Thomas McCarthy was discovered by Kentucky playing for the Knights.

The NCAA Division I baseball playoffs get underway this weekend, and the Oregon State baseball team starts off in the Baton Rouge Regional.

One standout local player won’t be with the Beavers. Thomas McCarthy, a Crescent Valley High grad, plays 3B for Kentucky and the Wildcats begin their quest for Omaha at the Purdue Regional.

McCarthy grew up playing in the shadow of Goss Stadium, but wasn’t pursued by the Beavers much. He’s a late bloomer.

Read about his journey through college in Thursday’s GT. He concludes a very successful four years with three different teams this season.

And he even had a summer with the Corvallis Knights, which start up for the summer Friday. Tuesday is the home opener.
