It’s two days before letter-of-intent day, so it’s time to look at where the Oregon State football team sits with its recruiting.
The Beavers have 14 known verbal commitments and four greyshirts with 12 seniors departing and four off the team or not on scholarship for various reasons.
There could be a fifth greyshirt, but WR Reggie Dunn has fallen into the Simi Kuli category of will he make it academically or not? Chances are not, but we’ll find out soon.
Reports say K Trevor Romaine and DB Will Storey are going to greyshirt so the Beavers would be set with the numbers.
However, if a big name decides to come to OSU on signing day they’ll make room with another greyshirt. Plus there’s the chance some these guys don’t make it academically, too.
So here’s the breakdown of commitments.
Name, Pos, Ht/Wt, Rivals.com stars
- Michael Bibbee, LB, 6-3/225, ***
- Scott Crichton, DE, 6-5/224, ***
- Dominic Glover, DE, 6-4/275, ***
- Happy Iona, DT, 6-3/283, ****
- Sean Manion, QB, 6-5/205, ****
- Malcolm Marable, RB, 5-8/170, ***
- Thomas Molesi, DT, 6-2/280, ****
- Ryan Murphy, DB, 6-2/190, ***
- Tyler Perry, TE, 6-5/240, ***
- Trevor Romaine, K,6-0/185, ***
- Roman Sapolu, OL, 6-2/250, ***
- Will Storey, DB, 6-2/212, **
- Fred Thompson, DT, 6-4/290, ***
- Donell Welch, LB, 6-2/205, ***
The Beavers went out of their way to rebuild the defensive line. They did that with three DTs and two DEs. The key is Glover, a JC transfer, because he’s physically more mature and can contribute sooner.
The Beavers have gone away from JC recruits, preferring to develop athletes over five years. DL is the one area they make exceptions for. Schemes are simple and sometimes they need a quick reload, such as now.
All the other recruits replenish the depth everywhere else. So there’s no reason to see any of these guys on a regular basis, except for Glover, for at least two years. And Romaine, who should be the kicker in 2011.
So what is the opinion on the class? Rivals.com ranked OSU’s class No. 47 in the country. The average star rating for the players is 3.14 stars. The Beavers are in their regular spot in the Pac-10 of ninth place.
No. 11 USC, No. 13 UCLA, No. 14 Oregon, No. 19 Stanford, No. 23 California, No. 32 Washington No. 35 Arizona State and No. 39 Arizona are ranked ahead. Only No. 85 Washington State is behind them.

What are the rules for grayshirts? If they don't enroll for fall term, are they free agents or are they bound to the school for a certain time after signing?

Any student-athlete who signs a NLI is bound to that institution for one full year, unless they are a non-qualifier or the school grants them a release.

They can go elsewhere.

What is the deal with Owamagbe Odighizuwa? The souting sites have his final choices as Nebraska, Oregon State and UCLA. If we get lucky enough and land him that will make three DE's. And good ones at that. But what are the chances of Riley landing a five-star? And i hear that Giovanna Bernard is down to UNC and OSU but is leaning towards the TarHeels. Have you heard anything else on that?

Bernard committed to N. Carolina.
Odighizuwa said he'll let it be known on signing day. Basically it's a big-name (Neb), big city (UCLA) or close to home (OSU) for him.

damn, UNC? Well best of luck there. He probably saw the playing time issue. Here he''d have to wait until Quizz was gone. And we are getiing that Marable dude. He looks like he could be decent. But he is a bit small, but we said that about quizz too…

Gio could have redshirted here and been a RS Freshman when Quizz was a senior, probably getting 5-10 touches a game. Marable would likely be a career back-up to Gio. Gio probably didn't want to be in his brothers shadow, at UNC he can make his own name.

Cliff,
Do you see ways we could improve our recruiting to rank higher? Not enough glamour/glitz at OSU I suppose for many recruits. How come alumni like Nick Barnett, Dawn Edwards, etc., don't do more for the beavers. Even if they just talked more about how the beavers developed them. Riley should really push the #1 family friendly title with more parents.

The direct answer is get higher ranked players. To do that, OSU has to move to Portland (the big city) so 18-year-olds feel more comfortable. Then you have to change the weather so it's sunny.
Behind the scenes, Riley has to be less family and promise cater to the whim of every five-star athlete and make sure it's all about that individual. Spoil them rotten.
I say that being funny, but it's what five stars expect.

Cliff, the Ducks just dismissed Embry, the other half of the Thievery Incorporated (the other one being Masoli). The offiical reason was "violation of team rules." I am assuming that this has to do with the theft of the laptops. Well since, allegedly, the other guy was Masoli, do you think the Ducks will dismiss him also? Probably not. Embry is expendable not Masoli. I am so glad that Riley and OSU are the complete opposite of our neighbors down south. Keep it classy Eugene.

According to the Oregonian, Embry was dismissed from the team on Jan. 8 which is 2 weeks before the alledged theft. Also there is some interesting information on the Rob Beard assault in that the attacker who has been caught by the police may have also been a high school teammate of the fraternity person making the theft accusation. Seems kind of fishy doesn't it.
