The Oregon State football team had a big weekend in terms of campus visits, and then received two verbal commitments Sunday, according to Rivals.com.
They came from DT Fred Thompson and teammate DB Ryan Murphy from Oakland Tech from the Bay Area.
Thompson is a 6-foot-4, 290-pounder. He’s ranked as a three-star athlete and No. 70 in the nation at his position. He’s considered a top D-lineman from Northern California.
Thompson is the third DT to commit in the class. Replenishing the DL was something the Beavers wanted to address this year.
Murphy is a 6-2, 190-pounder with 4.42-second speed in the 40. He’s not ranked by recruiting services. Murphy played RB, too.
The Beavers have 13 known commitments for the 2010 class. Signing day is Feb. 3.

Good stuff, Cliff! Looks like the Beavs have addressed their DL very adequately. I like Happy Iona, Thomas Molesi and now F. Thompson. Hopefully all will develop in the same capacity that a Brennan Olander and Paea have done. However, I have a big concern with lack of DE and RB commits, to date. If Owa out of Portland commits I think the Beavs have the making of a stellar class. As for RB's Beavs have McCants and Stevenson but neither proved to be a reliable backup to Quizz this year. Should this be a concern?

Owa has cut OSU from his list. I also read somewhere that DTs Buckley and possibly Iona might not academically qualify. Molesi is going to pay 1 year at OSU then he's going off to a 2 year LDS mission.

Ted – Do you have a link to provide on the Owa decision? Too bad about Buckley and now that Iona may not qualify that doesn’t help. Also, a surprise that one of the elite TE in Christian Thomas paid the Beavs a visit. Any insight as to how his visit went? Thanks for the info.

The DE deal is interesting. Unless he's a JC guy he most likely won't make an impact 2011 or 2012. So hope for some development from the DEs in the offseason.
As for RBs, it's pretty solid. After Quizz, Stevenson was a reliable backup. He got yards every time he went in. I expect he can get more time next season. He'll be a true sophomore.
McCants, he was coming back from the knee injury. That really takes a full year. He'll be better next season. If Quizz went down for an extended time, both of them could carry the ball for a season.
OSU has an RB comit for this season. He'll be develoed for a year. It would have been better if Ashton Jefferson didn't get removed from the team. Then there would have been very good depth.

The issues I saw this year with McCants had nothing to do with his knee and everything to do with his ability to hold onto the football. I agree that Stevenson is the real deal.

Thompson has a NFL body if those stats are anywhere close to reality. Hopefully the guy can become a game changer. Nice to see some solid DT prospects landing with the Beavs. Good play starts with winning the battle of the trenches.
