Cliff: Impressive wrestling, fball notes Comments
No. 16 Kelly Kubec, left, won his match 7-0 over CJ Napier.
The No. 22 Oregon State wrestling team defeated Nebraska 32-7 in an intense showdown Sunday afternoon in Gill Coliseum. The Beavers (15-1) have won 14 straight.
There were several hard-fought matches that will be highlighted in my my Monday story in the GT. Here’s a link to that story.
The big match was at 174 pounds when No. 11 Colby Covington upset No. 3 Stephen Dwyer 2-1. Then No. 14 heavyweight Clayton Jack pinned No 10 Tucker Lane out of nowhere a second before time ran out.
“He thought he had the win, I’m sure,” Jack said. “He got relaxed and I capitalized on it.”
“I like what we did,” coach Jim Zalesky said. “I thought we won some tough matches.”
Covington is on fire. He’s 30-5 with 14 pins and won the last seven matches.
“It’s a big motivation,” Covington said of his victory. “It’s a big boost moving into the end of the year. It’s a good feeling.”
There’s a rivalry between him and Dwyer. Covington was obsessed with beating him after losing in overtime to him two years ago. They exchanged some words after the match.
“There was a little talk,” Covington said. “He said I’ll see you in March (for the national tournament). He said some things and gave me a cheap shot. But that’s OK. That’s tough wrestling. Wrestling is tough.”
Jack’s victory came off a loss last week when his surgically repaired knee acted up.
“It felt better than last week,” Jack said. “I should have won last week. As my knee gets better, I’ll start wrestling better. It’s more of mental thing. I don’t want to make it worse.”
And I guilted wrestling fans enough for a good turnout. There were 1,795 fans for the final dual of the season.
The Beavers have five more duals on the road. Four of them are Pac-10 meets as they chase the regular season Pac-10 title. Then it’s on to the postseason.
Football notes
Former Beavers OL Kyle DeVan is headed to the Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts.
OSU incoming recruit DB Will Storey of Lake Oswego High told Rivals.com that plan for him is to greyshirt.
There are some problems for the Ducks here. And then it gets worse here, with QB Jeremiah Masoli one of the suspects.
