If you didn’t see the update on the blog post about the Oregon State football team’s probable new DB coach here, the word from the Beavers is that an announcement should/could come at the end of the week.
Official hiring is always slow due to HR paperwork. I’ll have more on Rod Perry as it comes available soon.
A while back I was told that the practice fields were going to have turf installed with light poles around the field and the Reser Stadium turf was going to be redone this offseason.
That’s still going to happen, but not until the spring. Plans are still being finalized. They’ll probably start with the practice fields. It shouldn’t interfere with spring practice because there’s the indoor center and stadium.
RB coach Chris Brasfield and OL coach Mike Cavanaugh were honored for their recruiting prowess this week.
Brasfield was chosen as one of the top-50 recruiters in the nation by 247sports.com. Cavanaugh was named one of the top-10 recruiters in the Pac-12 by Rivals.com.
And if you missed it, former San Diego Chargers and Washington State QB Ryan Leaf called OSU coach Mike Riley an idiot, and then I saw on Twitter someone got him to apologize.
I was in San Diego when Riley coached the Chargers and Leaf was there. Leaf is the epitome of the pot calling the kettle black with that statement. Leaf was media comedy gold for years.
The 6.81 seconds in the 60 meters at Washington last month by WR Brandin Cooks is the 13th best time in the country. Not bad for a part-time track participant.
And check out this video from the recruiting dinner from last week.

I can’t believe all the Riley haters haven’t jumped all over the Rod Perry thing. Are they waiting until the HR paperwork is done? Come on you guys, tell us all why this is a terrible hire and how we should have done whatever it takes to keep Keith Heyward…..

The thing is… Riley Haters would have been Heyward Haters prior to his departure. When discussing the Beaver Secondary, all they do is lament the fact that our DBs “never turn & look for the ball”.
Ummm… who’s the coach that would be most directly responsible for that?
Anyone, anyone?
That’d be the DB coach, Mr. Bueller?
Please don’t take that as a knock on Keith Heyward-Johnson. I met the man and liked him a lot. I think he’ll be a head coach on some level before he’s done. My reasoning is that Riley Haters will look on Heyward’s departure as a reason to hate Riley. And, had he been retained, Riley Haters would have looked on that as an opportunity to hate Riley.

That’s a technique taught by the DC coach Mark Banker to his assistant.

And it’s a technique employed by Mr. Heyward-Johnson pretty successfully as a player, too.
Look, friends, I’d love to see the DBs turn towards the ball at the magic moment & make INTs. I do it all the time with the XBox. But in reality, that type of defense approach is very, very risky!
Picture yourself as a WR… look up like you’re looking for the ball, then hitch & go deep. The DB looks for the ball, which isn’t there, and then the receiver is ten yards behind him. Blown coverage & touchdown. Not what we want to see, right?
Again, I’d love to see the DBs look back at the magic time, but I acknowledge that that type of coverage increases the risk of big scoring plays.

JUNEA – I was holding out hope that Mark Banker had a brother that Riley wanted to bring into his coaching ranks. Ya know, keep things in the family…

Is it just me or does Banker sound like he has hit the “tackling dummy” one too many times? No wonder the guy has only 1 defensive scheme and refuses to adjust according to his opponent or the talent on D. The very thought of having to make even the slightest defensive adjustment must cause Banker to wake up at night in a cold sweat.

A football player or coach that didn’t sound like a scholar?
PERISH THE THOUGHT!!!

Wow, RenoNVbeavr, “the guy has only 1 defensive scheme and refuses to adjust according to his opponent or the talent on D”. NICELY WRITTEN!

Seeing Bill Swancutt on this video made me long for the days when the Beavs had one of the most feared pass rushers in the conf. Hopefully Crighton can be that next Swanny because nobody since has been able to carry that dude’s jock.

Hmmm, Rod Perry. Quite a resume. Best I can tell is that he has been fired from the last four jobs he had, Oilers (95-96), Chargers (97-01), Panthers (02-06) and lastly the Colts (07-12). He is currently unemployed. Can’t wait for the spin to start around his hiring. Maybe a change of scenery to the college scene is the ticket.

Actually, he has accepted pay raises at every program he coached for. He was one of the highest paid assistant coaches in the league, even making more than some DC’s. I’ve heard from someone very close to the program that he is accepting a bonus on top of his 200k just to move to Oregon. If anything, call it a loss for him and gain for us.
