First off, here’s a link to my main story in Friday’s GT about what the Oregon State football team must deal with in California’s running game on Saturday.
Here’s a link to my football notebook. It leads with the rise of DE Dominic Glover. The notes at the bottom has TV and ticket info.
Here are some leftover thoughts from the Beavers pertaining to Saturday’s game.
It’s an early one at 12:40 p.m., so get your tailgating going early. For those without DirecTV or high-end Comcast to see the game on TV, it will be replayed on FSN NW at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The above song remains my youngest son’s favorite at any time of year, but especially now, but check it out get you ready for the weekend. Will it be a trick, or treat, for the Beavers? It is orange and black around here all year. So his second favorite song is below.
Coach Mike Riley on Cal:
“Cal looked good in all phases of the game last week. They beat a very good team (Arizona State) convincingly. We have to look at it like we are going to get their best. They certainly rebounded from the USC game.”
Riley on Cal’s offense:
“They showed great balance in the last game. (QB) Kevin Riley played a great game and the receivers caught the ball. He has been around a long time and knows what he’s doing in the offense. I like their receivers. They showed what they can do last week.”
Riley on Cal’s new defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast’s defense:
“It’s creative and innovative. You see everything, all the blitzes. He has taken his philosophy and meshed it well. You have to play a solid, smart game up front.”
Riley on teams stopping the run:
“People know our runner and plan for it, but that can’t deter us. We have to block better, stay on blocks better and finish better.”
Riley on Oregon’s high ranking:
“They are deserving. They been the best, consistent and did a good job.”
Riley on the the strength of the Pac-10:
“I think it’s as good as it has ever been. It has been heading toward that with the rise of Arizona and resurgence of Stanford. Then you see the improvement in the UCLA program and Washington coming back. Oregon is consistent. Without a doubt this is the best balanced conference we’ve had since I’ve been in it.”
S Lance Mitchell on Kevin Riley:
“The quarterback is a good guy. He makes plays and gets it to the right person. It’s about staying in coverage this week.”
OLB Dwight Roberson on the defensive rotations:
“I like the way coach is working us. I like the nickel package and the regular lineup.”
Roberson on the bad defensive stats:
“We talked about that, especially during the bye week. When it comes down to it, teams will gain 500 yards and we can still win. But we want to improve that. We don’t want to be the bottom of the pile.”

What does Roberson's comment mean?
“teams will gain 500 yards and we can still win." This seems like a really odd thing to say.

I think it means yards are meaningless if teams don't score.
Seemed obvious.

Give up 500 yards without allowing them to score? Who are they… the Kragthorpe Beavs?
If you give up that much yardage, you are giving up a minimum of 21 points. And that's with take-aways. Since that is obvious to any reasonable football fan, why would not alowing a team to score logically follow giving up that kind of yardage?
I think he meant that we can hold the opposition to under 30, and we have a good to great chance to win due to our offense… sort of like UO giving up gobs of yards and points but still winning.

How are yards meaningless? Yards, in a best case scenario, tilt field position and make it more difficult for the offense to score. Is Roberson's football IQ really this low? I asked the question because I don't want to believe that, and I'm hoping there's a better explanation for such a defeatist attitude.

What maffub said. Bend but don't break. And the offense scores.

So what's it going to be guys, Orange or Black for tomorrow? Is Reser scheduled to have a "Black Out" this season? I heard a rumor that there is suppossed to be a "Black Out" vs USC on Nov. 20th!

OSU won't sponsor a blackout due to fear of being racist.

Banker also has a quote out there today something like "we don't seem that bad" when asked about his defense being ranked 119th out of 120 teams. Now with Robertson's quote there seems to be either shell shock or denial going on with the D!
