SEATTLE — What a dramatic finish in the Oregon State football team’s 35-34 Pac-10 loss to Washington on Saturday night.
The Beavers tried to win the game by going for two points in double overtime. TE Joe Halahuni just couldn’t pull the ball in with tight coverage.
“We thought we had a shot to win it,” coach Mike Riley said. “We thought we had the right play. It just didn’t work out. ”
You can talk about the defensive issues, the lack of blocking and QB Ryan Katz throwing a three picks. It wasn’t a pretty game. However, there was a ton off effort the last three quarters.
“It was such a bad start that we couldn’t do anything offensively and they were going up and down the field,” Riley said. “Then it flipped around and we got some moment and made some drives. And our defense picked it up and it became a football game.”
The Beavers rallied from 21 points down. That was a dramatic turnaround by the defense to decide to stop a powerful offense. There were turnovers and punts forced.
RB Jacquizz Rodgers played a tough game, and earned every tough yard. He gained 140 yards and scored three TDs.
“We did a good job getting the running game rolling after the beginning,” Rodgers said. “We just have to finish that game off. The defense played their butts off.”

GoBeave64…… Be careful that could be the CW score Ducks 42 Beavers 7 the way am seeing it. I sure hope I am wrong but they are smokin fast and Chip Kelly is a remarkable coach for what he has been able to do in such a short period of time. I am very envious. My next fear is the Ducks baseball team will win a national championship this year ranked 5th nationally in recruiting all ready. The Beavers 14th which is totally inexcusable.

Now we have sit around for two weeks and stew on this painful loss before we get a chance to play again. The Beavs just looked lousy last night, and there is enough blame to go around. I think with the schedule ahead we are in for a tough end to the season. Losing James did for us.
We all want to win so bad, and I know I wasn't the only fan who was having chest pains and a sick stomach at the end of the game. Part of the deal. My personal challenge is to not take it to serious and be all pissed off and grumpy around the house for the next week. (Maybe just for a couple of days…)

This is what you will see in this team from here on out when you loose half your offense with James Rogers getting hurt. This teams offense has been built around the Rogers Brothers. Katz was really being pressured because of a very average walk on group of offensive lineman and making poor decisions on top of that. Also the defensive scheme being used against the Beavs was right out of the BS and TCU playbook to a tee. Washington is lacking some talent but they are recruiting now very well and remember they beat USC in L.A and anybody who watched the Stanford vs USC game last weekend saw two very good teams in which the Beavers will struggle without James and a average deffense. It was clearly evident in the game last night James has the pure ability with his speed to seperate from defenders create space and catch the ball the other Beaver receivers could not and they dropped the ball. There are always allot of factors that play into a game but this is what I was seeing. I would love to have UofW coach he is a winner with an imagination.

the game was very dramatic. And i live out east and unfortunately i stayed up to watch the heartbreak, which ended at two. This one is on Katz. Two bonehead int's in the endzone.

Actually, I would say this one is on the defense, which is the second worst in the pac-10, barely.
Katz made some horrible decisions, but giving up 21 points early and 35 points overall is simply awful. You also have to consider the play calling kept putting Katz in some pretty tough spots, even I knew what was coming from our offense.
UW has some talent on offense, but to describe them as "powerful" is quite a stretch. They haven't put up great numbers, and our d playing about half the game at a decent level won't cut it in the pac-10.
It's really unbelievable how bad this defense has been. And it's time for some changes.

the defense gave up the early 21 points but the only other points came in OT. There would not have even been an OT if Katz had not thrown two bonehead Int's in the endzone. That is 14 points that the Beavs lost out on because of him alone. Score at the end of regulation should have been 35-21 OSU ove U Dub.
This loss is on Katz plain and simple. Not coach, not the D, not Tank, and not because of no James. The bad decisions at QB cost us the game, period.

The whole team effort stunk as did the play calling , but to get into Husky territory 6 straight times and come away with nothing ? Riley didn't learn from the last time the team was in this situation ? I knew he would go for the two pointer and I knew we wouldn't get it. Washington was ready for it . Can we say dejavue same score ? same end zone ? Somebody better be doing some serious work with Katz during the off week but overall this whole team and its coaching staff needs revamping . No matter where we end up at the end of the season it is time for Riley and his staff to go this program has gone from nowhere to mediocrity to…to… mediocrity maybe it's time to and oh my God I can't believe I am even thinking this , talk Bellotti out of retirement
osbeavs says:

Be honest with yourself, Bellotti is as mediocre as Riley, if not more so. The difference with Bellotti, he can spot offensive coordinators (look how many became very successful head coaches). Bellotti's success is linked to the coaches he finds, not his own talent.

We have had an opportunity to go to the Rose Bowl the last two years, I don't think that's mediocre. The fact that we have completely stunk in one of those games, and came up short in the other needs to be addressed.
Our defensive coaches/players do not have the capability to take us to the next level. There are too many weaknesses and way too many excuses. Given the last two cw's, change is past due.
I think Langsdorf has choked a little in the national tv games, I think he has some great days ahead as an oc. I think the lack of development at rb behind the starter(s) might be coaching, but our offensive players do get better.
This game was another horrible one, and there have been too many already this season, but I don't think calling for Bellotti is the right answer.

