We start the aftermath of Wednesday’s practice with the injury report.
TE Colby Prince suffered a hamstring injury. He ran a route and just went down. Prince needed help off the field. The severity will be known later.
OT Michael Philipp and DL Mitchel Hunt had knee surgeries around midday, and everything turned out as expected.
“It sounds good,” coach Mike Riley said of the procedures. “I got a doctor’s report in the middle of practice. Mitchel Hunt’s cleanup went well and Michael got the foreign particle removed from his knee. Hopefully, that solves the problem.”
LB Kevin Unga (hip-flexor) sat out practice. It has been an ongoing issue. “He still has that deal,” Riley said. “It has been a little frustrating.”
Outdoor life
The Beavers practice in Reser Stadium for the first time this spring since the rain decided to let up.
“It felt good to be outside,” Riley said. “We got a lot of stuff done. It was fun to see a punt. That was the first time in 2010 and everything looked OK.”
That last line was in reference to the miserable punting conditions at the Las Vegas Bowl, when punts went sideways and backward.
QB report
All the QBs were inconsistent again but did better in their 2-minute drill. The defense still had the upper hand. However, Ryan Katz stood out the most.
“Today Ryan and Peter (Lalich) both had some good moments,” Riley said. “I was pleased with Ryan’s 2-minute drill. He didn’t complete them all. The ones he missed, he put in good locations. I thought he managed that thing very well. The rest of practice was good for him. Pete made a bad decision and got one intercepted. It’s still a long-term process with them.”
Friday scrum
The previous blog listed the officiated practices (scrimmages) as April 16 and 23. However, there will be an unofficiated practice with the offense vs. defense. Riley called it a scrum.
“We are right on schedule,” Riley said when asked how overall practice has been going. “We’ll have a little scrum on Friday. That will let us know how we are doing. I’m impressed with the speed of the secondary. And our receiving corps is a good match for them.”
Even the long snappers got after it Wednesday.

had to create an account just to say this: every time i read or hear about the punting/kicking situation in the LV Bowl, i always cringe and think about BYU. they had to punt and kick, and the wind Did Not affect them. why? because they made changes and started punting line drives. the game killed me, but more so was the fact that we just didnt make the right changes. i couldnt believe that we were still punting high and not keeping it low. little things like that could very well have added to BYU's momentum swing.
ill be commenting a lot more now lol
