The Oregon State football team has one more bye week practice today. The players have three days off while the coaches head out on the recruiting trail.
“That allows guys to travel home early after practice and come out Sunday,” coach Mike Riley said. “Coaches go recruiting and players have a break.”
Here’s the list of the 12 known verbal commitments so far. I’m surprised that there are four WRs, another TE and QB. The Beavers are loaded at those positions now. I’m sure they are thinking depth, but how about some DL.
Player, Pos., Ht/Wt, Hometown (School)
o Justin Addie, OL, 6-3, 285, Mesa, Ariz. (Skyline High)
o Peter Ashton, QB, 6-3, 185, Keller, Texas (Faith Christian High)
o Brandon Bennett, DE, 6-3, 250, Spring, Texas (Spring High)
o Kellen Clute, TE, 6-5, 226, Mead, Wash. (Mt. Spokane High)
o Kenzel Doe, WR, 5-8, 171, Oak Ridge, N.C. (Oak Ridge Academy)
o Chris Lampkins, WR, 6-2, 172, Oak Ridge, N.C. (Oak Ridge Academy)
o Richard Mullaney, WR, 6-2, 172, Thousand Oaks, Calif. (Thousand Oaks High)
o Jeremy Reynolds, CB, 5-9, 163, Oak Ridge, N.C. (Oak Ridge Academy)
o Connor Thomas, OL, 6-4, 260, Kalispell, Mont. (Flathead High)
o Storm Woods, RB, 5-11, 205, Pflugerville, Texas (Pflugerville High)
o Dylan Wynn, DE, 6-2, 234, Concord, Calif. (De La Salle High)
o Tyrequek Zimmerman, WR, 6-0, 186, Lawton, Okla. (Lawton High)
Expect at least 15 recruits, but probably around 20 since the Beavers usually over recruit. There are 18 seniors leaving with three greyshirts coming in the winter.
Here’s a link to my main story in Thursday’s GT. It’s the beginning of a season-long weekly series that looks at each position on the field and breaks down everyone’s role with the scheme, and answers what it’s like to be in that player’s shoes. This one starts with defensive tackle through the eyes of Stephen Paea.
Senior CB James Dockery will serve as a correspondent on Jim Rome is Burning this Friday at 1:30p m. on ESPN. On Dockery, here’s a link to the weekly oddball Q&A featuring him. As a preview, here’s his celebrity dream date.

USA Today ranked Corvallis the No. 7 college town in the nation.

Cliff,
Any words from Riely or Quizz about the comments made by ESPN broadcasters during the TCU game? It was about Quizz not taking hits during practice and not being game ready. They even showed him on the sideline looking "tired". Aside from the game, seems like that was not good for his campaign.
Thanks

I remember them saying that… I thought, "He doesn't look tired. He's just chillin' out on the bench, saving his energy for the next offensive series." Kinda dumb. Oh well.
Cliff – Any idea how to pronounce Tyrequek Z.'s name? It kind of looks like it should be "tire-kick," but I don't really know!

No, I thought I knew. When I talked to him he corrected me with an off-the-wall sound.

Quizz caught 78 passes last season. Had Katz looked in his direction even 4-6 times in the receiving game, his completion % would have gone from 36% to maybe 50% (considering that he would actually make the completion). How huge would those completions be in sustaining the few critical drives (like towards the end of the 1st half) the Beavs had? Aside from the defense, this is the single-biggest area that I thought the Beavs failed to capitalize on vs TCU. Canfield was simply outstanding in utilizing his outlet receiving option!

Didn't Jeremy Reynolds already de-commit in favor of Texas Tech? Beavers could have used this guy. They also need to do everything they can to find some LBs with lateral quickness and ones that can be taught not to over-pursue. Does Shaydon Akuna look like he'll turn into anything decent?

The other Oak Ridge player? Yes, he de-committed.

Here is what I came out of this game with
* Katz, for starting his first game, looked good. I love his leadership & arm strength. I hate that he only had 9 completions but we must remember that this was his first game against one of the best Defenses in the country AND it was on the road (dont give me that neutral site BS)
* Our linebackers looked SLLLOOOOWWWW. I love how Michael Doctor played but as a whole they need to pick it up big time.
* DE were non factor. This scares me bigtime. If we cant get to the quarterback then we are in trouble in a quarterback rich PAC 10.
I think this is a 7-5 team (6-3 PAC 10) maybe 8-4 (7-2) and either Holiday Bowl or Alamo Bowl

Quizz addressed the tired comments in a tweet: http://twitter.com/JQR1bgs/status/23198588305

What were his comments for us non-tweeters. (I know I should.)

3 days off? Guess they aren't trying to prep Cam Collins for Boise State.
Wow…that's all I can say.

Consider, AB, that OSU sets its schedule in advance so that players may have time to arrange travel? These are not professional athletes. Enabling a bye-week visit home is perfectly fine, regardless of situation.

I was going to comment about the verbal recruits. But, then I got distracted by the Beyonce picture! She make me lose my breath, lol!
