The Oregon State football team had a 78-play scrimmage Tuesday afternoon in Reser Stadium. It was a mix of guys in and out, and with what team they played. Here’s the full story in Wednesday’s GT.
What’s obvious is true freshman Malcolm Agnew is either going to start or play a lot. He and fellow freshmen Terron Ward and Storm Woods received most of the carries.
Freshman WR Brandin Cooks is also going to play a big role. He ran the flanker fly sweep and caught a 59-yard pass from QB Cody Vaz.
The defense, however, stood out most. There were four fumbles, three recovered. One of them was a 40-yard TD return by MLB Kevin Unga.
Agnew fumbled once when he couldn’t get a handle on the handoff. The others were from Vaz. He lost a snap, couldn’t hand off to RB Jovan Stevenson and had his arm bumped by a defender.
S Anthony Watkins picked off QB Ryan Katz in the end zone. S Lance Mitchell picked off QB Sean Mannion in the end zone.
PK Trevor Romaine was better on field goals, going 3-f0r-3. Backup Max Johnson missed his one shot from inside the 30.
OLB Cameron Collins (abdominal) sat out, as did back OLB Rueben Robinson (back) and DT Dominic Glover (concussion).
True freshman Kellen Clute went down late in the scrimmage with a serious right knee injury and was helped off the field.
Check out coach Mike Riley‘s comments below. He starts off with Cooks, touches on Agnew and QB Sean Manionn and others.

Cliff, is McCants really slipping that much? He only got two carries? The talk early on was that he was holding down the #1 spot. Is his good play fading or is Agnew/Woods/Ward playing that much better? Also what are the chances of one of these three redshirting this year?

It’s in my story that will be in Wednesday’s GT, but yes, he’s slipping. Riley said you can read into that Agnew is going to play a lot for OSU.
Riley hasn’t been overly positive when talking about McCants, so he’s open to use the freshmen.
They won’t redshirt since they will be used on special teams if they don’t play as much on offense. Ward is being groomed as a punt returner.
Riley likes the idea of not redhirting players who are able to play as true freshmen. That way, if they do get hurt down the road, they can get the medical redshirt.
This is particularly useful for RBs, who take a ton of pounding.

cliff in your report you said mannion threw an interception but in the stat’s it show’s vaz as getting one. which is it?

It was Mannion. OSU’s stats have Vaz for some reason. I corrected them.

Is there anybody left to play TE?
Way I see it…
3 TEs injured (1 with a minor ankle injury, the other two with more serious injuries).
2 TEs suspended (1 both injured and suspended)…
Can I wrap Colby Prince in bubble wrap so we don’t actually lose him as well?

McCants has had 3 years of opportunities to get playing time. Even with Quizz we were needing a solid back-up. He isn’t fast, quick, or elusive. He has had fumble issues. It will be interesting to see what these freshmen do.

McCants is a big guy, but, like me, he’s a long-strider. If he gets out in the open he’ll do good things, but he’s got to get through holes first. I’ve heard he’s improved ball security, and as a receiver, but it’s always seemed to me that he takes a LONG time to hit the hole and then doesn’t burst powerfully through it.
Seems like a great guy and an ideal teammate. Want nothing but the best for him!

McCants is a big body with above average athleticism. Any chance he could be developed into a fullback or is it too late?

Make him a tight end. He’s a bit lean, but could be a good pass catcher with decent height at 6’2″, and 225+lbs.
I might worry about him getting beat early in the season on pass/run blocking, but he is one of the most expendible rb’s we currently have in our stable. He might not be a solid rb, but his is definately an athlete. It would be much more difficult for him to learn the h-back position in a short amount of time, but it would be good to get him in motion, getting into his blocks, running short crossing patterns. He’s sitting at about 5 on the depth chart at Rb now, and there is no reason we can’t use him in situations as a fullback, or big short yardage back.

Oregon State tight end=Spinal Tap drummer.
I’m glad the coaches are going with the new kids at rb. McCants is one heck of an athletic looking kid but he just isn’t
a D1 rb. I kind of like the idea of moving him to tight end.
Sounds like the defense is athletic, but the o line still has issues. Come on Beavers!!!
Appreciate all of your updates Cliff.

OL is looking pretty good. RBs moving forward, less sacks.

Cliff, was Klute the kid that had the great spring game? Hope the injury is not as bad as they think.
Any chance the us McCants as an H-back?

Those were the stats. They weren’t thrown to, maybe to keep them safe.
