OLB Jabral Johnson from Lawton, Okla., committed to the Oregon State football team, according to Rivals.com.
He originally committed to Arizona more than a year ago, but changed his mind. The 6-foot-2, 218-pound, three-star athlete also had an offer from Tulsa. Johnson is ranked the No. 22 player in Oklahoma.
The Beavers already have two players from that state in S Dax Dilbeck (Edmond) and OLB Michael Doctor (Tulsa). Current WR recruit Tyrequek Zimmerman is a teammate of Johnson’s at Lawton High. They are close friends and wanted to play on the same team.
This is the 19th known member of the 2011 recruiting class, including the two midyear JC transfers. This is the second LB signed with JC transfer Rusty Fernando the other.

Now, i really like this. this is a very good commitment. And i like the mini-pipline being built to Oklahoma. Maybe we should try and schedule some games against Tulsa…

Tulsa would be good if it included a home-and-home. Knowing the OSU athletic dept. they’ll schedule the Sooners in a one-game contract.

I am glad we are getting some guys from different places in the country. This is good.
Now if we can just get Cavanaugh engaged on recruting maybe Katz won’t get killed on every play in the pocket.
It really sounds like all of the other coaches are doing their job recruiting hard and finding players in different places while Cavanaugh sits on his hands standing for his ideals on his 4 year plan for offensive linemen, Meanwhile, the team flounders because no one can get anything going…..and Riley allows it to continue…..

Coaches don’t recruit just the position they coach, they recruit geographic areas. Thus Cav might be recruiting WR’s and LB’s depending on what he is uncovering in his territory. Recruiting is a group effort.

The recruiting is broken down by region. So coach Cav only gets some of the blame. It is on the entire staff and Riley is likely the closer on some of the big name guys. Cav probably deserves the blame for not targeting the right guys but as far as landing the actual recruits it is on the entire staff. But we don’t really know if our current struggles on the line are from targeting the wrong guys, not landing the right guys, attrition and/or bad luck.

That may be, but we’re not really getting many recruits on the OL and it appears from Cliff’s writing that the team just does not recruit JC transfers at all – because coach Cavanaugh wants them in his system for four full years.
I see Cliff’s comment below that he says that the guys just need to get healthy. Obviously that is important – but injuries do occur. Overall the past couple seasons I think we have dealt with an overall lack of depth on the offensive line.
Of course, few of us are experts. But I see a big problem here. It can be fixed with some JC transfers and more recruits…but we don’t seem to be doing this.
It’s my opinion, but I do believe that the team can do better and fill some holes.

We’ve had some recent JUCO linemen haven’t we?
If memory serves, they just haven’t panned out.
Here are recent JC O-Linemen:
Vil Nau 2008
Brent McNeil 2008
Jon Iaone 2007
Una Smiley 2007
Michael Cole 2007
Did any of those guys do anything? Did any play a down? I don’t think we’ve had any luck with JUCOs in the past so I don’t see why the staff would waste scholarships now.
The (sad) fact is: Our most consistent successes have been walk-ons.

The tragedy of this year’s offensive line is that we should have seen an influx of outstanding linemen recruited the year Jaquizz Rogers was a freshman. How could the OSU coaches not have secured commitments from OL candidates that year with a simple statement: “If you come to OSU, you will be blocking for a Heisman Trophy candidate.” Instead, that opportunity was lost and the Beavers are living the reality of that two year old recruiting failure.

Florida Beaver,
Congratulations on your hindsight.
It’s 20/10 today.

Folks,
First recruiting is regional. Mean each coach goes to his area first, then the position coach follows up, then the coordinator then Riley. Cav’s area is Arizona. So all those guys are his finds such as Keaton Kristick.
Then what positions are recruited are out of need and who they have in the pipeline. There are 15 returning O-linemen, including four starters. There are two know high school commitments.
All the Beavers need to do is get health (Philipp, Johnson and Linnenkohl) were less than 100 percent) and hit the weights.

Wasn’t there also a Mau Nomani sighting? He hasn’t played football in at least two years but he would add depth and he’s massive.

Cliff, can you tell us which coaches are responsible for which areas? This would be interesting. Who has secured the two recriuts from Oklahoma? That’s not a path well blazed in the path?
sdbeav says:

If you go to the OSU football website and look up the individual profiles of the coaches it states which area each is responsible for recruiting.

If the 15 returning O-Linemen play like they did this season we need an all new O-Line.

Yes. He’s walking on this winter/spring.

The S and C program should be looked at closely. We always have a lot of injuries and our O-line gets pushed around. Quizz has to dodge his own lineman as they are being pushed into the backfield. His unusual skill set has masked this. It was the same thing in 09, although they could at least pass block that year. Watch Wisconsin’s line. They kill and take no prisoners. Should be interesting watching them bowl over our 235 pound d ends. How do we manage to schedule teams just as they hit historic peaks for their programs?

one thing i dont understand is why OSU hasn’t gone for a recruit with more athleticism. its understandable they like to make players instead of finding them, but I know if our coaching staff can coach up 2 star recruits, they can really coach up 4 or 5 star recruits.
Cliff Kirkpatrick says:
Dec 20, 2010
It’s because 4- and 5-star guys have other college options. It’s not like “OSU didn’t recruit me, I guess I’ll just go to Florida, USC or Penn State.” Those guys don’t consider OSU, or do until something better comes along.
OSU is the kind a cute girl with a nice personality. When the knockout comes, OSU doesn’t have a chance.

You know what happens to THOSE cute girls?
They earn NCAA sanctions.
This is the reality for Oregon State… High expectations are nice, but there must be accompanying realism or else Beaver fans are setting themselves up for bitter disappointment. I read some comment last week about “OSU needs to consistently rank in the top half of the PAC-10/12 in recruiting”.
I’d suggest putting that in a letter to Santa Claus.
OSU will only find consistent success by finding the hidden gems.

That gets you in trouble in real like. In college football, that gets you in trouble with the NCAA.

BEAVERMIKE – Athleticism? You surely arent talking about the recent LB recruit, Jabral. Check out Rivals and you tell me if this kid lacks athleticism. Beavs got a major find here, an aggressive tackler who appears to also have sound technique. Remember this guy’s name because he is going to make an impact.
