It’s a miserable day at Reser Stadium for the Oregon State football game. It’s cold and wet.
The vibe is just dead. Granted, it’s a game against the lowly Washington State.
The highlight in the press box is the fellow scribes talking to my son, Hunter. He’s job shadowing me for the day. Everyone things he’s taking over for someone on the GT staff.
Anyway, it has been a quiet week leading up to the game. Feel free to comment or ask questions. The blog will be updated throughout the game.
The Beavers are wearing all black. What happened to orange and black? Or even black and white?
First quarter
Beavers start out in hurry-up but first drive stalls. Cougars playing dirty from the start. They have nothing to lose and are out to hurt people.
The defense on its heals on first drive. There were several missed tackles to Cougars could make a long drive. Bonehead penalties push them out of field goal range.
The way the game is going, I think a brawl may happen.
OSU couldn’t do anything with the ball, and was stopped on downs. WSU marched down the field to the 1-yard line and is about to score.
Second quarter
Two tries, and the Cougars are up 7-0 with 14:17 left in the half.
Beavers get a big break with WSU fumbles the punt return, but Justin Kahut misses a 35-yard FG wide left. It was a bad snap, but he’s just not having a good year. That’s 3 of 7 this season.
Cougars march up the field again. They get to the 1, and QB Jeff Tuel is shaken up. Three plays with the backup and WSU punches it in. Cougars lead 14-0 with 4:51 left in half.
Beavers had a drive going, but QB Ryan Katz throws a pick. Beavers hold.
Cody Vaz goes into the game. Katz puled. He couldn’t do any better. Another punt.
Halftime. Halfway through this stinker. My son just summed it up. The Beavers are playing badly.
Riley said Vaz went in for Katz because Katz was rattled after the INT he threw.
Third quarter
Cougars come out and score quickly on first drive and are up 21-0. My son just asked me if this is a blowout. Yes, it is, against a team like this.
Beavers turn the ball over on a kickoff return. Cougars bounced a ball off the the front line and recovered the ball.
DT Stephen Paea forced a fumble on a big hit. Beavers turn that into a 25-yard TD pass from Katz to Markus Wheaton. WSU still lead 21-0.
Fourth quarter
WSU responds with a 37-yard FG, after a long drive. Game, set match?
Beavers respond with a quick TD. Katz to Wheaton. WSU still up 24-14. There’s just not enough time to recover.
Heading down for interviews. It won’t be pretty.

I think Orange and Black should be our "standard" and black be reserved for special "Blackout" type games. I prefer the Orange jerseys.

agreed kyle. I really like that combo.

I hope the vibe will pick up a bit. Even though it is crappy out i hope the fans come out and show some support. But even if the fans arent coming out today, what matters most is that the Beavs are fired up. They need to be. If the beavers lose this one it will be ugly for Riley and the staff. Now lets go beavers!!!

we need a big game from him. Quizz needs a big game from him and the rest of the big boys upfront. Lets hope they get it done.
thanks for all the hard work cliff, us faithful blog followers appreciate it.

It's no 23 point spread game, especially the way both teams are starting.

The Cougs are playing a bit dirty arent they? I expected more class from Wulff's boys.
RMD says:
May 18, 2012
They're playing with attitude. WE NEED TO PLAY THAT WAY. We're playing like Betty F#@KING White.

WSU is taking advantage of all the weaknesses OSU has shown. Poor contain on QBs around the end, poor coverage when the ball is "underthrown" to WR's back shoulder, and running where Olander is hurt.
Fortunately, the cougs are too jacked up and are making stupid late hits.

Cliff, what is todays attendence? seems like a decent crowd.

Don't know, yet. It will be around 45,000.

ANOTHER late hit/shove NOT CALLED by the refs.
This has the makings of something getting out of control before Pac-10 refs take control.

This is going to get ugly, the refs need to get this game in control NOW they need to toss #12 he is going to kill someone.

Right call by Riley to go for it. Horrible blocking by the boys upfront.

