The Beavers before the throwdown in Gill Coliseum.

The No. 16 Oregon State wrestling team lost to No. 13 Wyoming by the narrowest of margins. It was tied 22-22 and the fourth tiebreaker was used to determine the winner.

This is new this season. Last year the Beavers had two ties and that’s how it was left.

Read my story from the meet that will be in Sunday’s GT.

Let’s just say coach Jim Zalesky was not a happy camper afterward. My older son was with me outside the locker room as I waited for interviews with the wrestlers.

His response to Zalesky’s loud tone was, “he’s mean.” However, it wasn’t as wild as some baseball coach Pat Casey has been know let loose.

Basically, if three Beavers wrestled better — and they are capable of doing so — OSU would have won. It was just a matter of not losing so badly.

Lineup changes
There were major changes to the lineup, and most of them are going to be for the rest of the season. James Roberts (133 pounds) wrestled for Garrett Drucker due to a knee injury.

Drucker should be back soon. And if he wrestled, Zalesky felt he would have not been pinned like Roberts.

John Tuck (184) was pulled out and replaced by Ty Vinson, who moved up from 174. Cody Weishoff took Vinson’s place. He moved up from 165. Joe Latham was inserted at 165. However, all three lost.

“That’s our lineup going forward,” Zalesky said. “They should help our team for the rest of the year, but it’s hard to move up in one week against guys who have been wrestling there all year.”

Pat Rollins, black, reversed this situation for a pin Sunday.

Rollins impresses
Pat Rollins pinned the No. 14 wrestler in the country, Michael Martinez. It was a rematch from earlier in the season he lost 5-2.

“My weight was an issue earlier in the year but I got control of it,” Rollins said. “That helps a lot. Coach (Kevin) Roberts put it in me that I have to believe in myself and I deserve to be here and be in those matches.”

Meeks coming back
Taylor Meeks (197) is still coming back from an ankle injury that took him out for a month, but Zalesky wanted him to put up a better fight in his major decision loss.

“He didn’t look good and didn’t look as good as the beginning of the season,” Zalesky said. “We have to get back in shape with that. He was wrestling a tough guy, but he need t hold up.”
