The NFL draft starts tonight with the made-for-TV first round going on at prime time. No former Oregon State football player will be selected that early.
QB Sean Canfield and LB Keaton Kristick are the top picks. Here’s a link to my story on them in Thursday’s edition that catches up with what they’ve been doing recently since March’s pro day.
Rounds 2-3 are Friday with 4-7 going Saturday. Canfield is projected in the late-middle rounds and Kristick is a late-rounder. So they’re names should be called Saturday.
There are a few free agent candidates with OG Gregg Peat, DE Ben Terry, WR Damola Andeniji and CB Tim Clark. Adeniji and Clark wouldn’t surprise me if they get drafted.
Clark had a good chance to be drafted if his leg wasn’t broken during the Civil War. Maybe he showed well to scouts in recent weeks to get a shot.
Adeniji’s size and hands would make it an interesting prospect. We’ll see if the scouts think he’s fast enough.
In the world of women’s sports, here’s a link to my Q&A with gymnastics coach Tanya Chaplin about here team going into nationals. Here’s a link to the advance story and preview box.

Here’s a link to AD Bob De Carolis’ statement about the state of women’s basketball. And just to let you know, OSU doesn’t have the money to buy out coach LaVonda Wagner out of the last three years on her contract. So, it’s at least another year.

I understand the financial situation is not good, but keeping LaVonda is not
a good option. I am not inclined to support a coach who is abusive towards
her student athletes. This mess is the result of Mr. DeCarolis extending
coaches contracts when there is not enough proof of success to make such
a decision reasonable. Will he never learn. I am afraid that LaVonda has
seriously damaged OSU recruiting in Oregon and surronding states for years
to come. A change is needed now, regardless of the financial hit.

Think of it this way. You have a car that doesn't run well, but you can't afford a new car. So you make due until you save enough.
To keep the analogy going, yes, you can put little down now but you can't afford the payments. OSU is running on the shoestring as it is to try and stay competitive in a bad economy.

They should ditch women's basketball. Very few people care about it and we need the money.
I can't believe Ben Terry is getting consideration as a free agent. Is that true??? Did he even have a college sack?

I don't think we can ditch the sport for two reasons. First, it is required to maintain division I status. Second, if we ditched a women's sports we would have to lose an equal amount of men's scholarships….
