Thanks to the Rivals.com folks who track high school and JC athletes and their recruiting, here are some notes of interest.
The Oregon State football team is up to 103 known scholarship offers, but no commitments yet. The Beavers are the only major conference team without a commitment at this point.
Rivals believe the slow start is due to the change in coaching staff getting adjusted and the recent losing. Another thing to point out is that the players are so young, no one wants to be stuck low on the depth chart.
The QB, RB, DE and TE positions are loaded with underclassmen starters. There are seven new OL coming in. The LB and DB positions have some young starters and underclassmen primed to take over.
So we’ll go over the offensive guys first with offers, and get to the defensive guys later.
The three pro-style QBs of interest committed elsewhere. There are two three-star running QBs with offers.
Nine RB have offers with the five-star, Thomas Tyner from Beaverton, going to Oregon. One of the three four-stars in the group is going to USC.
There are 14 WRs offered — eight four-stars and two of them going to USC. There are six TEs offered and the one four-star is going to Ohio State.
There are 10 OL offered, two four-stars, and two three-stars are going elsewhere already. One outstanding offer is to a JC guy.
It looks like the Beavers blanketed all the areas and are looking for the best possible guy. There’s no areas ignored.

I’d have to think that DT is a huge priority and hope to see us making some moves to give us some depth there.

so let me get this straight. we cant recruit because we have new coaches and young players. it could have anything to do with sucking the last two years could it? besides, as others have pointed out, we are very thin at several spots. what’s todays excuse for not signing those positions. Cliff, you are in full apologist mode here. get with it. this is the latest in a long line of failures that keep mounting.
the real issue is there isnt much to sell. there is no buzz around osu football. oh sorry, i forgot we are going to slap a coat of paint on the west side of the stadium some time this decade. my bad.

“We can’t recruit”…..bit of an overstatement at this point, especially considering the quality of last years class….It’s June 13, Maybe wait a month or two and let the recruiting season play out?

what was our rank in the p12 of last years class? you know, the people those guys are going to compete against the next 5 years.

OSU has never had top rankings for recruits even in the better days. Rankings are somewhat suspect but yes the top athletes from High school don’t have a tendency to come to OSU….are you somehow surprised? This isn’t exactly a new issue…..and yes last years class was pretty good because it addressed some needs on the Oline. The Beavs still need DL’s and DB’s for depth. I don’t care what the rankings say, OSU will be better in the next few years.

i dont either. i care what our record is. its a cute story when the recruiting class sucks and we get 7 or 8 wins but when your recruiting class sucks and you get 5 then 3 wins its not cute anymore. by recruiting so poorly our margin for error is razor thin. that is what we have been seeing. i agree that we never have been a top recruiting school. in the fiesta bowl year we were an injury away from disaster. got lucky. I do feel that we should and could do much better than we have. this years class is already behind the competition by a long way. its cause for concern. all we here from riley is how he doesnt like the system as is. well, its the system he has to operate in. crying about it wont get results. this is a valid concern and people should not be labled as negative when they are mad about a bad situation that all indicators point to it getting worse.
Tagup says:

Well I just think that judging the indicators on June 15th is premature….We can judge when the letters come in on the fax machine in Feb..until then it’s all speculation anyway. Having a player “commit” means squat as we saw last year…..so why start the bitch fest now?

I keep hearing this rumor that the AD is planning to simply paint the west side of Reser. Where did this information come from? I sure hope this isn’t true.

Not to be condescending, but what does OSU have to offer to 4-5 star recruits that even compare to the other Pac-12 schools? Where would you rank Reser Stadium with the other stadiums in the Pac-12? As much as it pains me to say, I would rank Reser eleventh, only ahead of WSU’s current Martin stadium. Losing to your rival 5 years in a row doesn’t help with recruiting, having 2 losing seasons in a row doesn’t help either. Even when OSU does win, they don’t win decisively very often, its as though they barely escape defeat. Add that to a stadium that desperately needs completion in any hopes of staying competitive, especially when Cal, Washington and WSU are currently upgrading their own to modern masterpieces for stadiums. OSU is once again playing catch up to everyone else. Recruits are lured into colleges based upon winning, facilities, prolific offenses, winning, getting into the NFL, TV exposure, for some academics, and I forgot to mention how important winning is to recruits. Soon, even Boise State will have a better stadium and facilities than OSU. 20 years ago they were basically a community college! I think OSU needs new leadership and more focused direction for their athletic program. The apologetic, feel sorry for us, were lucky just to exist and field a team approach is not working, and it must be fixed soon. I bleed Black and Orange, but does it even matter anymore? Does our athletic department really care about its fanbase anymore? They are more than willing to take our money, but will they even try to listen to us? Beaver Nation will be voting with their feet this upcoming fall (season tickets are down big time), the AD might be listening then. This is not a reflection of the players and I will always support them and cheer them on. I guess I will have to lower my expectations for the football program to the way things were 20+ years ago, and forget about the early 2000′s. Those years have passed us by and are just a fleeting memory, and a bit of a fluke if you will.

