Cliff: Monday football reading Comments

There are two stories in the GT over the weekend of interest on the Oregon State football program.

The first one here, ran in Sunday’s edition. It’s on how the eight true freshmen did this season and if it was worth playing them or not.

The second one here, ran in Monday’s edition. It’s on coach Mike Riley reflecting on his work with the Beavers.

The following are some Riley comments that didn’t fit into Monday’s story but were interesting.

This part is on the chances of him leaving for another team, or jumping to the NFL like he did in 1999.

“I learned that the hard way,” Riley said. “After going on missionary work for a few years and getting to come back, I have a new motto. If you are happy, stay happy. I’m very thankful for Oregon State to give me that opportunity to come back again. We’ve found the green grass is right outside our office on Tommy Prothro field.”

Here is what he wants for himself at OSU:
“There are two important factors in a program,” Riley said. “One is time. We’ve been blessed with that. That’s a key factor in doing what we do. The other is having continuity of people. I consider myself and staff as one group. That’s a major, major factor.”

Riley on his recruiting:
“Evaluating the right players to Corvallis, you do that better in time. That’s a major factor in our program. We have a lot of good things at Oregon State. I want parents to know that this is a very good place for young men to grow. That’s our theme and what I want in the long-run. If we get that word out, we’ll get the right guy here.”
