Cliff: Practicing gymnastics (updated) Comments

Here’s a link to a story on the Oregon State gymnastics team and how it practices that ran in Tuesday’s GT. The idea came to me because every gymnast has leg injuries.

The nature of the sports sends them crashing down onto the floor. After a while joins break down and surgery is required.

It’s a dangerous sport, really. It’s only a matter of time until injury happens.

“I have bad knees, but you can’t think about the what-ifs out there,” senior Laura-Ann Chong said. “If you do, that’s when you get injured. You have to push past that. We talk about the insecurities if we have them. We focus on the positive things. If you don’t, then it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

Check out the videos of the Beavers practicing. Notice the bars done wit no landings. The beam folks don’t land hard until needed.

The story details how the Beavers try to stay safe and how keep everyone going meet-to-meet. And it gives a glimpse of what they do in the middle of the week.

“College is different from club because we are older and need to take care of our bodies,” Chong said.

Colvin honored
Junior Becky Colvin was named Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week winner Tuesday.

She set a career-high and won the individual vault title Sunday at Cal with a 9.925. She is tied for ninth in the nation on the vault with an average score of 9.875. Colvin also scored a career-best 9.85 on the floor exercise.

This is the first Special Performance honor of Colvin’s career and OSU’s eighth all-time Special Performance selection.
