There, I jinxed it. We still have a month of wild Saturdays.
Oregon State rejoined a group of four teams scratching for bowl eligibility. Don’t worry Beavers fans, it doesn’t look good for any of them but some of them must stumble their way into the postseason.
1. Oregon (9-0, 6-0): Even when the Ducks come out uninspired against a lower-level team, they still put up big numbers.
2. Stanford (8-1, 5-1): That was a big win over the Wildcats to solidify the No. 2 spot in the conference. Now Cardinal can’t let down.
3. Arizona (7-2, 4-2): A tough loss, but it was expected. The Wildcats just have to finish strong and they can say it was a good season.
4. Southern California (6-3, 3-3): Trojans keep plugging along, knocking teams around.
5. UCLA: (4-5, 2-4): Bruins are not that good, but did enough to give themselves a shot at a bowl game. They will be good soon.
6. Oregon State (4-4, 3-2): That was a bad loss to UCLA any way you slice it. The Beavers can do better, it’s just a matter of if they do.
7. Washington (3-6, 2-4): Even without leader of the pack Jake Locker there was someĀ fight in those dogs. Now must win last three to go bowling.
8. California (5-4, 3-3): Hey, the first road win. Granted it was in Pullman, but it’s a win. Bowl eligibility still a possibility.
9. Arizona State (4-5, 2-4): That was a good effort at USC. Sun Devils must win last three for bowl eligibility due to two I-AA wins this year.
10. Washington State (1-9, 0-7): I was pulling for the Cougars against Cal. If there was a Pac-10 win, that could have been the one.
Time to head back home. Here’s a song from Slash that says it all for the Beavers.

OSU's coaching cost them this game. Mark Banker, Mike Cavanaugh, and Danny Langsdorf all need to be shown the door after this season! A 6-6 season this year is being hopeful, 5-7 is more of a possibility. OSU made UW and UCLA look like BCS teams! Mike Riley needs to grow a pair and clean house during the offseason! OSU doesn't deserve to go to a bowl this year, Instead, They should stay at home and watch other teams win games and become hungry to improve for next season! If they get "rewarded" for going to some crap bowl, they won't learn anything from this season! 6-6 is a losing season and a disgrace for Oregon State Football! Beaver Nation pays more and deserves more than we did 11-12 years ago! End the mediocrity and complacency! Play to win Dang it!

I would agree that changes need to be made. They have lost to two absolutely horrible teams in uw and ucla, and the bsu game was pathetic.
I think this season's stink does need to be put in perspective with two fabulous previous seasons. But, the last two cw's have been horrific, and our d has been sliding.
In thinking about this year's team and past years (even the years of horror) this has been one of the worst coaching jobs and features such a group of underachievers that I think I've ever seen. We've had less talent and worse coaches, but the awful effort, lack of improvement and urgency and lack of leadership from both staff and players has been pretty discouraging.

this loss was pitiful. The D played decent, but not at critical times. The offense was awful. The line played like crap. I dont blam Olander for getting in Linnenkohl's face and calling him out. We are wasting the time of one of the best running backs we have ever had. Block for the damn kid. But we also only gave it to him 14 times. Shame on you for that Langsdorf. reallly shame on you, how can you justify that one?

I'm afraid if some major changes don't happen in the offseason, OSU football might become the current version of Wazzu? Falling to the cellar in the new Pac-12 is not where OSU wants to be, nor should be. There goes your 12,000 by 2012 campaign! This is a crucial and serious time for the future of OSU Football folks! Mike Riley needs to do some self reflecting this offseason and make improvements and adjustments. The same old same old isn't working! Time to be a little more open minded and change up a lot of things!
Food for thought: What would be more motivating to OSU football in the offseason, than to watch your hated Rival win a National Championship while you and your teammates are sitting at home?
I would train SO hard, be driven and motivated towards success, no stone would be left unturned if that happened to me! Nothing would hurt more than that scenario.

Cliff,
I would like some clarification on the helmet to helmet hit on Quizz. One of the announcers tried to explain it away because he went up in the air and, "… you don't know where he's going to come down."
?
That goes against common sense. You know precisely where he's going to come down since he's given up the ability to change direction. Using that logic, the NFL should have done nothing when Todd Heap was popped under the chin earlier this year by Merriwether.
I think Frahm (?) should have been called on one later in the game as well, so it's not as iff I think we're angels who are being picked on. i just think the league officials are saying they take safety seriously and act in an opposite manner. The plays that were called on this rule almost seemed they would not have been called if the first was not embarrassingly missed. I'm sure the refs caught an earful after Quizz' hit.