We HAD an opportunity to go to the Rose Bowl bowl but couldn't get past that hump known as Oregon , a team with quality players and coaching half our team are walk ons and walk ons are usually walk ons for a reason. They couldn't make it on other teams. Not saying they don't deserve a chance but we need to be doing some recruiting that brings in quality players and we need a coaching staff that can not only get us ALMOST to the Rose Bowl but get us to the Rose Bowl. Coaches who will call plays that make sense. I am thinking that maybe we should have taken our chances in another overtime but that's just me I suppose. We did build the offense around the James brothers and now were paying for it . I don't care what anyone says , no team can college or pro can win week after week on the back of one person, other teams eventually catch on . The defense lacks talent and size and speed . With Stanford , USC, and Oregon down the road we might as well be playing TCU and Boise State every week

I just disagree with the final play call. I just don't get why Riley did this. If anything, why didn't he call a fake punt in the 4th quarter and try to win this in regulation. I don't know. Ever since the bowl game last year Riley and his staff just haven't had their heads in the game,

This really stunk it up last night reguarding play calling in the third and fourth quarter. Beavers get the ball back first down the dogs stack the box the play Quizz straight up the middle over and over and over getting stuffed sometimes for a loss. Ummm………… maybe try a different play on first down. It was unbelievable to watch. Now Quizz had a great game overall but come on Danny!

Oregon State's Defense is among the worst in college football! They average giving up 450 yards per game!!! Most teams that give up that many yards are now 1-6! Our D-line was constantly getting pushed around, Our Linebackers are s.l.o.w. and always out of position, and Brandon Hardin is an easy touchdown for any opposing team! (Start Jordan Poyer over Brandon Hardin) Truth is OSU should have never allowed UW to be in the game in the first place! The ONLY thing that kept us in the game was our EFFORT! This team never gave up and played hard until the very end! But we lost.
Do we even have an Offensive Line??? 5 walk-ons are NOT getting it done! They are small and slow, don't protect Katz, don't create holes for Quizz! Also, what is wrong with having multiple running backs, multiple looks on offense? Oregon State should have an automatic 5-10 yard play!

And to add salt to the wounds……..
Oregon State and oregon are going two opposite directions. You look at Oregon State's schedule and see one maybe two teams the Beavers should beat. Look at oregon's schedule and you see one(USC) and maybe two(Arizona) that oregon could lose to. This sucks! It will be a big green & yellow lovefest parade until they lose (if they even lose)! Beavers will be lucky to be .500 and go to the kraftfighthungercrapiest-Bowl, worst bowl bowl game in FBS Division 1! Usually I try to stay positive, but after last night I can't.

And with a bye week, instead of practicing to improve offensive line play, linebacker play, and tackling, I bet the coaching staff gives the team some extra days off…

In their last 8 games, OSU is 3-5. With the exception of Louisville, none have been weak opponents (though UW is far from being a powerhouse). Defense gives up a lot of yards. This season is 30.8 pts per game. The offense just can't keep up.

OSU4life, Dude, try to stay positive. It hurts now but you got to press on, smile around the house, go to work on Monday and all that. What it is, is every single year we all have these great expectations for something special, like the Fiesta Bowl year, and every single year, after waiting all spring and summer, we blow it in September, drop out of the National picture, and end up mediocre. There is ALWAYS a loss or two like this, EVERY year, where I want to just say, "screw it, I got to stop watching the Beavs, I'm losing years off my life." But then there I am on Sunday, reading the GT and the Oregonian and Cliff's blog etc. Just can't get enough of it. I've found that drinking heavily helps, but otherwise, what are ya gonna do? It's in our DNA…
OSU4life says:

Tommiet, I'm in the same boat as you and I have the same expectations as does 99.9% of Beaver Nation! However, I absolutely refuse to accept mediocrity and that it's in our DNA! I call for a mutation, a buck in the system, change! Why don't we go to the Junior College ranks and get some immediate help? (like the Fiesta Bowl year) Get the most speed as possible on the field for defense & offense! Like moving people around, Hardin to safety, Poyer to corner, Roberson to MLB, etc…! Or, if there are underclassmen who are better than the starters, why not play them? We need to recruit not only better athletes, but faster athletes! On offense, every receiver should be a burner, not just 2! Seems like every team we played so far is much faster than us, bigger than us, and more athletic than us and stronger physically than us. Coaching, and mental toughness can only go so far, eventually talent takes over. Talent can sometimes make up for mistakes too! Go Beavs!

Laugh In news of the future, 2011. Tweekers, bongers and pot heads all over Eugene Oregon gathered tonight at an empty Autzen Stadium parking lot to hold a bonfire and smoke in rally in support of the Oregon Ducks football team who played in this years Orange Bowl for the national championship. Apparently they were unaware that the game was held the night before and that Alabama destroyed the Ducks 42 – 7 . A good time was had by all…until local law enforcement arrived.
