Oregon State defensive coordinator Mark Banker is interviewing for the head coaching job at Hawaii today, according to the Honolulu Advertiser.
Texas assistant head coach Duane Akina and Baylor associate head coach Brian Norwood are scheduled to meet with the six-member search/advisory committee. They were scheduled to arrive in town Saturday.
Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter will interview by Skype. Utah offensive coordinator Norm Chow has been invited to interview.
Banker was quoted in the article: “It’s like we never left. I really like people and culture here.”
Banker was an assistant coach at Hawaii in 1995 and has been the OSU recruiter for Hawaii, so he’s familiar with the area and people.
He also promised entertaining offense, saying “We’re in the entertainment biz.”

Looking at how he coaches defense I highly doubt there will be an “entertaining offense”

Tonight’s game vs. Portland St. should be up tempo and fun to watch. OSU has too many weapons for PSU to hang in there til the end in my opinion and I believe we win by just over 15 points. PSU will scrap but OSU will get good all around contributions and cruise late as they go to 9-2.
OSU 87, PSU 70

Banker said they will have an entertaining offese if he becomes Head Coach of Hawaii. I guess that means he is not taking Langdorf with him.

It would be nice to see Mr. Predictable and Mr. MORE-Predictable work their magic in another state. Notice that The Oregonian today (Sunday paper or on Internet) touted how Banker’s counterpart, Aliotti, alters his defense to fit his players and to best attack an opponent’s offense. An earlier article touted how Kelley adapts his offense to the talents of his players. Yet we keep hearing “stay the course” when results scream for adjustments at OSU.
Golly gee … maybe there is a reason why they were 11-2 this season while we were 3-9. ALOHA!

A reminder- a couple years ago the uck fans wanted to run Alioti out of town. I think Banker (and Langsdorf) should go, but a little perspective is in order. The grass ( pun intended Cliffy ) is not always greener…..

Alliotti didn’t change “in a vacuum.” He and Bellotti were buddies, and he was a chronic underperformer. The rules changed when Kelly showed up. I’m guessing the talk went something like this: “Your defense will meet these metrics this year, or you’re gone.”
Point being, Banker might have the potential to be a decent coordinator. But he’s not going to get better without pressure and high expectations, which I don’t think Riley is imposing. People respond to incentives and expectations- self motivation only goes so far. That’s corroborated by innumerable studies. If Riley’s OK with a 6 or 7 win season, Banker’s going produce a defense that enables a 6 or 7 win season, period.

That about sums up the situation perfectly! Well said.

Mike,
That’s an excellent point. If the other commenters were better listeners, they’d actually see that. Nick didn’t “shape up” because of Chip’s insistence… he started getting better players and they established continuity.
If you look at the disruption that the Beavers have endured since 2007 on the defensive side… you’ll see a bad blend of youth, career-ending injuries, players leaving, and guys who quite simply didn’t pan out… not to mention a serious lack of depth at important positions. I had thought OSU was at a point where those key spots were in good shape… and then you lose a key defensive tackle prospect like Fred Thompson (NOTE: I feel like a total j@ck@$$ for mentioning the Xs & Os side of his death and how it affects the team “on the field”, but it WILL have a significant effect) and the Beavers will once again be thin at that position.
I’m sure in the next 12-24 months somebody will gripe about Riley/Bankers inability to get complimentary talent at the DT position to match Wynn & Crichton… and that will be downright disgraceful.

Lack of complimentary talent at DT is already a problem, and would have been even without the recent tragedy. One legitimate (if unproven!) DT is not enough for a team. You need to be at LEAST three deep to be comfortable. And now, we are zero deep.
It’s not disgraceful, it’s just how it is. We’ve really screwed up failing to recruit DTs. All we have left is to hope that Brandon Bennett ends up being a monster out of the gates, cause he’s all we’ve got….
