QB Ryan Katz should come back strong next season. PHOTO/AP
Here’s an early look at the Oregon State football team’s projected depth chart headed into the spring practice in April. It could change with normal attrition of players leaving the program for whatever reason. Also, here’s a link to my Thursday story in the GT that’s a look ahead for the Beavers.

It’s good to start looking forward to next season and put this past season behind us. Your post about spring practice was theraputic, as I suspect it was meant to be.

I’m surprised there’s an offensive line depth chart…seems like all jobs would be wide open to competition.

I agree objcritic, i would think that no line man be given a job and all lineman positions are open. At this point they need to really earn it.

I am very excited to see Michael Doctor and Cam get out there and play full time. Those two will offer something that was lacking this year, speed. Doctor i think will be really good, like Doggett good.
Cliff, i dont see Mike Bibbee on your depth chart. I thought the staff thought very highly of this guy. Is he really that far back or was he just on oversight by you?
I also am excited to see Castro and Frahm work together. Castro looks like he can be really good.
Cliff, i also noticed that you left out Obum Gwacham
Cliff Kirkpatrick says:

This was supposed to be a two-deep. Bibbee is No. 4 behind Robinson, Wilson and Unga.
Same with Obum. He’s just down on the depths.

Is Shaydon Akuna in the same boat? Or does he crack the two-deep in the near future?
Cliff Kirkpatrick says:

Yes, but like all low on the depth chart, that could change after the spring.

Castro and Frahm should be fun to watch. Hope a year of experience has taught Frahm to let his play do the talkin’.

Any word on pushing the bye week back? I had read earlier that this was being looked at in the schedule. With one bye next season, having it in week three seems a little soon.
Also, how did BYU become such a late game? Wasn’t that supposed to be the first game of the season when they signed the contract? The first game isn’t affected by the new Pac 12 schedule, so I am confused what happened, unless of course the Beavers don’t want the quality opponent first.
Also, I note Wisconsin is 2nd game next year. They’ve been creaming people with 70+ points scored in many games this year. I hope we’re not in for a bad beating on national TV again.

Does anyone get as depressed and frustrated as I do when viewing the final league standings. I doubt in the history of the Pac-10 it has ever been easier to get to a decent bowl game. UW at 6-6 going to San Diego. Arizona at 4-5 in league, beaten by us at their house, going to San Antonio. Both better bowl games than we have ever been to except the Fiesta. I suppose you could make a case for the Sun over the Alamo, but comparing El Paso to the city of San Antonio is like comparing Danny’s play calling to Chip’s.
Cast your eyes on the bottom two teams in the league, Bruins and Cougs with three wins between them. Need I remind anyone that two of those wins were vs the Beavers. Win those games as we certainly should have and were in San Diego at 7-5. Last year we were 8-4 and ina toilet bowl in Vegas. Just goes to show how you can blow a golden opportunity when your coaches don’t have you ready to play each and every game(Stanford and the Cougs being two prime examples). Say what you want about UO, but whether it was New Mexico or USC, their focused coaching staff had them ready and prepared for every game.
I doubt it’s ever going to be this easy again to play in a decent bowl game with such an average win/loss record. The Huskies(another team we should have beaten) going to the Holiday Bowl with a 6-6 record while we stay at home. I am humbled, saddened and somewhat humiliated.

Even with the tough out of conference schedule this season ended up being a huge missed opportunity for the Beavs. Kind of odd that they were unable to rise up to the challenge.

I agree about the season being a huge missed opportunity. I honestly think that had we beaten two of the three (UW, WSU and UCLA) we would would have had a really great shot at the Alamo. Consider that the team in the Alamo was beaten by us…

Someone on here once remarked that they were afraid the Beavers had reached the peak of their success . I am almost worried that he may be right as long as the current coaching staff remains and recruiting stays the same. Whatever the issues really are and who ever is responsible for them , until both are fixed with commitment to excellence , and not just getting by , I am afraid our golden years are gone.
In lighter news found on the pages of MSN , A 69 year old Duck fan has put off open heart surgery to repair an enlarged aorta till two days after the Ducks collapse in Arizona. I ask you , true loyalty or priorities out of wack ?

