PASADENA, Calif. — Simply put, the Oregon State football team blew a golden opportunity in a 17-14 loss to UCLA. Check out the above video of coach Mike Riley afterward.
“I am heartbroken,” CB James Dockery said. “UCLA came out to play. They made one more play than we did today.”
Dockery referenced the 51-yard FG Kai Forbath made to win the game, after missing two earlier in the game.
“I was shocked he missed two to begin with,” Dockery said. “We knew he was one of the best field goal kickers in the country. But you give a great player a chance he’ll make a great play.”
“He’s a great kicker,” Riley said. “We were fortunate he missed the ones he did earlier.”
Here’s a link to my main story in Sunday’s GT about the offensive issues. Here’s a link to my secondary story on how UCLA ran up and down on the Beavers.
Here’s a link to the Game Center play-by-play. Here’s a link to the report card. First F given in a while. Here’s the notes and stats package.
The main injury to come out of the game was starting DT Brennan Olander. He may have separated his right shoulder. That’s a big blow to the position with Castro Masaniai already out with a separated shoulder.
RB Jacquizz Rodgers was hot after the game. Must of what he said will be in my main story. Here’s some leftovers.
He was asked about the hit he took that knocked off his helmet. The question was about it being helmet to helmet.
“That’s football,” Rodgers said. “That don’t faze me. You have to come harder than that.”
Rodgers questioned the effort by the team against a lesser team in the standings.
“We have to approach every week the same,” Rodgers said. “It doesn’t matter if we are playing the top ranked team or not.”
So it there was lacking effort this week?
“I’m not saying that,” Rodgers said. “The way we play against good teams and the way we play against teams not ranked high, it’s a big difference.”
Also, there’s talk that there was a little scuffle between Olander and C Alex Linnenkohl. Olander was reportedly mad Linnenkohl wasn’t given enough effort or doing well. I didn’t see what happened. We’ll see if there’s anything interesting develops about this.

It may have been a homer clock at the end, but the Beavs were damn lucky to be tied anyway with Forbath missing his two previous attempts. Also, I would love to know why the secondary was not protecting the sideline given the game situation on that last play? My guess is Banker had them in a prevent thinking that Chow was going for a Hail Mary or maybe the defense was not thinking at all(fairly typical of this year). Quick 10 yard out executed flawlessly by a backup QB, best place kicker in the nation, end of story.

I am really excited for the Beavs…… if their lucky they will get another lower tier bowl game!
Does anyone know if Chip Kelly has a brother that coaches?

These should have been Mike Riley's words " We didn't deserve to win this game , but then we didn't deserve to get hosed like that either . I will personally look into having this game reviewed. " Outside of that , lack of coaching , talent , fundamentals and consistency and running stagnant offensive plays doomed this team as well as no talent defensively for this game and most likely the remainder of the season.

We played not to lose, instead of playing to WIN! I'm so sick and tired of mediocrity! I will not fork out the money this year just to go to a crappy bowl game, it's not worth it! 6-5 is a losing season for Oregon State this year, as far as I'm concerned. In 1999, that would be considered a good season. We are beyond that and 10+ years later, we as fans deserve more! Mike Riley needs to get rid of some coaches in the off season, Mark Banker must go (can't stop a spread offense or a running QB ever!), Mike Cavanaugh must go, and Langsdorf needs to go too! Bring in some coaches with guts, intensity and who can flat out coach! Losing to TCU, or Boise State isn't that bad looking at where they both are now. But losing to a rebuilding UW and UCLA is inexcusable! We are making the same mistakes as we were during week #1, it's week #9 now! Coaching is what cost us the game tonight!

Wow, have you changed your tune since the first of the week! You are finally becoming a realist. All your comments are dead on! Danny's play calling, except for Wheaton's TD was totally noncreative as usual. Two 3 and outs in the last 4:24 certainly wouldn't have happened with at least a bit of innovation from the offensive coordinator, and perhaps we even give ourselves a chance to even score or at least don't give them the ball back vs our nothing defense. Just ponder this–we barely managed 14 points vs a team the ducks laid 60 on last week, or was it two weeks ago? I have been watching their superior play calling for so long it's hard to keep track. Too bad Mike and Danny aren't learning anything.

I was amazed at how our Beavs came out lacking very little enthusiasm on either side of the ball. Truly amazing. No one was flying around, no one put a big hit on any Bruin ball carrier.
That being said, I thought the discussion on TV during the Oregon/UW game about 5 or 6 Duck coaches with 20+ years of experience was amazing. Continuity is important. So let's not throw out Mike and his staff quite yet. I'm sure that back in the day when Oregon's defense gave up 50 a game that fans wanted their DC gone….but he's still there…..and they're not giving up very many points…..

