The Seattle Times is reporting that Oregon State DB coach Keith Heyward has taken a similar job with Washington. I’ll find out more later.
Some folks in cyberspace say it’s not a done deal.
He’s the lowest paid Beavers assistant, and would be getting a pay raise.
Heyward has come on as a recruiter and works well with athletes.
Check out my full story on former OSU CB Brandon Hardin playing in the Shrine Game later this months. It contains my interview with him.
OSU sent out that former OSU players now in the NFL, Al Afalava and Keaton Kristick, returned to campus this winter to work on their degrees.
S Afalava (2005-08) played for the Bears and recently signed a futures contract with the Titans.
OLB Kristick (2006-09) signed with the 49ers after his senior season.

Not likely all of them, but one or two might. We’ll see.

dang. one of the coaches i like is leaving. just shows you that other programs can evaluate our coaching talent better than our own AD. (see banker not getting a job and heyward getting scooped up by another school in the conf).

Kind of feels like rats abandoning a sinking ship. I’m not in any way referring to our coaches being rats. After the last two seasons the sinking ship analogy is spot on.

I’m a Dawg fan so this seems like an exciting move for us. We lost Martin to UCLA, he was a good recruiter but apparently not that good of coach.
Was he a good coach and good recruiter?
P.s. Have always liked Riley and think he’s done a great job at your school. Would rather have taken a good coach from another school in the conference.
Good luck next year, except when you play the Huskies.

This is sad, but predictable; our program is fast approaching rock bottom (I hope) with the stubborness of Riley to keep Langsdorf. Why would any good coach want to stay here when our predictable and amateurish offense leaves little room to hope for improvement. I will not be buying tickets next year and a ton of people I have been talking too indicate they will not either. Many of these people are long-time season ticket holders. Good luck to Keith, he seemed like a solid coach and good image for our youinger players.

When a coach leaves a school for a similar position at another school (i.e. a lateral move) it means one of three things…1) it’s strictly a pay thing or 2) it’s a prestige thing (more high profile school) or 3) the coach can’t stand working at the school he’s at because of the HC, OC or DC.
In Heywards case, I think it’s both 1 & 2, not 3. Therefore, it would seem that although I hate the thought of losing him, he’s doing it for the right reasons. I would be much more critical if he had left for a similar position at say WSU, any WAC or MW school or the like.
Too bad it’s the wrong coach leaving.

Cliff – I’d really like to know which recruits specifically Heyward was instrumental in persuading to come to OS, even pre-2011. I do recall from past recruiting articles that Heyward was an aggressive recruiter and worked hard at the position. Was he to praise for improvement in the Beavs secondary this past season, getting guys like Poyer to exceed? Dont blame the guy for wanting to go to UW, however. Justin Wilcox, newly acquired DC, established defensive schemes that actually were highly effective against the Duck offense when he was DC at BSU. I am sure Heyward grew tired of watching the Beavers D give up 600+ pts to their arch rival and elected to paly for a DC who actually could adjust his scheme to fit his personnel.
