It has been busy week for Oregon State women’s sports. The women’s basketball teams problems have been well documented by the GT.
Now, here’s the newspapers take on the situation in a column in Sunday’s GT by sports editor Steve Gress. And he says it’s time to fire coach LaVonda Wagner.
Five years ago Judy Spoelstra was fired after four straight WNIT appearances with one 1-17 Pac-10 run. The feeling was she lost her fire and control of the program.
Wagner hasn’t had anywhere as much success and the mass exodus by players and coaches show a loss of control in a much worse way.
I pointed out that OSU does not have the money to pay out Wagner’s contract and hire another coach, so there’s at least another year of Wagner.
This is similar to what happened at the end of the Jay John era for men’s basketball. The Beavers had to wait a year longer than they wanted. The move has to be made at the right economic time.
Next season for the women won’t be pretty again no matter who the coach is.
Gymnastics update
Mandi Rodriguez, Laura-Ann Chong and Makayla Stambaugh were named all-Americans gymnasts on Saturday. Rodriguez finished third in the vault and Stambaugh took 12th on the floor at nationals.

This is the exact reason you don't extend Mike Riley through 2019.

Couldn't agree less. Riley's been here for the better part of a decade, during which time he has a proven track record of success both on and off the field. For lack of a better phrase, "he is who we thought he was." I could see if this was one or two seasons of success early in his tenure, but we're talking about a team that is consistently competitive. That competitiveness is all we as fans can ask for. Giving Coach Robinson an extension may have been a bit premature, and if you want to go that way with your anger, feel free.