Another inconsistency was Remmers' late hit late in the game which cost us possession (eventually). UCLA O-linemen were chipping off the pile late all game long–in some cases later than Remmers' push. Why call it correctly when they had been ignoring it for the bulk of the game?

Beavers lost because they were out coached, out played, and UCLA's desire to win! OSU seemed to care less, and it showed all game long. OSU didn't lose because of ticky tack penalties, an extra second on the clock, or helmets flying off. We as fans should be more concerned about the wheels falling off of the program, rather than helmets falling on to the field! Although, it's questionable why there was no flag with the helmet to helmet spear hit on Quizz? That is the least of OSU's concerns IMHO. Quizz only has 14 carries the entire game? No timeouts called with 2:00 left? You allow a WR to not only catch the ball, but also allow him to get out of bounds in FG range with 1 second left? How open could that guy be? The defense was caught off guard by QB Brehaut running the ball? Who hasn't seen OSU's defense vs a running QB? Duh, Hello!!! Not to mention the horrendous inept play calling by Langsdorf once again! The Cal game was fools gold, we saw the real OSU team last night. The 9th week of the season shouldn't resemble the 1st week of the season! We should be able to see improvements by now. The #1 SOS really payed off this year for the Beavers (sarcasm).

exquisetly said. for once I have nothing to add. You've pretty much summed it up!

I'm not saying we played well enough to win. I'm not even saying that the call on Remmers mattered in the long run.
I was speaking directly to player safety and the lack of it from the referees. Quizz' hat came off because UCLA's #8 used the crown of his helmet to hit Quizz under the chin while Quizz was vulnerable. This was a clear call to be made according to the rules for safety in our league. And if the refs are not going to call it, then the league should just announce that they don't really care.
As I said, there was an instance which wasn't as clear late in the game where one of our linemen hit Brehaut helmet to helmet after he threw the ball. I think this one should have been called as well.
Safety is the topic of my questions. Late chips can be included. Many times UCLA linemen were hitting our defenders well after the whistle and they were not called. If they weren't called for those hits but our guys were just because UCLA's guys 'wanted it more', then the refs can just tell us that's why they called the game that way. I don't think this was the case.
JackBeav says:

All in all, it was a pathetic game on both sides. If that's UCLA 'wanting it more', then I don't think anyone really wanted anything… except maybe to be somewhere other than on the field.

The talent is there for this team. It is people can say what they want that we dont get the recruits, shoot i even say that, but these boys have developed into decent palyers. Our o-line is a good one, not a great one and they are playing like crap. Our TE/H-backs are good. Our wr's are really good, very deep at that position. Qb is inexperienced, but good. Our DL is good, but not really playing up to par. The LB's are good to average. The DB's are good to average. We have deent depth at all positions. The specials teams are good. The only thing this team is lacking is coaching. I like Riley adn i think he is a good headcoach. But he needs to jump up langsdorf and bankers asses. They are the reason the beavers are struggling. The players are there, the coaching up of the players is not. I like Cav too, but i want to see some serious bear crawls after this disaster.

Hey Cliff,
Do you know anything about the contracts of the assistant coaches- namely Mark Banker and Danny Langsdorf. A lot of folks all over Beaver nation are calling for their heads but is OSU willing/able to let these guys go? It would be an answer of much interest for your readers.

Am I wrong in thinking that if we miraculously managed to win all of our remaining games , Stanford included , wouldn't we still have a chance at the Rose Bowl provided Oregon doesn't end up settling for the roses ? Just wondering . I think everyone here is right , if things continue to go down hill from here to conclude the season , changes in assistant coaches must be made and Riley must adapt to a new system maybe even try to lure away one of of Oregon's coaches I hate talking like that , but we need some energy , some creativity . Any one up for a letter writing campaign or petition to the OSU A.D ?

First, we cannot go to the Rose Bowl even if we win out. We would have two loses in the Pac-10, it would require the Ducks to lose two games (one of which would be to us in your scenario). In your scenario, Ducks are likely one loss and not in the NCG but the Rose Bowl. We would likely play the Holiday while the Alamo takes Stanford (because they can select whoever they want).
Second, we couldn't lure away an Oregon coach, even if we did it wouldn't do any good. That program is Chip Kelly's brain child, without him they would look like they did in 2006, slightly above mediocre.
