Oregon State WR James Rodgers is out for Saturday’s game at Washington, coach Mike Riley said Sunday night. Rodgers hurt his left knee during the Arizona game.
He is in a brace and on crutches. The MRI was done late Sunday so there are no results. They are expected back Monday. Here’s the full story on this that ran in Monday’s GT.
If it’s a long-term injury, the Beavers will apply for a medical hardship wavier so he can come back. OSU clarified the percent rule with the NCAA and Rodgers is eligible for the hardship waiver.
TE Brady Camp (back) is expected back this week. C Alex Linnenkohl (ankle) is questionable. He also had a big cut on his forehead.
The Beavers moved back into into the AP poll at No. 24. It’s odd that Arizona dropped to only No. 17 and lost head-to-head with the Beavers.
“I think a lot of people went to bed early,” Riley said.
Quick hits
This is the first time since 2003 the Beavers won the first two games in Pac-10 play. … RB Will Darkins caught his first career pass in the game. … S Suaesi Tuimaunei’s interception was the first of his career.

The main fallout I see is that OSU getting hosed over and over by the PAC-10 officials must stop! Enough is enough! Someone should count how many touchdowns and big plays are taken away from OSU, and how many big plays are "GIVEN" to their opponents over the course of the season by PAC-10 officials! It is ridiculous!!! Also, the horse collars, facemasks, ripping off helmets, needs to be addressed and there needs to be justice!

"And something we continually stress to our booth officials is there must be indisputable video evidence to overturn a call. Sometimes, we spent far too long looking to reverse the call. And we're asked, 'If you spend two minutes debating a call then how can it be indisputable if you reverse it?'
That quote just about says it all about the TD pass James caught in the back of the end zone. How does a booth official reverse an on-field call after taking that long to come up with "indisputable video evidence?"
The helmet problem seems to be somewhat universal. I'm assuming there has been some kind of design change that wasn't properly researched. There seem to be helmets lying around in just about every game I watch.

I think players aren't wearing their chinstraps tight enough. Nice way to get your mug on the TV. Miami started this in the 80's, they purposefully took of their helmets, reasoning that if everyone got to see the basketball teams faces then theirs could be seen also. It is now a penalty to take off your helmet to show off. Creative way of showing off?

Regarding the helmet problem, I've head some sources say the kids are wearing longer hair these days and that's a big part of it. When there is shorter hair it hugs the head tighter. I don't know, but it makes sense.

I think not fastening all the chinstraps is the cool thing to do. There are some players that always have one or two of the four straps just dangling there. Maybe modern helmets are uncomfortable….we never touched our chinstraps back in the day while on the field. Seems like QBs have enough going on out there without having to go through a chinstrap on/off and mouthguard in/out ritual twice every play.

No way can you give special teams a B if you are including the kicking game. The only possible grade is F!!! A senior Division 1 kicker does not miss PAT'S! And 2 in a row, absolutely unforgiveable and TOTALLY unacceptable. Justin has basically sucked for three years(many missed field goals under 40 yards and rarely getting kickoffs past the opposing team's 15 yard line, not to mention other missed points after), please give him his degree and tell him to "just get out!" We are all tired of every FG attempt and point after being a scary adventure. The point after should be damn close to automatic for a PAC 10 Division 1 kicker. So if special team's grading includes placekicking, not just 1 but 2 missed PAT'S can be nothing but an F!

I started splitting the grades this year due to Kahut. I should have done that here. Great special teams, but him.
He should have had a D by himself.
Fs are failures or the direct cause of the loss, and I've given them to special teams and the QB. QBs threw a ton of INTs or the kickers stink. If you win the game, there was not enough to be a failure.

I think the officials missed calls is more of just across the board terribleness of PAC10 officiating. I've seen equally horrendous calls in other PAC10 games. Every game Jay Stricker referees, there is numerous missed calls. I will say the booth reviews are really bad. They need to institute the NFL rule of 1 minute to look, if they can't find anything then the call stands. Of course that doesn't stop pure incompetence.

I agree about Stricherz (sp?). I cringe when I see him, especially when they put him on marquee games. Don't know how that guy is employed.

Riley needs to step it up with the officials on 1) making challenges of bad calls and 2) protecting his players. He doesn't do either enough, the first is a strategic mistake, the second is just both amazing and irresponsible. When opposing players are going after your team, as we've seen with cheap shots on both James and Quizz (BSU, ASU, and UA), Riley needs to get after the officials.

How is Riley supposed to do this "protecting his players" you speak of? Break away from the game so he can look at replays? THAT would be "amazing and irresponsible"!!!
Unless they're right in front of him, Riley can only see these things during the film session afterwords. In that case I GUARANTEE you that he is taking his players case up with the Pac-10 office. Do you honestly think Mkie Riley would not stick up for his players???
One last note… in the past decade we have seen "classiness" drop to heretofore unprecedented lows. Do you REALLY want Mike Riley to behave that way? Air his dirty laundry through the media? Or would you rather have him continue to comport himself with dignity and take care of unpleasant business behind closed doors?
I would choose the latter approach… every time.

Cliff,
It is obvious that JR will be out at least until the Cal game, and probably longer. Based upon the MRI results, generally how long does it take the Pac-10 to evaluate JR's case to determine if he will be granted a medical redshirt?
My reasoning is if JR can play ANY games this year, is better to have him for 1 or 2 games, if he is not granted a redshirt, than not play him at all. Or if we can get an answer quickly from the Pac-10, it would be better to have him for whole year in 2011. Thanks.

Medicals are given out in March or February. When doing this, OSU must be certain they will win. If he can get back, even for a bowl game, medicals are not approved.

Even that is always skeptical. I guarantee you a reputable doctor will sign off on holding out the player for the knee issue. I've never seen the NCAA doctor challenge the team doctor on what is "good to go."
This is all sad really. Isn't James on schedule to graduate….how do we know he even had it in his plans to play next season? He may have something good already lined up in life.
It's also sad because it was a cheap shot….yes, it happens all the time, but maybe we need to think about this. Had he been out of bounds we'd have had a penalty called, but 5 feet deep in the endzone, we don't?
I am really disappointed in the officials this year. Bob D. needs to put the heat on this as well and Riley needs to step to the plate and call out the officials and other coaches, if necessary.
Remember the hit on Canfield some years back by USC? Another cheap shot that resulted in all of Canfield's problems.

we don't know what James wants to do but it would be nice if all options are available should he be done for the season. It could change his draft stock a ton to have a solid senior season verse coming back from an injury.

they would be rolling the dice big time if they are not sure they'd get it. On his future and their season.

It is not rolling the dice if he is really done for the year.
aaron_ says:

This is true. But I was talking about if his is not truly done and he can come back for a couple games at the end, but they shut him down to try and bring him back next year. But yes, if he is done, he is done.

Have to say, it looks like an ACL. If he has surgery on the ACL he is undoubtedly done for the season. Bottomline, ACL's really take almost an entire year before you are back to full-go.