RMD says:

Cliff,
Be honest…I don't think the future (i.e. next year) looks promising for this team. Everyone loves to brag about the walk-ons we have starting on this team. i for one think that's a bad sign…means that recruits haven't panned out.
ckirkpatrick says:
May 18, 2012
I've said that before the season started.
Kyleaelliott says:
May 18, 2012
Yeah, we left 1 in Seattle and 1 in LA… We are about to lose 2 in Corvallis
RMD says:

That would be hilarious if it wasn't sooo true.

I am out of things to say. I don't want to watch anymore, I think I am done with Beavers football for awhile. It is not good for my health.
aaron_ says:
May 18, 2012
i know kyle. i feel your pain. the stress and the consuption of PBR to numb the pain is not good for my health. I cant wait for baseball to start. This is a sorry excuse for a team. We should be better than this. I am not saying RoseBowl material, but we are a good team with good talent. The coaching and lack of effort is killing me. Quizz may as well just go pro. Why come back for more of this garbage?
Kyleaelliott says:
May 18, 2012
I just posted that exact comment about Quizz on another site… Why would he? Why should he? Risk his career and life for a 6-6 team that cant give him two steps on a zone block run?
wrightcbw says:

I am done with this game.

Out coached by Paul Wulf, out efforted by the Cougs. Wonder how the media is going to spin this one!

aaron_ says:
May 18, 2012
the media doesnt spin it, Angry, Riley does. Cliff knows this team is playing like a pile of dung. Buker does too. So does Brooks. Everybody does. At this point there is nothing to be spun.

Banker should be embarrassed
aaron_ says:
May 18, 2012
i was a Banker backer, but now i see he needs to be replaced. He does not adapt to changes well at all.
RMD says:
May 18, 2012
I don't think he has the personel to adapt. They need to re-evaluate the HS players they are recruiting on defense (and O-Line).
wrightcbw says:
May 18, 2012
I totally agree on the recruting comment. Why do we have so many walk-on's on both sides of the line. I understand 1 or 2 (i.e. Mike Hass), but look at these guys, they just dont have the build to be playing PAC-10 football.
aaron_ says:

Seems like it past time to pull Phillip. Ya think?
RMD says:

Maybe good coaches can teach the same thing all year in hopes that players improve.
Apparently, WINNING coaches make adjustments.
73GradMike says:

PLEASE learn how to contain around our defensive ends. Terrible scheme – terrible execution. WAY too often.
aaron_ says:
May 18, 2012
i was thinking the same thing…Where in the hell was miller on that Tuel run for a near 1st down.
Mike you need to refreh your page to see the additional comments….
wrightcbw says:
May 18, 2012
totally agree with Miller. That has been a weak spot all season long. You can't convert a TE to DE in 1 year. Sucks that LaGrone left, that really hurt. We haven't had any good DE's the past 2 years.
Kyleaelliott says:
May 18, 2012
Can we please start a discussion about our D and the person who does our Scheme.
RMD says:
May 18, 2012
I'm done. Can't watch fourth quarter. This team has given up. Defense is as bad as the teams that we used to field in the early 90's. No contain, horrible against the pass and run. No one hits hard, no attitude. It's like watching a high school team. I've been on the side of the coaches, but I can't anymore. Langsdorf has to go.
Entire coaching staff has to re-evaluate who they are recruiting. These are not Pac-10 caliber players we have on defense.
Stick a fork in us we're done.
73GradMike says:
May 18, 2012
Get a clue, Langsdorf. Zero for 10 on pass attempts to make a first down. Maybe we might try a run?
RMD says:
May 18, 2012
I think that's a sit down chat Riley needs to have with the AD. You know he probably hasa say. Hopefully, he knows how to say "you're fired" to Langsdorf.
73GradMike says:

Hats off to WSU. They outplayed and outcoached the Beavs all game (and all week?) long.

we cannot figure out how to defend a running qb.
RMD says:
May 18, 2012
Have you not been watching this year. WE CAN'T DEFEND AGAINST A RUNNING QB. We lose every one of those games. Couldn't last year either. Banker must think that QBs shouldn't run (that's just not polite). BTW, I love watching our pass rush almost get to the QB, but we always take sh^tty angles and miss…coaching anyone???
