My story in Wednesday’s GT talks about how the Oregon State football team is fighting to everyone focused to finish the season strong.
There’s the do-it-for-the-seniors and pride. The coaches are taking special care for the young guys so they don’t get disillusioned.
Check out DE Scott Crichton in the video below. He’s becoming a media darling not because he’s flamboyant, but because he’s so honest with his feelings about the game.
The defensive leaders are very confident in trying to give it their best effort in the last two games.
“Everybody on the team knows we haven’t payed our best game, and we have another opportunity this week to put that together,” LB Cameron Collins said. “It’s not for a lack of effort or commitment. Guys worked their butts off. It’s not always going to come out the way you want or planned. You just have to keep working.”

What defense? I thought OSU’s best defense was kicking field goals?

Nice to see Chricton, Wynn, and Poyer bringing some passion to the game. They’ll all be leaders on next year’s defense.
To fully take advantage of Wynn, they should move him to MLB and use him in a variety of ways. Other schools that recruited him recruited him as MLB. He’d terrorize offenses and you’d have at least one really talented player at every level of the D – Chricton/Thompson/Fernando on the line, Wynn at MLB (with those fast OLB’s), Poyer in the secondary.

Careful there ObjCritic, you’re getting creative there! I like it! Moving players around would require adaptibility, being creative, and moving away from the status quo. OSU doesn’t do this. They must stay the course doing the same thing over and over agin, but they expect to see different results. Insanity by definition, but in no doubt whatsoever, the OSU football way. I never knew OSU played defense this season? My eyes must have failed me? The nick-name for OSU’s 2011 defense should be “Swiss Cheese”. The OSU defense has more holes than “Swiss Cheese” and they stink.

Stupid “Smart-phone” (yeah right!) I apologize for the Spelling errors in above post, even on my name! Ok, now there’s something else to laugh at.

This coming week is a winnable game. There…I said it! Washington’s dual-threat, talented QB (Price) is not expected to play this week. UW has reeled badly the past several weeks, albeit against the better teams in the conf. Nonetheless, this is the last winnable game the Beavs have on their schedule and, frankly, there is no excuse if the Beavs drop this one.
Cliff – After the season is it expected that De Carolis will meet with Riley and confirm whether any staff adjustments are necessary? Hate to beat a dead horse but certainly with 2 consecutive losing seasons there begs the question if a more serious overhaul in Riley’s staff is needed. WSU -a team OS commandingly defeated- appears on the doorstep of making a bowl game, for Pete’s sake! Changes appear absolultely necessary.

De Carolis always meets with Riley. As for telling him he needs to change his staff, I don’t know. I’ll ask him when he is willing to talk football after the season.

Cliff – I find it very strange that DeCarolis is refusing to speak during the season. Don’t recall him ever taking that stance before … if it’s because of the struggles of the football program, doesn’t his silence create more of an impression of things going poorly than whatever questions he might be forced to answer?

i want these kids to get a big win saturday. it would make me very happy for the senior and the underclassmen going forward. i really hope that happens. the only negative bi-product to that is riley honks will be beating their chest trying to say “i told you so” failing to realize one win after you are eliminated from bowl contention means nothing for the fans.

You are right, bbb. A win from a fired up squad will cause some Riley diehards to say “I told you so” , but it really will beg the question, “why can’t MR and his staff motivate players more than once or twice a season?”.
I still gotta say ….GO BEAVS !

You guys really think a team needs a quarterback to beat the beavers? Has it been that long since Utah or Cal?
The Huskies could snap the ball and set it on a tee for the RB and still put 40+ on this squad. Chris Polk is a monster and will probably have a career day on Saturday. I wouldn’t be surprised to see washington put down 400 yards on the ground.

Duely noted, WFO. Utah and Cal hardly had world beaters for QB’s but still managed to thoroughly outclass the Beavs. It seems any team with a semblance of a running game -specifically run on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down- is enough to more than produce against the Beavs anemic defense. With Montana expected to start in place of Price, if Banker were smart he would load the box and absolultely force Montana to beat him with the passing game. Again…IF Banker were smart.

Maybe Banker should call Kyle Whittingham and ask him what to do?
WFO says:

In fact,I’ll send $10 to whoever gets a “What would Kyle Whittingham do?” sign on TV at the game on saturday.
Maybe Beavs faithful should take up a collection and print off a few thousand of them and hold them up in the stands. Hard to ignore that.
WWKWD?
LOAD THE BOX!

There is another approach as shown in this link. Think outside of the box, stack the box, or stay in the 4 3 formation.
