There’s a good mix of young and veteran talent at linebacker for the Oregon State football team, so there are several goals in spring practice.
Returning senior starting MLB Kevin Unga must get back up to speed after missing a lot of time due to a knee/upper calf injury.
Rueben Robinson moved back to MLB full-time as the backup so one of the seniors should make it through the season. Josh Williams, Jashuwa James, Kyle Gardner and Charlie Gilmur are in development behind him.
Weak side OLB will be manned by returning starting junior Michael Doctor. He should be set for a big season. Behind him are JC transfer Cade Cowdin, Shaydon Akuna and Zeke Sanders. Sanders moved from S to OLB.
Strong side OLB starter is projected to be DJ Welch with Jabral Johnson, Te’o Shiloah, Will Storey and Kyle Eagan behind him. Storey moved from S to OLB. He should have started there, so we’ll see.
This position is curious in that I though Cowdin and Welch would compete for it since there’s no returning starter there. Of course that could happen in the fall but for now it’s Welch’s job to lose.
