TUCSON, Ariz. — Check out the postgame video of Oregon State football coach Mike Riley talking to the media after the Beavers upset No. 9 Arizona 29-27 on Saturday night. He talks about the condition of WR James Rodgers and the night QB Ryan Katz had.
Here’s a link to my main story in Sunday’s GT on how Katz emerged at the main. Here’s a link to the sidebar on Rodgers. Here’s the report card. Here’s the notes package. Here’s the game center, which is the play-by-play.
Rodgers update
News wasn’t positive about Rodgers. He left the game on crutches. There will be an MRI on Sunday, but results won’t be know until Tuesday.
“James’ condition is not good,” Riley said. “I’m not going to tell you the specifics of it (until later).”
If this is a long-term injury Rodgers is eligiblie for a medical hardship, according to OSU. He has not redshirted and not played 30 percent of the season because he missed last week with a concussion.
The rule is if a player has played less than 30 percent of his season he is eligible. If the NCAA says he played in four games, that 33 percent of his season.
If it’s taken into account that he missed half of this last game and a quarter of the Boise State game due to injuries, he’s well below 30 percent.
Wheaton quote board
“I honestly didn’t think he could make it,” Wheaton said of Katz’ 46-yard TD pass to him. “It was 50 yards, and it was on the run. I didn’t think he would see me.”
“Their D-line was pretty powerful,” Wheaton said. “That’s were their strength was, so we had to attack the DBs. That’s why we opened it up.”
“We didn’t panic as much because of last week, but we need him,” Wheaton said of the loss of Rodgers.

Something really needs to be done about Pac-10 officiating! They are the worst in college football! During "official reviews" they spend 5 minutes reviewing a play, and still get the play wrong! OSU had 2 TD's that should have counted vs Arizona! Pac-10 officials hate OSU for some reason.

The play Rodgers was injured on was dirty. James was five yards plus into the end zone and was letting up when he got picked up and slammed. That was despicable. But the fact that no penalty was called on the Az player was disgraceful (and unfortunately predictable).
James Rodgers career at OSU is quite possibly over as a result of a dirty play and there was no sanction at all from the referees. That is flat-out unacceptable.

Couldnt agree more. I wondered where the flag for late hit was, why are you tackling someone who ran 5 yards into the endzone?

James has the option to take a medical redshirt this season. So if he is out for the season he can come back next year.

Great game by the beavs, both sides are really starting to come together, really need to work on stopping the big play still though, and stopping the other team on 3rd downs.
I am starting to think that some of the supposed weaknesses of the team were due to such a hard schedule.

Nitpicking aside, my only negative criticisms are aimed at both the on-field and replay officials.
More importantly … WOW!!!
BEAVS PLAYED GREAT!
Yes, the defense was inconsistent; but their questionable plays were outnumbered by their outstanding plays.
The offense was WAY better on their outstanding plays versus their questionable plays. Especially as the game went on, all parts of the offense played better and better. The OL blocked well on both runs and passes (especially passes). The WRs found open areas consistently. (James Rogers was AWESOME in the 1st half with over 100 yards receiving!). Quizz was tough as nails. Halahuni played very well. And then Katz …
Katz looked like a future NFL star today. Poise, bravery, accuracy, touch, and laser-dart throws with impressive zip – WOW, he had it all.
Can't forget the coaches! I've had some questions about Riley's guys this year, but now I see it's much like most years. These guys develop players and improve the team as the year goes forward. Langsdorf called a great game, Read had special teams playing well, and Banker had his guys do everything needed to beat a #9 team. Good job, coaches.
Individual honors go to the following players:
KATZ WAS AWESOME!
James Rogers was SUPER until injured.
Markus Wheaton was EXTREMELY impressive.
I truly love defense, but I cannot yet identify a standout player on 'D'. I did note a couple of excellent plays by Gabe Miller, but no player was totally dominant. My kudos then go to the overall effort of the OSU defense.
GREAT WIN BEAVS! Keep improving like this and you may win the conference.

Honestly, getting tired of the cheap shots on the team, especially the Rogers brothers. I want Riley to light it up with the officials. Look st AZ's Mike Stoopes and how antimated he gets. Well, Riley is going to need to step it up with the officials to protect his players.
The James Rogers touchdown was cheap. There is no reason whatsoever to tackle there. The Quizz Rogers 4th quarter helmet off tackles after the whistle are also cheap.
Yet Riley doesn't make this an issue. God Damn It, Riley better step it up. He takes all this and the team takes hits. This is just really ridiculous.

Cliff, I didnt hear Stephen Paea's name called once the entire game. I saw him on the sidelins a couples times but dont recall him on the field. Was the ankle bothering him that much that he was out or did Az's O-line just do their job?
ckirkpatrick says:

Both. There were times he dominated.

Something has to be done about the officiating-and it will take more from Riley.
He HAS been more involved with the officials, but last night was awful, and I have to agree our players obviously have been put at risk.

Then race out into the field if you have to. Wasn't Stoopes called last night for being on the field? I don't know for sure, but enough is enough. Riley needs to really light it up.

