Check out these video interviews from the Oregon State football team.
The first one is of QB Sean Mannion talking about being voted a captain by his teammates.
He also gives you updated from how the Beavers are doing this offseason.
I know the video was edited to make it go smooth, but that was Mannion’s best interview ever. He’s maturing as a person, and that will translate on the field.
The second one is defensive standout CB Jordan Poyer. He gives us the latest update on himself, and being voted a captain by his teammates.

This answers the question from the previous blog about the selectiion of captains wherein the possibility was open that Riley alone made the choice.
So, as a Soph, Mannion is voted Cap’n by his peers while as a Soph, and as a Jr, Katz was not……..hmmm…………

You’re right oldbeav, this says a lot about the regression of the OS football program over the last couple of years. This year the pickings were so slim that a kid whose name showed up on the police blotter in the off season, and a sophomore for the first time in program history were elected captains. Don’t get me wrong, I actually think both kids are good kids, and nice selections as captains for this years team. However, I think this says just as much about the drop off in talent and leadership that has plagued Riley’s program over the past few years. And it certainly does not have anything to do with Katz. Katz never played on an OS team without at least one captain named Rodgers, so obviously the competition for captain on those teams was significantly higher. Those teams belonged to the Rodgers brothers, and if we had anyone left with that talent or leadership ability, they most certainly would have been elected captain by this years team. Instead, we are left with one captain who made a questionable decision in the off season that embarrassed the team a little, and a Sophomore with still a whole lot to prove. Do you really think that either one of these guys is elected captain over James Rodgers if he was still around?

come on man, Katz was given a chance. He didn’t respond to the pressure

So, you bash both the picks – “This year the pickings were so slim that a kid whose name showed up on the police blotter in the off season, and a sophomore for the first time in program history were elected captains” – Then you say you like the picks… I’m pretty sure you’re just finding every chance to say something negative. That’s a pretty dark world to live in. You’re comparing these guys to one of the most prolific players OS has ever had play here. Pretty unfair. You need to get over Katz. I really appreciate what he did for us, and that he came to OSU and contributed, but he got out-played.
Jordan Poyer is a fantastic cornerback, and probably one of the best OS has had in a number of years. It would have been outrageous if he wasn’t one of our captains. I’m pretty sure at this point, you’re just looking for places for your anger to go.

Check the first post…..I’m not the one who brought up Katz. Maybe it’s you guys who need to get over Katz. I just didn’t think that oldbeav’s shot at Katz was fair.

damn Fraud, let it go. Enough about Katz. He is gone, we all wish him well. We have Mannion now, deal with it. IF you dislike everything that is going on with the OSU football program then go follow the Ducks. Your bs is old. We have what we have and we need to support them. This team has potential. Be positive and quit the bitching.

Right….because I’m the one who brought up Katz here. A little defensive there aaron?

Ahhhhhh…..I see once again I’ve hit a sensitive nerve with Beaver Nation. Anybody actually want to try and respond to the real point of my post, which is actually a pretty valid point. That these captains could just as easily be seen as a troubling sign of the program as an encouraging sign. Don’t deflect on the Katz thing, as I did not bring Katz up on this thread. I just thought oldbeav took a very unnecessary shot at the kid.

Ill take a freshman all-american qb as well as an early round NFL corner any day as captains…

^ This. How is it a bad sign that our quarterback becomes the youngest Captain in the history of the program? I don’t follow your logic – “Dang, this kid is so good, that our team voted him as a captain as a Sophomore. This program is really going down hill!” – I’m not on that train with you…
rileysafraud says:

Maybe it’s because he’s so good. But a lot remains to be seen. On the other side of that argument, he was second in the country in INT’s last year with 18. He is definitely one of our best players going into this season, and probably a deserving captain for this year’s team. But saying that about a guy who almost led the country in a negative stat is more than a little alarming to me.

Maybe Mannion was chosen by his teammates because of his leadership and work ethic….He clearly has made an impression on the team. OR…maybe Mannion’s father blackmailed the entire team. Hmm…..

Dude we did this last year with you. It gets old. It’s the same stuff over and over with you. It isnt a sensitive spot its just that you are beating a dead horse. I have been on Cliffs blog for years now and i have never seen someone on here as repetitive as you. At first you had some interesting and valid comments, but after a while it wears on you. It like when a parent is yells at you time and time again, eventually all we hear from you is blah, blah, blah, blah…..
rileysafraud says:
Jun 13, 2012
You’re tired of hearing about all of my repetitive posts from last year about this year’s captains??????? This is the first time I have ever made these points, because frankly, I couldn’t have offered an opinion on captains who hadn’t been selected yet.
If all you are hearing is blah, blah, blah…..why bother spending your valuable time responding. Perhaps there are still some “interesting and valid” points being made, and that is what is truly annoying you.

