It’s surprising to me that they don’t pay us to attend these PR events!
Craig Robinson seems like a nice guy and all but he’s really not a very good coach. He’s had 4 years and has a miserable conference record (27-45) and the only reason we won 20 games last season is because we played a pathetic non-conference slate and played 36 games! Even if you only win HALF the games we get 18 wins so winning 20 is no big deal. The man can’t recruit and seriously, if he didn’t have a sister married to the President, he would be just another mediocre losing coach who should be out of a job. He’s over his head.
Riley is a charming and likable guy and that plays well with OSU people so if you ignore his losing conference tally (46-47) you might be okay with him. However, he seems to be stuck in his ways and blinded by loyalty and the game has passed him by. He can recover if he wanted to but the lifetime contract he has (thanks BDC) really doesn’t reward excellence. Rather it rewards mediocrity. So while other teams change and move their programs forward (WSU, UCLA, UA, ASU, UW) Riley will stand pat. If you look at NikeU, their assistant coaches have been there forever but they grow and adapt to their personnel and opponents with new schemes. But gosh darn it, we still like the guy!
I would pay to hear Riley say he’s doings things differently but you know what they say about doing the same things repeatedly while expecting a different result…

Loyalty???? Curious why you use that word to describe Riley. He chucked an entire senior class under the bus (and several juniors too) to blame a terrible season on youth and rebuilding. I don’t call that loyalty when you consider it’s the young men who choose to play for Oregon State that Riley owes the most loyalty too. If I were advising young recruits who wanted to play for a loyal coach in the Pac 12 Riley would be pretty far down my list.

take a look at that senior class of last season, was there anyone in that senior class that you thought should be starting? Last seasons team “rebuilding year” was due to bad recruiting for 2 years and the young guys came in and out performed them. This is Pac 12 football, the best players who give the team the best chance at winning will play.

I was referring to the misplaced loyalty in his OC/DCs that he displays. His blindness to those “good ‘ol boys” is what holds us back. Even Sarkisian jettisoned his pal Holt the Dolt for one reason and one reason only…he wanted to IMPROVE. Maybe what really holds Riley back is plain old FEAR because his way will produce a mediocre winning team that will go to some minor toilet bowl and extend his contract another year. Making bold changes could result in spectacular success or utter failure and he can’t handle the thought of either one.

I think Riley has shown the capacity to change. He fired Newhouse because he wasn’t pulling his weight in recruiting. He has hired young coaches who have recruited well in their first year (Barsfield/Brennan), hired an experienced coach, and brought in a GA who really make a difference in our LB play. The biggest change is taking over the play calling. These last two years our play calling has been terrible. I like Langsdorf and think he is a good coach/recruiter, but he has shown the capacity to adapt his play calling before and during the game.
I don’t ever remember reading anything that has Riley throwing the Sr/Jr players under the bus. Last year was a rebuilding season, we didn’t have a strong Sr class, and their wasn’t any Sr leadership on the team.

JAMES ROGERS, CAM COLLINS, LANCE MITCHELL, JAMES HARDIN, RYAN KATZ (jr), etc…jeez, maybe it’s not Riley’s fault at all but the fan base that is not loyal. I rescind everything I ever said about Riley and wish OSU’s fan base exactly what you deserve

But how did he throw them under the bus?

Sean Mannion

Before you all start defending Mannion please remember, there will be actual, tangible proof this year so fire away with a little restraint. My guess is that none of you would give higher than 50/50 odds Mannion outperforms Katz at SDSU
Bone says:

Yeah I wasnt going to use Mannion as an example. I think it was the rigt move but some think not. But I don’t think quarterback was the reason the team struggled. The youth movement before Mannion even took a snap. Would you have rather player the seniors even though they weren’t as talented?

There will be no “proof” as you say…Just like there is no proof of the secret meeting between Riley and Mannion’s father.Maybe your time would be better spent supporting Katz at his new team…. The fact is Mannion has the job and Katz is in San Diego…deal with it!

Sound a little defensive is all I’m saying.
rileysafraud says:
May 16, 2012
And if your point is that there will be no “proof” because Mannion plays on a worse team, then I believe I should point out the team Katz is on is barely in a conference. If you really believe the excuse for Mannion not putting up the numbers Katz does this year is because he is on a worse team then perhaps you should take another look at my handle.
bone says:
May 16, 2012
I think you should ask Matt Moore about Riley’s loyalty you might also ask Alexis Serna, Brandon Hughes, Keanon Lewis.
Also if you want to look at spring game numbers this year, I’ll take Mannion’s. But those are just spring, I’ll wait for fall.
Tagup says:

Let me get this straight..you want to compare Katz’s numbers this year at San Diego State with Mannion’s at OSU? Really?…You don’t see a flaw in that logic?…..I’m pretty sure the Defense Mannion will see in the Pac-12 is a little better than what Katz will see…….not to mention a dozen other variables.

This isn’t a PR campaign. Sorry to say this but the school down the road knows PR. They started their’s 12 years ago and has payed off big time. I don’t think Riley could bring in a guy like Chip Kelly to OSU.Not that I’m a big fan of his, If Riley brought in a coach like that, Riley would blame him for not winning not credit him for winning.
Tagup says:

Right..a PR campaign and illegal recruiting tactics…which one helped more I wonder?
bone says:

I would like to find an interview where Riley gives the credit to himself, the ones that I have seen he gives it all to the player.

Tagup,
All of that nonesense sounds like making excuses to suck…which are the only two things Oregon State did well last year. Might want to think about that as this will be the 3rd year in a row SDSU goes to a bowl game and OSU is home
Tagup says:
May 16, 2012
The only thing that sucks is your logic…..drawing a conclusion between 2 QB’s on different teams, in different conferences, using different systems, and different team strengths and weaknesses makes no sense. I will say, however, that barring injury Mannon will be a much better QB at OSU than Katz (statistically speaking of course). Your argument doesn’t hold water so you may as well go back to the conspiracy theory that Mannion Sr. blackmailed Riley……Tin foil hat anyone?

I’ll take a tin foil hat, if it chases the “sky is falling” whiners off this blog…
