The Oregon State football team is known for being laid back in how it approaches everything. It’s part West Coast style and part the way the head coach carries himself.
However, senior CB James Dockery injected some seriousness to road trips. He wanted everyone in ties and dress shirts when traveling.
“My high school coach made us do that, and it made us look nice,” Dockery said. “People like to say road games are a business trip. Then we should dress like. When you dress like that it’s very easy to see you have a purpose.”
Teammates where lukewarm with the idea at first, mostly because they didn’t have all the pieces of the ensemble. OSU stepped in and helped make it part of the official travel uniform.
“I like it, but I was a little skeptical about it at first flying on the plane with a suit and tie but I think I like it now,” S Lance Mitchell said. “Dock being a business major he wants us to take it as a business trip. We got what we wanted out of it to be more focused.”
Mitchell noted the linemen weren’t fond of the idea because they sweat more than the rest of the team. He shared that DT Brennan Olander gets naked on the flight home.
That was an exaggeration about him taking the tie off, unbuttoning the shirt and going business casual Friday style.
The plan is do it for all Pac-10 Conference games, home and away.
Also, here’s a link to my main story in Wednesday’s GT about Cameron Collins and how he’s doing in his switch from safety to linebacker. Here’s a link to my notebook that leads off with coach Mike Riley and how he goes about voting in th coaches poll. Here’s another video clip interview that features DT Stephen Paea.

I like the business approach. Just wonder why it has to come from a player and not a coach, but better that than nothing I suppose. Dockery has stepped up and become a leader on D. Good to see.

I guess Olander doesn't get naked at some stranger's house at five in the morning. That's a step up.
Isn't it?
Good on Dock to go out and get respect rather than whine about not receiving any.

I love this Idea! It helps the team focus, helps bring more unity and cohesiveness to the team. I still want to see more fight from this team, and with the leadership that OSU has this year, I think we will see more and more fight from now on! Soldier on Beavers!

While I love the idea, I think we all know that a college students' business wear is rather limited. I'm picturing wrinkled khakis, hand-me-down blue blazer and hiking boots. I don't begrudge them but I think the team looks a little nicer when they are in school issued sweats compared to an ad hoc suit.

I saw some nice photos of James Doc and his family and friends after the ASU game. He looked great in his shirt and tie. By the time a guy is in college, he should be transitioning from the hand-me-down blazer and hiking boots into the professional person he plans to be.
Good on ya James Doc!