POYER talks about RESPONSIBILITY. OH BOY.
Really?
Were you responsible Mr. Poyer when you were arrested for trespassing a couple weeks ago at the same dive bar your teammate got into a fight at? Wait, not a fight, he punched out the bouncer (employee) of the establishment.
You don’t deserve to be captain and you know it.
EARN IT.

An unnecessary, unfair shot at Katz? Not really, you see, some time back (during the very poorly handled correct decision to replace Katz) my suggestion that him not being named captain MAY have been a reflection on his leadership was met by some with the response that, “only seniors get to be captain”. Today’s post was merely to correct that notion.
Katz handled his demotion with a lot of class, Riley did not. Both have skills and shortcomings as do we all.
The inconsistent performances of late are likely due to much more than team captains and those players who should be leaders (QB, etc). The buck stops with Riley. Will the pace and scope of his response to the situation bring positive results? We will know by the UCLA game. His seriousness, focus, passion, and willingness to change (or lack thereof) will be apparent by then.

rileysafraud says:

And while it MAY have been a reflection on his leadership, I was simply pointing out that it also MAY have been for a variety of other reasons like the talent pool being more full, or the overall leadership ability on the team being higher instead. The truth is that Mannion being elected captain really offers no insight into Katz’s leadership ability at all. So yes….it was unnecessary and unfair.

I don’t have a problem with these picks and have a hard time finding one.
Yes, Poyer made a mistake. One in four years, I’ll let that slide, after all what is he 22?
Manion is young and he threw a lot of interceptions, but didn’t a guy named Brett Farve do that too? (Bret was almost 100 but you get my point)
Looking at our roster and complaining about these two being picked as captains simply does not add up. There are no better options than Manion and Poyer on this team.

The problem I see with these interviews is the “lead by example” rhetoric. Leading by example is important, but this team needs some vocal leadership as well, and neither of these guys make strong, clear statements about being comfortable with the vocal role.
This stems from Riley, who sets the example that this team follows; set vague goals upon which you cannot be judged (“just try to get better every day”), be not vocal, “find your identity during the season,” etc.
This program is getting so predictable and uninteresting; and that’s not to fault the players. Its the lack of vision and communication from the AD and the football coaching staff, and the complacency and apathy of Riley/Banker/Langsdorf. The whole “at-least-its-not-a-28-year-losing-streak” attitude should be unacceptable.
When was the last beaver football victory that was not just a victory that appeased diehard fans, but was sound in all three phases of the game, and entertaining to watch (i.e. a FOOTBALL fan would appreciate it)? I’m thinking maybe the victory over USC in Quizz’s last year? This is a serious question, if someone could point to a better and/or more recent example I’d be happy to see it.

Mannion is a Talented but young QB with a lot of room to improve. As far as being a Freshman All American, he was only competing with 2 other guys. Not a big deal. Running ability does not make a good option QB. Making the correct decision during that option is most important. Running can be a plus though.
Beavs Believe says:
Jun 13, 2012
It might not be a big deal, but interceptions aside, all of his stats were more then just good, for any year. Much less a freshman. With a year under his belt, and most importantly (and hopefully) some improvement from the O-line I think we will see that interception stat go down.
This kid has the makings of a VERY good quarterback. Last year he tried to do too much with not enough time. This year, hopefully, he gets a chance to relax in the pocket and show us all the great throws he can clearly make.

I agree. And I think the Beavers will be much improved overall.
Beaver4life6 says:

When you look at the number of picks Mannion threw you must take into consideration the fact that he was forced to throw the ball more frequently due to a terrible run game. Last years O line was terrible when it came to rum blocking and was average at best in protecting the Quarterback. The offense ran threw the young arm of Mr Mannion which would account for an increased number of int’s. He will be much improved in his second season at the helm of the OSU offense and should have an improved O line with help coming in the fall.
It is still early in the evaluation process but I believe when his career is done Mannion may be the best QB that OSU has had since Terry Baker. As for Poyer someone previously posted that he had “hit a bouncer” that is not correct. Jordan has previously kicked out of the club for being underage, he later returned after turning 21 and was asked to leave. In my opinion the club overreacted and had him arrested for trespassing.
This is a very important year for the Beaver program and the success will come only if young men like Stan Hasiak, Isaac Seumalo, Garrett Weinreich, Grant Bays, and Gavin Andrews can step in and make an impact on this O line unit. Right now the Beav’s need some kid’s who are gonna come out and put an opponent on their backside! we need guys that will get in the trenches and fight.
I believe one of the reasons the Beavers always start slow is due to the fact that they have a soft fall camp. They come into the season and have not been battle tested by a intense camp that pushes them to the limit. Thus it takes them two or three games to get into game shape. Something has to change, whether it’s Riley moving into the AD role and bringing in some young blood I don’t know. All’s I know is if this team wins four games 2012 you are going to see attendance drop and a very angry Beaver Nation.