REMEMBER ME, I OPENED THE DOOR TWO WEEKS AGO THAT THE BEAVS WERE THE ONLY PAC 12 SCHOOL WITHOUT A RECRUIT. NOTHING HAS CHANGED EXCEPT THAT WE ARE TWO WEEKS FURTHER INTO THE PROCESS AND THE BETTER PLAYERS ARE SIGNING WITH OTHER SCHOOLS. THE PROBLEM STARTED AND HAS BEEN COMPOUNDED BY OUR PATHETIC OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR AND HIS LACK OF KEEPING UP WITH THE TIMES. THAT, PLUS RILEY’S HORIBLE DECISON TO KEEP HIM ONBOARD IN THAT POSITON. DEcAROLIS CLEARLY IS A GOOD OLD BOY AND DOESN’T HAVE THE GUTS OR INTELLEGENCE TO MAKE CHANGES WHEN NEEDED. NUMEROUS SEASON TICKET HOLDERS FROM THE PAST HAVE INDICATED TO ME THEY WILL NOT RENEW DO TO THE POOR QUALITY OF WHAT THEY SEE OUR PROGRAM TO BE ON THE FIELD. AND AS FAR AS YOU RILEY APOLOGISTS, YOU ARE THE POOR BEAVER SUPPORTS AS YOU WILL SINK WITH THE SHIP WITH A GLASS OF WINE TOASTING RILEY ALL THE WAY DOWN INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE TOILET.

“Rivals believe the slow start is due to the change in coaching staff getting adjusted and the recent losing.”
Clif, I must have missed something. Changing a position coach or two should not hurt recruiting like this. Mike’s friends Mark and Danny are just not taking care of business, do they even care anymore???
Cliff Kirkpatrick says:

Keith Heyward was a good recruiter. His replacement, Rod Perry, is still figuring it out.
The LB coach, Trent Bray, is officially a GA. He can’t recruit. OSU is depending on other coaches to find LBs this year.

Oh boy, Riley. And oh boy, PAC-12. I feel like Oregon State just joined the conference, coming from a JC league. I’ll be ‘happy’ to see 12 recruits sign and a 3 win mark for next season. Riley doesn’t have it anymore. PAC-12 is making us choke on the dust we once helped produce. Is there any way out of this hole that was dug by losing seasons, poor recruiting, a below-average stadium, and a coach that doesn’t show any urgency? Yes, there is. We have to change EVERYTHING I just listed. And the work starts….now.
Tagup says:
Jun 13, 2012
So how does a coach show you enough “urgency”….??
Beavs Believe says:
Jun 13, 2012
It really cracks me up how people talk about Coach Riley like they just got done playing for him. In reality, they have no idea what his coaching style is or how he motivates his players. I know a parent of one of the players, and he’s probably a lot more intense then anyone who watches football knows.

Sadly recruits we go after early have hopes of getting other offers from more successful programs so they won’t commit. Many of our recruits (like last year) wait till the last minute to commit because they didn’t get an offer from a school in a BCS conference. Over half of our recruits had no other offers at all or had no offers from BCS schools so clearly we get a lot of recruits that have been passed over. However, to his credit, Riley has developed many of these “leftover” kids into Pac12 and NFL talent. But finding a gem from group of average to below average recruits should be left to the UTEP or New Mexico, not OSU. We need a better group of talent to begin with so we can build depth.
Riley is a victim of his own success. He has raised our expectations and now we demand meh more. It’s time he delivers.

Settle down!! All of these commitments are “verbals”. Nothing is written in stone…..yet. Give our new coaches/recruiters a chance to get there feet under them and get in front of some of these kids. Key word is “kids”. How often did you change your mind when you were 17-18 yrs old? We do have an advantage on the offensive side. The Beavs run a Pro style offense, which translates well to the next level. The spread offense does not. It allows for some ridiculous stats, but pro scouts don’t care about that. On D, I think we need an upgrade at coordinator. I love seeing Perry come to town and would really like to see Riley let his friend go and hire someone with some name recognition. We need to be able to sell to recruits that choosing OS, will give them the chance to accel in a “Pro” style system, with former Pro’s coaching them up!
