Oregon State football coach Mike Riley cleared the air about his status Sunday night. He signed a new contract with OSU through 2019. Terms will be disclosed later.
One item is still in the contract. For every bowl game apperance, a year is added. The goal is to make this a lifetime contract.
Here’s a link to my story in Monday’s GT with more specifics. And here’s a link to my Sunday story on OSU’s offseason plans. It holds a little more water now that Riley will be around to follow up on those plans.
So what do you think? A good move by AD Bob De Carolis, or a bad one?
I think it was a good move to secure Riley with the only thing that De Carolis could beat USC with, a long-term committment. OSU knows what it gets with Riley, and most people like what he has to offer. And that De Carolis moved quickly on this was very smart.

One term is that it won't include the clause that adds another year when ever he makes a bowl game.

Does it include any money for assistants? Doesn't seem like Riley would demand more money for himself because of the USC job, but maybe make life better for his assistants.
Also if any of them leave (I foresee Langsdorf as a HC at a BCS school(probably in the WAC) in 4 yrs or so), he can still afford quality assistants to come in.

Terms will come out soon, and I'll have that info in a bit.

Great move by DeCarolis. I like that he moved quickly on this, it was the smart thing to do. I just hope that Bob stays for a while too. He knows the situation with OSU (financially) and he masterfully knows how to deal with it. He has been able to hold on to two of the top coaches in their sport (Casey & Riley) at a cash strapped university and brought in Coach Rob. Kudos to Bob. Go Beavers

Here in a few years, it would be good to try and get somthing in his or Langsdorfs contract that states Langsdorf is the HC in waiting….

Why? Who says Lansdorf is head coaching material? I am not sure we're willing to worry about Riley's successor just yet.

Well, I think that one day Langsdorf would be a great head coach. He has a fantastic resume and has had success pretty much every stop. He has coached in the NCAA, NFL and in the CFL. He has run the OSU offense for the past few years and has also been the qb coach making winners out of Matt Moore, Sean Canfield and Lyle Moevoe. He has helped develop talent like Yveenson, James and Quizz Rodgers, Mike Hass and Sammie Stroughter. Every year the Beavers offense puts up great numbers and he is the man that calls the shots. Riley has final say, but he pretty much has turned over the reins to Langsdorf. He is well rounded too. He isnt limited to just coaching qb's he has been a special teams coach, wr coach, quality control and has worked with the TE's. In the CFL he was an offensive coordinator. That is at the pro level. All of this and he is only 37 years old. Riley knows a good coach when he sees one and he has found one in Langsdorf. When Riley is at the ripe old age of 66 and Langs is 47, I think he would be a great HC coach for OSU if he isnt one somewhere else already.

This is a huge no-brainer. We won't get a better coach to Corvallis… and the fact that he's willing to take millions less to be a part of our community is simply HUGE. When Riley finally retires (let's hope it's like 20 years from now) it will take a miracle to get someone who wants to earn less money, work with lesser facilities and with all of the other recruiting deficiencies. Until we get a billion dollar sugar-daddy like other schools have, we'll be at a huge disadvantage in almost every way.
Don't get me wrong… it's a good school and a nice place to live, but life in most of the rest of the Pac 10 (other than Pullman) is much, much more glamorous. We are extremely lucky to have Riley & company so loyal and committed.

Not that I think any of us need to be concerning ourselves with succession planning right now…by the way I think the HC in waiting thing is a poor approach…but my instant thought for replacement if Riley did leave was Jay Locey. Great success as a head coach, brought much of the "family approach" to OSU and would likely be able to put together a strong staff. But fortunately we don't have to worry about any of that. Would love nothing more than to see Riley reward Beaver Nation with a huge season next year and for Beaver Nation to pack Reser to the rim from Game 1.

Locey would be a good choice too. I am glad we dont have to worry about it for a while too. I like how things are going with Riley and look foward to him continuing with what he has started.

I don't like the move. Riley wasn't going anywhere because he wants to be in Corvallis, so why give him more? Complacency is a bad thing and it could set in with 9 years guaranteed.
