The secondary stood out again for the Oregon State football team Monday for the eighth day of spring practice.
S Ryan Murphy, S Tyrequek Zimmerman and S Peter Ashton were praised for their work by coach Mike Riley. Murphy just has a knack for the ball.
“They have a lot of football savvy and athleticism,” Riley said. “There was some good play-making going on. This was a good football day with a lot of give and take on both sides of the ball.”
The QBs threw a few picks in the scrimmage portion of practice. Some where tipped balls and others were good plays. However, WRs Kevin Cummings and Obum Gwacham looked good receiving.
“Sometimes today in the first day of third down we didn’t make a lot of good decisions, but they are completing a lot of balls,” Riley said of the QBs.
Since the Beavers worked on third down today, nickel packages were installed. CBs such as Sean Martin were looked at as the nickel back.
TE Colby Prince (hamstring) remains out, while RB Storm Woods (concussion) and WR Micah Hatfield (concussion) returned to practice.
On a side note, OL coach Mike Cavanaugh walked by me when the OL and DL went to lift and asked if I had any eligibility left since he’s down bodies.
If I did have any left, I would have to eat a lot to get up to the right size. However, I’m not sure I made enough progress for enough degrees since I’m so far removed from college.
And here’s a link to my story in Monday’s GT on newcomer OLB Cade Cowdin and how he found his way to Corvallis.

Did ya ask Cav if he’d thought about calling for volunteers from the student body at large?
Riley’s earlier admission that the lack of bodies hampers even the evaluation of RB’s is just another disheartening aspect of the thin OL. At any rate, the eight remaining have no excuse for not having solid fundamentals. DeVan also has to be a coaching plus…….hmm, maybe he could take a few reps in practice.

The idea of DeVan taking a few reps in practice and scrimmage might not be a bad one. Well, as long as he’s in shape, of course. When else would a college DT/DE get to square off with an experienced former NFL lineman. One that has a Superbowl ring and has snapped to Payton Manning, nonetheless.

Have mixed feelings about the picks in practice. Is it because the quarterbacks are making bad decisions or because the DB’s see these same plays all the time in practice? Probably a bit of both.

Even if the DBs see the repetition, the QBs need to know where NOT to throw the ball. Hopefully they are all learning DOs and DON’Ts.

Sounds like it’s the safeties making the most/frequent picks; hopefully the CB’s are providing tight coverage and safeties are cleaning up and/or getting the picks on the second or third checkdown options?

Is this 2012 football season going to be “The Year” for OSU football to play in a BCS Bowl again? Or are we constantly going to keep saying “wait til next year” year after year? So will OSU EVER play ina a BCS Bowl game again? Why? Why not?

OSU4Life – My opinion is we’ll see marked improvement from the last two years, but won’t go to a BCS. The stars are aligned for maybe 2013 and definitely 2014. Think how many of our better players were Freshmen last year? Think how talented this year’s recruiting class was. I’d say we also have many talented Soph & Jr’s who didn’t make a splash in 2011 but will this year (Doctor, DJ Welch, Reynolds, Gwachum to name a few).
What it looks like to me is that this 2012 team will be good enough to win 8+ games. If they win 5, it’ll be much different than the 2010 team that won 5 but didn’t show a huge upside. It would still be a team that is on the rise.2013/14 both have favorable schedules. 2013 will have a lot of young talent hitting their Jr year and a few stud SR’s still on the roster. 2014 will replace those SR’s from 2013 with guys like Skotte, Michell, Seumalo and Chris Brown.
It’s not quite as simple as “next year is our year”…right now we’ve built a foundation and 2013-2018 could all be strong years if we keep the pipeline full with more classes like the 2011/12 recruiting classes.\

Ariz, nice optimism but you have spent too much time in the sun if you can imagine 8 wins from this team this year. We will be lucky to put together a 6 win season, there are just too many holes in the roster still, primarily in the trenches where games are won. 2013/2014 could potentially see 8 wins if the coaches find a way to patch the massive gash in the middle of our D-line.
Good things are happening with the O-line, but regardless how touted this class is they will need a year to mature and gel. That’s just how things go with college big men.
I think this team has the potential to find their way into a good bowl game in 2014, not the BCS. USC, Stanford and Oregon are just bringing in too many good players for OSU to compete for a PAC 12 title right now. Oregon, Stanford, Utah and Washington are out coaching OSU right also(there are interesting new hires this year that will probably join this list also). We have a lot of building to do and it will probably be several years until we see a BCS bowl again, My guess is it wont happen until after 2019.
If we make some moves with the PAC 12 tv money, who knows…

“8+wins this year”
HAHHHAHAHHAAHHA
IF WE GET 6 THAT WILL BE A MIRACLE.
NO bowl game this year dude.
Next year we go to a tidy bowl.
Get used to it.

Actually 6 would not be a miracle. That is exactly my prediction for this season, 6 wins. That said, I could certainly be wrong but people need to stop acting like they know what is going to happen. In any sport, experience trumps all else and we have a good amount of experience coming back. We are thin on the O-line but come Fall we only need 5 healthy guys to be ready to play. Spring practice is a chance for extra preparation but our team will not be complete until fall practice when all the guys show up. Fans are always clinging to what they think will happen and not anticipating the fact that every year is a clean slate. And our record next year is 0-0 and will remain that way until we strap on the pads. Take that pessimistic attitude elsewhere.

The interception deal to me is a lose-lose situation. If the quarterbacks are shredding the defense then its because the dbs are poor.
