Sources told Footballscoop.com, a website that tracks coaching moves, that former Indianapolis Colts assistant coach Rod Perry is who Oregon State coach Mike Riley is about to name as his new DB coach.
Perry played for Colorado and was a fourth-round pick by the L.A. Rams. He played for them from 1975-82, and the Cleveland Browns from 1983-84.
He coached with the Seattle Seahawks (1989-1991), L.A. Rams (1992-1994), Houston Oilers (1995-1996), the San Diego Chargers (1997-2001) with Riley, Carolina Panthers (2002-06) and Colts (2008-2011).
UPDATE: The word out of Oregon State is that there will be no official DB coach news until late in the week. Of course that could change.

So Cliff,
He has a lot of experience in the NFL, but it doesn’t look like any NCAA experience. So, other that working with Riley at San Diego what does he have to offer?

I will address this more in a future blog, but he’s an experienced NFL coach who can teach an NFL style defense.

This is like watching paint dry. I sure hope the new hire is worth the wait. Beavs nees a good coach. Riley knows what he’s doing. Go Beavs!!!!

Seems like another Riley buddy who won’t know how to recruit or stop a spread attack. An aging pro style coach who is willing (desperate?) to come to Corvallis after a lifetime in the pros to replace a guy who made like $100K seems wacky. Not the bold, fresh move I would hope Riley would make…
Riley is hiring another nice guy I’m sure, but it seems to be exactly what we don’t need. SOS different day.

Hi, I’m Rod Perry. I played in the NFL for 9 years. I coached in the NFL for 22 years. I know what it takes to be an NFL player. If you come to OSU, I will teach you everything I know and help you be the best player you can be.
But if you’d rather go to Washington and be coached by Keith Heyward, that’s cool too. He has experience as a car salesman, and has also played in the CFL, The World League of American Football, and in Arena football. He also has 6 years of coaching experience with two of those as a graduate assistant.
I’ll leave the decision up to you.

Hi Rod, glad to meet you! I’m looking forward to meeting you and learning more about being an NFL player.
By the way, do you know how to teach us to stop the option? Or do you know how to stop the spread? I hear that WSU, Arizona, UO, UW and others are running elements of the spread down here in the college ranks. It’s a bit different than the NFL. Even the guru of NFL defenses, Monte Kiffin couldn’t adjust, and his teams gave up 500+ yds to teams like Hawaii, Arizona, UW, UO and others even though they had tons of blue chip athletes. But you think your schemes will work down here? I hope so, because we really need success at this level first before we go to the NFL…as you can see, our lack of success has not translated well to getting our players invited to such things as the NFL combine where we can show our stuff.
But maybe you can change all that, right? I hope so because what we’ve been doing here the last few years hasn’t been real fun. Welcome to Corvallis!

I can tell by your excellent question, that you will be a good fit here at Oregon State. We need smart guys, but we also need athletes that are fast and strong. You have all three of these qualities.
As you know, NFL teams don’t run the spread because they can’t afford to expose their quarterback to unnecessary hits. Also, in the NFL, there is speed at every position – both offense and defense. In college oftentimes the fastest players are on the offensive side of the ball. Not so in the NFL.
That’s why I am recruiting you. You are smart, fast, strong and can put a lick on any quarterback that’s going to make him think twice about running out of the pocket. Because that is where we are headed at Oregon State…we are going to get back to being the team that hits the hardest and runs the fastest. We are going back to recruiting guys like Nick Barnett, Dwan Edwards, Stephen Paea, Sabby Piscitelli and Keenan Lewis. All NFL players.
Oregon State could use a guy like you.
So what do you say? Do you want to be a Beaver?

Hi Juneau, Rod here…I’m anxious to start getting Beaver Nation excited again about the defense! I hear you have some pretty darn good athletes and a great recruiting class that I’m confident that I can mold into a great secondary. I have seen a lot of OSU alums in the “league” and I’m sure there are many more future pros to come…just give me a chance to teach them how to put a lickin’ on those skinny spread/option QBs!
Oh yeah, about that recruiting thing, do we use those fancy recruiting agents to help us get those 5* players out there? I’ve got a buddy who mentors a bunch of high school stars…

@OSUSupporter: please suggest who YOU would rather Riley hire? I am so tired of all the whining Beaver fans. If you are goig to complain, please suggest an alternative. One coach cannot change a defense to suddenly stop the spread. The players need to do it ( and more likely better players than we have)

uuuh…Perry will coach defensive backs…last time I checked Oregon State ran Mark Bankers defensive scheme…Perhaps you and Rod could suggest that HE find an answer to the spread offense…I’m pretty sure that it’s HIS job..