It doesn't matter if your defense allows 50 a game if your offense averages 60 a game! Trust me on this, Mark Banker needs to become a head coach somewhere else! Mike Cavanaugh needs to go, he came from Hawaii when has Hawaii ever been known for running the football? The Offensive line can't run the ball, or protect Katz very well! Quizz can run the ball, and he is doning it on his own! Langsdorf needs to learn new plays, and stop being so one dimensional and dag gum predictable! Face it, It's coaching folks. Coaching cost us both UW and UCLA, they are both rebuilding. After tonight we are officially rebuilding too, only it's week 9! Sadly, 5-7 looks much more realistic than 6-6 or 7-5 at this point. It's very hard to get your 12,000 by 2012 with seasons like this one!

compare Chip's play calling to Danny's. Enough said!

Danny has not the age nor the experience to be a pac 10 OC. It was less than 20 years ago I was watching him QB the mcminnville high team. So after less than 20 years of coaching experience he qualifies as an OC for a division 1 team? Only mr. nice guy Riley would make that move.

12,000 by 2012 is going to be tough with a team like this one. Too many people thought things were fixed after the Cal game, but think about it. It was 28 – 0 at the half, we score on the first drive of the 3rd quarter then go into our "lets not lose this one" offense. This game was a continuation of that game. We have lost to UCLA and Washington, two teams we should never have lost to! Those games against TCU and Boise State really, really helped the Beavers. 12,000 by 2012 may not be realistic.

Does anyone really think this team can beat USC, Stanford or Oregon, after tonight? I don't! Beating just one of those teams will be a monumental upset. Even Wazzu might be a nail biter next week? 6-6 at best, 5-7 is more realistic. I wonder what kind of recruits we will get with one of those records while our rival wins a National Championship? Gotta love mediocrity, and playing not to lose instead of playing to win! (sarcasim) The OSU program needs a BCS/ 2000 type season real soon! Going to a crappy 6-6 bowl is only a moral victory, not a successful season!

A 6-6 season is not a moral victory. A moral victory occurs when you feel good about what you have done despite losing. I don't think many people feel good about the effort of the Beavers this season.

Yeah,it seemed like everyone kind of blew off Kevin Riley getting injured as no big deal in the Cal game including the media. The victory was apparently Fools Gold as both sides of the ball showed major regression against UCLA. it will be interesting to see the ramifications of a 5-7 season after being in the Rose Bowl mix for two years in a row and the start slow, finish strong trend ending.

I thought that was incredibly questionable play calling too. What were are chances of going 70 yards in a minute and change and kicking a field goal anyway?! Play for the OT and run some clock and DO NOT give the ball back to UCLA!

Great, now we've got in-fighting on this team. Riley better take control fast or this team will spiral. let's see we've got WSU, USC, Stanford, Oregon. I see one win out of the next 4.

WCJR , you may be right about my opinion changing about things getting better for the Beavs in the future. See me after this season is over for a definite opinion . The underdog in me just can't say quit yet even though the level of pessimism in me is incredibly high right now. I want so much good for this team and I see so much talent on the team that I cannot help believing that if it was coached correctly , this team could be almost as dominant as Oregon. But there in lies the problem, it is not being coached correctly. Mike Riley is surrounded by incompetents. Why the hell are you throwing the ball with less than two minutes to play ? Why not run and run down the clock , settle for the overtime ? Jim said last night on the radio show after the game that OSU was better set to play the Kansas OT than UCLA was , I don't know if that is true but we should have at least tested it. Why can't you come up with new plays that better utilize Quizz's talent . Send him up the middle into a stone wall over and over ? With the proper coaching this could be a really good team , a good team that wouldn't just step up whenever it feels like it . That's another thing , Quizz was right , this team seems to only play against the better teams but you have to play against everyone not just the upper tier. Do you really think your that good that you can let down against teams like the Bruins and coast to a win ? Dream on . The fact that this team CAN play close or even beat the upper crust should be proof to all of us what this team is truly capable of with the PROPER coaching. No , I will never stop following my Beavs , I will not however get my hopes up anymore for anything beyond what they are capable of as long as the current coaching staff is in place . Oh yea , we shouldn't have been in the situation we were in at the end last night anyway but we still got screwed in a bad way and Riley needs to contest this one. Get some balls man.

Very well said young man, and your comments today are even better!! I'd love to vent with you, perhaps next Saturday if you have the time. I'm in the new parking structure, sw corner, 4th floor, and I bring nothing but the finest wine! I'm buyin" if you know what I mean. All my friends tell me I take Beaver Athletcs way too seriously(which I do). Many won't sit next to me at games. Great to run into someone as obsessed as I am! By the way , can you be any more pissed off when you look at the league standings and see both UW and UCLA at 2-4 knowing each have a win over us??? Remember, I'm buyin'

2 passes that both stop the clock, by the way. Even with our totally incompetent offensive line I think Quizz probably could have gained 3 yards in 2 carries. Typical of the play calling or our esteemed OC.
