Oregon State coach Mike Riley caught up with the beat writers and talked about all sorts of things related to the program Sunday night. The following are the main points. More will follow in the week.
The greyshirts enrolling Monday are LB Michael Doctor, WR Kevin Cummings, Obum Gwacham.
DE Josh Kaiwi will attend a JC due to his academic issues.
WR Reggie Dunn and OL Michael Beaton should be around in the spring.
After continually saying he’s coming back next season, junior DT Stephen Paea is sending in paperwork to the NFL to test his potential draft status in April. He should get something back by the end of January and then make a decision to return to OSU or not.
The coaching staff is expected to remain together, but there was a scare.
There could be offseason surgeries, or at least extensive rehab, for S Anthony Watkins (shoulder) and S Lance Mitchell (hamstring) due to their lingering injuries.
Recruiting kicks into gear this week. There are 10 offers out, and Riley doesn’t expect to get them all since the class in about full.
There are 10 known commitments reported through various media outlets and the recruiting services and five greyshirts. There are 12 departing seniors and two more scholarships left by the Krebs brothers for 14 openings.
However, that’s a fluid number. Three more potential scholarship openings could happen with a player who has had long-term medical issues. Two others would be players getting in trouble on the bowl trip.
I asked Riley if it’s RB Ashton Jefferson because I’ve heard strange rumors. Riley wouldn’t confirm but said the perpetrators are out of the freshman class.
The last Riley heard, the Krebs brothers plan to transfer to California.

Nice to hear Wilder McAndrews will no longer be taking up a scholie. I don't think he's played a single down.
Krebs to California? That is surprising. Why would they want the Krebs?

Where does it say that?

I mean that McAndrews won't be on scholarship.

It doesn't say that. But that's a good guess.

They are probably walking on to be closer to home. One live in SoCal before coming here. Family must be there.

It would really be too bad if we lose Stephen Paea. Any talk of Lyle Moevao and his petition for an additional year?
ckirkpatrick says:

Lyle is still trying, but it's one in a million.

Cliff,
What kind of hit would it be if Paea left? I know the obvious answer but want to know what you think..
Also, OOC conference, geesh…

Your nonconference fears should be realized today.
Paea is a big loss. He's a very good athlete. The only thing that doesn't make it worse is he's a DT. The goal of that position is to take up blockers for the LBs and DEs. He does that well. Anything he officially does on the stat sheet is gravy. And he adds a lot of gravy.

What about Catchings? IS there any update about the likelyness he'll get a medical redshirt?
jefframp says:
Jan 4, 2010
Catchings used a regualr redshirt this year. You have to use that up first before a medical redshirt comes into play.
ckirkpatrick says:

Catchings has a good chance to ge a medical redshirt. He played this season so he can't use the regular redshirt. OSU beleives it has enough medical documentation to say an ankle spring couldn't heal in four months.
Medical redshirts can happen whenever a player who hasn't used a regular redshirt lose most of the seaosn due to injury.
A sixth year comes into play after a redshirt has been used but two full seasons were lost due to injury.

losing Paea would be huge. Dont like it or even the thought of it.
I do like that Doctor will be coming though. He looks good, real good. At least on tape…

Isnt the deadline to declare for underclassmen next week? I heard it was the 15th or so of Jan. Wouldn't it be too late for Paea to enter in late Jan?
ckirkpatrick says:
Jan 5, 2010
The deadline is in the middle of Jan. I heard he would figure it out by the end of January, so I guess that's right with mid-Jan. deadline.
PorcupineBeaver says:

The deadline to declare for the draft as an underclassman is the 15th of January, and the deadline to withdraw if you change your mind is the 18th of January.
That being the case, I'm not sure why you keep talking about the end of the January as the time when he'll "make a decision"/"figure it out".
With a mid-Jan. deadline, it's not really an option to wait until the end of the month.
