Spring practice heads into its final week for the Oregon State football team. There are workouts Monday and Wednesday afternoon and the spring game at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday.

QB Ryan Katz appears to have a strong hold on the starting job. We’ll see if he can keep it through training camp in August.

Cody Vaz is pushing Peter Lalich for the backup job. They’ve been splitting the second string reps the last week.

It appears Ryan McCants and Jovan Stevenson will share the backup RB job. McCants has run with authority but Stevenson remains the better pass catcher.

“I thought all of them had some good runs, again (Friday),” coach Mike Riley said after the latest scrimmage. “We are going to be a lot better shape with a guy or two or three behind Quizz.”

Nothing has been settled at OG. Tackle depth looks good in the wake of Michael Philipp missing most of the spring with a knee injury. Wilder McAndrews and Timi Oshinowo are solid.

“Wilder McAndrews has had a very good spring,” Riley said. “I’m glad he’s playing this long (and not hurt). Then Burke Ellis, Ryan Pohl, Michael Lamb and Colin Kelly have played well (at guard).”

Tony Wilson remains in the lead over Rueben Robinson for the MLB spot. And the overall defense has performed well.

“We played well, but there’s still a lot to work on,” CB Brandon Hardin said. “We have to solidify our coverages and run support, and make better tackles.”

Here’s a link to my Monday story in the GT. It catches up with the four greyshirts – LB Michael Doctor, OL Michael Beaton, WR Kevin Cummings and WR Obum Gwacham - and how they are doing.
