Oregon State football coach Mike Riley spoke with the beat writers Tuesday afternoon to catch us up with what’s going on with the program going into spring practice, which starts April 3.
Here are the bullet points. My full story will be in Wednesday’s GT here.
Players out with injury: OG Grant Enger (shoulder), S Anthony Watkins (shoulder), CB Brian Watkins (shoulder). Enger and A. Watkins are starters.
Doubtful: DT Castro Masaniai (leg), another starter. He’s still hurt from previous injuries.
Limited work: DE Blake Harrah (knee), CB Larry Scott (knee)
Start slow but should be there at the end: OT Colin Kelly (ankle), WR Jordan Bishop (ankle), RB Jovan Stevenson (foot). Kelly and Bishop were starters, and Stevenson a significant contributor.
CBs Mishawn Cummings (undisclosed), Malcolm Marable (speeding) and Sean Martin (DUII) are still suspended but are working to have their suspensions lifted by spring practice.
OT Darryl Jackson (hip) and LB Tony Wilson (multiple stingers) are applying for medical hardships. That means they are not medically cleared to play but will be able to finish school on scholarship.
Position changes: Noa Aluesi moved from TE to DT; Obum Gwacham from SE to slot; Zeke Sanders from S to OLB. Aluesi is not going on his Mormon mission now.
There are only eight healthy OL, so their work will be limited. They are: LT Justin Addie, LG Josh Andrews, C Roman Sapolu, C Jake Welch, RG Michael Beaton, RG David Vieru, RT Michael Philipp, RT Derek Nielsen.

So Daryl Jackson is never going to play due to his hip? Whats the deal?

He’s not medically cleared. Doctors say it’s not a good move to play.

Hopefully Castro can make an impact this season. Darryl Jackson is out the whole season?

Out his whole career.

I’ve seen Noa Aluesi listed at everything from 6’4 225 to 6’8 275. Can you clear that up Cliff? How big is this guy?

I don’t have the update heights and weights, yet.

That’s a bummer, Darryl was a very nice prospect.

OSU website says 6’6″ 270lb for Aluesi.

Riley needs to get to 8 wins next year and the Holiday Bowl or better…
Oregon State has a big moment for the program on Wednesday night against Wazzu. Fans expect to win and the program needs the momentum of being on the verge of a 2nd CBI Title to help propel OSU Basketball into a force next year. Matching up against Butler or Pitt is going to be fun so OSU needs to get it done.

Riley could not get to the Holiday bowl with intact lines. He already admitted that the oline chemistry will not be there this fall because it’s thin and new guys will be coming in. Look for another slow start this season.

8 healthy OL is really bad. typically for snake bit riley/osu that will mean 4 guys will go down during spring ball. ick.

What happened to Geoff Garner? He played in several games last year as a sophmore but isnt listed on the depth chart.

Transferred a while back due to not going to get playing time.

Very hard to believe anyone with playing time last year wouldn’t be in a great position to play this year, given the shortage of OL’s. I guess he either wanted some sort of guarantee of being #1 at his positon or that there are other factors at play here.
Seems if the coaches wanted him it would not be a hard sell to convince him that he had a great chance to play.

DT is not a priority in recruiting, yet we are plugging in a 6’6 275 guy in at DT. Here comes another year of worst rushing D in the nation.

My gracious the injury report is shocking with so many kids still hurt after four months of time to recuperate. It suggests three immediate things to me. One, the kids we have recruited overall physically are subpar to many of the teams we play and just get the crap beat out of them. Two, our trainers have done a terrible job in getting these kids physically fit. Three, Riley’s practice routines are soft and don’t get the kids in shape to play (just look 40 miloes to the south to see what I mean).

I hate to be a “Debbie Downer” but this is potentially alarming news. Forget about not having a Spring Game of any substance but a thin OL going into Spring Training?!? The OL was flat out abysmal last year and all hopes rest on the incoming Fresh class, which is a longshot that any will start as TFS. Doubly depressing is the weak depth on the DL. Masiani is the only DT of any suitable girth! Particularly disturbing in all this is that Riley went on record as saying “DL depth was not a priority in recruiting”. WTH??? What is this guy seeing that I am not. Semualo goes down and we’re pinning out hopes on 275lb backups?

Wow, Beavers still suffering from the injury plague, big time. Losing Darryl Jackson is huge – I had high hopes of him having a large and immediate impact, and anchoring the OL for the next few years. The lack of healthy bodies on the OL is scary. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out by the start of the season.

Yes, OL looks thin, but CB looks scary too!