Mike Stoops comes across as a dick with all his ranting and raving on the sideline, but it sure seems like the squeaky wheel gets the grease from these refs. OSU got homered on every call that mattered, and I didn's see Mike Riley in anybody's face about. Stoops goes half way on the field for the smallest of things. Are the refs intimidated by ther guy or something?
Otherwise the Beavs were awesome last night, outside of our placekicking. Why in the world can't we find a consistent kicker, and what's wrong with Kahut? It's got to be mental.
Great game Katz, and pray James season isn't ruined by a cheapshot.

Kind of early but is there any talk on where James is having surgery if it is needed? I just hope if he needs it he goes to somewhere more cutting edge than the Corvallis Clinic.

Dude, leave the man be, somethings should be kept private like what doctors you are seeing and where. If he wants to share then fine. Btw, OSU has their own Docs man. Its not the facility that does the work, its the physician.

can someone post the photo of James' TD that go overturned? The one where his foot was close to the endline, but not clearly on the line. I heard that there is a photo that shows about a 1/4" between his foot and the endline. If so, this needs to be sent the Pac-10 offices and an explanation or apology should be issued.

Cliff,
McAndrews wore a number to be an eligible receiver. Any thought of bringing him in in place of Camp at TE is obvious run situations. He seems athletic enough to get downfield and block some LB's in the run game.
ckirkpatrick says:
May 18, 2012
That was for special teams yesterday. As for the future, probably not. He was probably Camp's back up on special teams. Camp will be back this week.

Won't have anything until tonight. Possibly on Monday.

Cliff, is Riley going to get engaged on the officials and the lack of calls resulting in cheap shot injuries?
Also, I note that a coach often is fined for bad-mouthing officials. What is the punishment if the players were to publicly bad mouth the lack of calls? Of course, fining them, as an amateur, will result in no funds to collect on. But if Riley is not going to stand up, maybe someone like Dockery can do it. He seems to have the support of the team lately.
It's time for something to give here. OSU may be doing great in a power ranking competition, but by the end of the year Riley won't have any players left if the non-calls on the cheap shots continue.

What will it take for Riley to get mad? OSU get homered it Corvallis, Boise and now Tucson….Beav players get hurt, like James and he does nothing. Coaches like Stoops and Kifffen are constantly yelling at the officials and are on the field, but never get flagged. Are to officials calling things against the Beavs knowing that Riley won't challenge them?
maffub says:
May 18, 2012
I saw Riley clearly angry on the sidelines. I don't know what more to expect. A guy can't change who he is and there comes a point where you're detracting from your coaching duties to yell at the officials. Ultimately, Larry Scott has to pull the stripes aside and say "look, that's an embarrassing performance… fix it, or lose your jobs".
WebTraveler says:
May 18, 2012
Ultimately Riley needs to get fired up….even take a penalty if he must to get something done. James Rodgers is probably done for his college career now that this has happened. Two weeks ago Boise State took a cheap hit on him and last night Arizona did it. ENOUGH. Play the game, not the man.

LOOK… I appreciate how ticked off you guys are. Hell, I was screaming at the TV screen in a public place after that play & the injury. But before you anoint Coaches Stoops & Kiffin as knowing proper protocol for gaining advantage with the officials ask yourself this question:
Would I prefer their body of work as football coaches to that of Mike Riley?
Also remember that Mike Riley has an explicitly DIFFERENT point of view of the football game than we as fans do. How many replays did we see of the injury? A dozen? How many different angles? At what range? Coach Riley doesn't get to see any of that… Do you think he'd have popped his cork if that play had occurred in clear view? Or if Burfict's head butt had been in front of the OSU bench? Hell yeah, he would have!!!
I'll say it again, I have seen him very angry on the sideline… this year and others. I DO NOT think M.R. needs to go old school Mike Stoops (37-40 career record) or new school Lane Kiffin (11-8 at two former powerhouse programs) to get more respect. You guys are reacting emotionally, and while I understand that… and empathize with it… it's not a good strategy.
ElJefe says:

Agreed! Do you *really* want Coach Riley to have the same reputation as Stoops?
JackBeav says:

While I disagree that he should have remained silent against the Boise Thugs (and I'm told he wasn't… though the cameras never showed differently), the plays we've seen since don't really warrant any great outburst from Riley. When I see Stoops doing some jawing at the refs 20 yards away from the sideline (on every play), I see the boy who cried wolf.
More egregious is the replay official's calls to overturn everything on the field except the one play that had overwhelming evidence to overturn. I've heard that Jim Fogletance was the replay official for our game. If that rumor is indeed true, then UA's AD should be sanctioned by the league office. Jay Stricherz is just a bad official who micromanages games so as to affect the outcome. Jim Fogletance is a demonstrated UA homer as an official who was bounced from the league for his actions.
If I was told he was the replay official before the game, I could have predicted each and every call with 100% certainty.

I see the play that hurt Rodgers the same as Riley does. It looks like the defender was trying to knock the ball loose on the goal line then got tangled with James. I see a lot of tackles like this, and the only reason this one was terrible was because someone was hurt.
Does anyone know the rule for illegal man downfield? The replay showed Bishop was only three yards downfield when the pass was thrown. Is it the line of scrimmage? Or is it five yards downfield?
The way our season has played out thus far, I think we will start catching some breaks we shouldn't… a make-up if you will. When the wolf finally appears, it will be good to have a coach who has remained silent thus far. The world will sit up and take notice the first (and presumably only) time Riley runs out on the field to scream at a ref. The next time Stoops does it, we'll know that UA's next game has begun.
