OL coach Mike Cavanaugh breaks in a new group.
Starting OT Michael Philipp injured a knee and didn’t finish practice Wednesday. Oregon State football coach Mike Riley called it a minor tweak.
“I don’t have a complete diagnosis, but I don’t think it’s anything serious,” Riley said. “That was the first indicator, and I hope that’s right.”
WR Darrell Catchings sat out practice due an eye irritation. He helped run drills with receivers coach Jay Locey.
“He could not function today,” Riley said. “He wears contact lenses, and with his irritation he could not play. He’ll be back, I hope, on Friday.”
The Watkins brothers, Anthony and Brian, made it back from their East Coast trip and were able to practice for the first time.
The offense went up against the defense for an extended time. All four of the QBs missed a handful of throws. Peter Lalich was smooth at times.
Ryan Katz threw so hard even WR James Rodgers had trouble catching the ball. Rodgers dropped three catchable balls, and couldn’t handle one off the chest. RB Jacquizz Rodgers had trouble dealing with the heat on the swing pass.
If Katz doesn’t win the QB job, I’m sure Pat Casey could use another big arm out of the bullpen.
“It was good,” Riley said of the overall workout. “We had some interaction. They played fast when they played. They reacted well. It’s plenty obvious we need a lot of playing like this for a lot of positions. Our quarterbacks need a ton of this this. Once we get into pads we’ll have a lot more of this.”
There were few times when the players starter to hit each other hard. And they only had helmets on. They put shoulder pads on Friday.
“I hesitate to do too much interaction when we are in shorts, but practices are long and guys get antsy,” Riley said. “We don’t run the ball, but they still tend to run into each other.”
Players are reporting general soreness from the first week of spring practice.
Former OG Jeremy Perry is hanging around practice to help out with the offensive line.
Special teams drills are a big part of the early portion of practice.

Cliff, where would you rank Lalich's arm strength? Obviously it's lesser than Katz but is it better Canfield?

Lalich throws a nice deep ball on streaks, corners and posts. The deep out hasn't been great. But neither has Katz. I think it's more on timing for both.
Canfield was smooth on the deep out. I think when Katz and Lalich get in sync both will have the physical tools.

Interesting info on timing and such, but I think the question asked remains unanswered… "where would you rank Lalich's arm strength… is it better than Canfield's"?
I'm interested to hear the answer, so I guess I'm re-asking beavfan05's question. How does Lalich's arm strength compare to Canfield's?
Stronger, not as strong, or roughly equal?

I'll say about the same. They look different, and makes it hard to judge so early in the deal.
Canfield had a smooth, long motion. That's why he looked slow at the times, but got the ball to all areas.
Lalich has a quick release – a good whip action. He can get the ball there, but hasn't been completing as many due to missing and WR not being there.
And Lalich made a comment Monday that he didn't think he had one of the strongest arms. Yes, compared to Katz, but it seemed odd to me.

I think it is great to see Perry out there on the field helping out the guys. I know he went through some stuff dealing with being the "man" on th o-line and being a great NFL prospect to not being able to play at all. Good to see him out there and helping out.

I agree on Perry. A lesser person could have very easily went into a tailspin. Good to hear he is staying active. Is his knee doing better? Does he still think he can get back to playing some day? I know you have your plate full but on a slow news day a Perry interview might not be a bad idea… just a suggestion though.