I hate to say it, but you may be right gobeavs64. Losing three years in a row to oregon is inexcusable! It seems the programs were equal the last decade and now are heading in different directions. We have reached our peak unless these coaches start innovating by recruiting defense to defend the spread and at least alter the offense a little and start recruitnig fast atheletes on offense! Speed is key and a dual threat QB. OR eventually new coaching. Look at Stanford and UO, they improved immensly by their coaches. Kelly turned that program around. I am not for getting rid of our coaches, I just think they need to adapt, innovate, not lose “who we are” but make some dramatic change that companys do to go from average to top tier. OSU is at a crucial period for its future! We need to be attractive to 15-19 yr olds. That is where the recruits are. I feel we don’t sell our program as well as OSU should. After SC we we have had more all conference players, player of the year awards, all americans, NFL players, NFL stars than any other pac 10 team. we have had the talent, just look at our WRs, RB’s and QB’s this decade. OSU needs to sell this program better and make it sexy. Some major PARADIGM shift must happen or the lousy schools of WA,WA ST and UCLA may pass us. Shoot look how fast AZ & Stanford improved. I’m worried. We need a BCS game and conference champ soon or will be always be doomed for best tied for 2nd or third and other seasons 5th or sixth in conference:(

What about that Mannion kid? I thought he was supposed to give Katz a run at QB next year. Thought I read he was bigger stronger and more athletic than Derek Anderson.
Cliff Kirkpatrick says:
Dec 10, 2010
Katz will be the guy for the next two seasons. Mannion will be the guy for the two after that.
osbeavs says:
Dec 10, 2010
The worst thing about that comment is that coaches don’t even allow for competition. Katz has to be internally motivated to get better because he knows he won’t lose his starting job. Internal motivation is the best kind but lets be honest, starters don’t deserve their jobs back if guys below them are better (not even Quizz/James).
RenoNVbeavr says:

How in the world did Tedford and Neiuheisal retain their jobs? I mean, Neihesal has like one .500 season as HC of the Bruins and is handsomely paid, at that. Tedford has to be the most overrated coach in college, salary and lack of production. Something is wrong if those coaches continue to have jobs.
Cliff Kirkpatrick says:
Dec 10, 2010
Neuheisel just started at UCLA. Tedford just has his first truly bad season. Firing coaches is not something programs like to do when they have a track record of knowing what to do.
And in California schools can’t pay off salaries as coaches sit at home and pay for others to do that work.
gobeavs64 says:

Hey Cliff , don’t college quarterbacks have to compete for their spots each season like they do in the pros ? I’m wondering if there might be an even better QB than Katz on our roster who’s being held back simply because it isn’t his turn yet. If that is how it is done then maybe it’s time to change that policy.
I still don’t understand why the Gazette is giving so much time to Oregon , it’s star players and now an ” Oregon Civil War celebration and the timing of it ” in another blog ? I think Beaver fans ( myself included ) are still feeling a little melancholy about this past season . We need good news , not pics of Duck fans or players celebrating their CW win , the third in a row none the less. We don’t need stories about how good the Ducks are doing or what awards their players are winning . Call it jealousy if you want , I think its bitterness over knowing we are going backwards while Stanford and Oregon go forward.
I am sure recruiting could be talked about , long range plans etc anything involving the team. Maybe even a best of feature that features a highlight in Beaver history. A memorable game or player. I don’t know , anything that is not Duck . Anything that can erase 2010 temporarily and make us feel good again, make us feel positive about our prospects for 2011
Cliff Kirkpatrick says:
Dec 10, 2010
1. All positions are developed. There was no QB on the active roster to challenge Katz. Mannion may, but that depends on how he does in spring and summer camp. However, he doesn’t have the experience and the reality of it is he’s two years behind Katz in development.
2. Oregon is going to the national title game. Ducks are No. 1 in the country, that’s why the coverage. We wouldn’t ignore the Blazers if they went to the NBA Finals. That’s crazy.
3. If you read the GT there was a recruiting story, a look forward, projected spring depth charts, Quizz thinking about the NFL and more. There will be plenty of OSU stories as needed. The blog will always be busy.

I concur!! Something to give us hope, stay optimistic, recruits to look forward to, ect. Living in this state is painful right now, Beaver fans living in other states are so lucky right now, esp if the ducks win it all. If they lose it’s fine because no one remembers second. I have no hate for the ducks, nor do I think about them until civil war, but with their great season (and our lousy for first time in awhile) and a big portion of classless fans, it makes me sick seeing all this yuck stuff. Especially living in Portland. We do need good news. HOPE is all we have.
gobeavs64 says:

Of course you would cover the Blazers , they are from Oregon after all . Not a good example I am afraid , Cliff . And yes , there have been stories about the Beavers already , not denying that at all . It is that those of us who have been Beaver fans through the good and the bad ( 40 plus years myself ) the ups and downs , have tasted success to a point and want , know our team is capable of more given the right keys. Some of us feel like we are taking steps back instead of forward like our counterparts down the road and it is painful. Maybe I am alone in this in reality , but it still sucks having to watch them glory in their accomplishments , one of which was beating us a 3rd time and force feeding us Duck news on a daily basis is enough to make you gag.
GO AUBURN !!
