see playing the Beavers only play them at home.
