The No. 8-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team wrapped up the home slate Friday night against New Hampshire and Seattle Pacific.
OSU won with a 196.725 to New Hampshire’s 193.050 and Seattle Pacific’s 191.000.
The usual lineup was being used. Makayla Stambaugh gave it a go in the all-around.
It was senior night for Leslie Mak and Olivia Vivian. Read about them in my previous blogs for Mak here and Vivian here.
“I have to remember this moment because I’ve never going to have it back,” Mak said. “Olivia and I shared a moment after floor. I wanted to cry. It’s a bittersweet moment. I’m so happy with our careers.”
If you missed my story on Brittany Harris in Friday’s GT, check it out there. And here’s my story on the art of the vault from earlier in the week.

The team started out bad, but ended up with a good score of 49.100. That’s the best score since the last home meet. Check out Chelsea Tang below.

Here are some random thoughts: The beavs look very tired and lackluster right now, which is going to be a huge problem going into the post-season. The main concern in general is that they have no depth, so their best gymnasts are forced to compete all season long–compare this to UCLA, which can rotate gymasts to keep them from injuring themselves and getting too fatigued. Until the beavs have more depth, they will not be able to break into the top 6–and the way they look now, the top 10 is questionable too. It’s just hard for the beavs to compete with teams like UCLA, Alabama and Florida, which are packed with elite gymnasts. JO/L10 gymnasts are great, but boy would it make a difference to have a couple US national team members. I just don’t think we’ll ever be able to recruit them to OSU, sad to say. I hope the beavs do well at the PAC 12s, but if they finish above third place, I will be truly shocked.

The coaches knew that going in. Read my story in Saturday’s GT, addressing the philosophical approach to this season and how it changed.

The coaches didn’t have any other options except to be aggressive–if you don’t use your best gymnasts your RQS will suffer due to low scores. But no depth + long season = poor post-season performances. Just saying…BTW watched the Pacific Rim competition, and no fewer than 4 of the gymnasts are going to UCLA/Stanford. How many to OSU?? None….
