Cliff: Quizz for Heisman, notes Comments

I was asked yesterday by GT newsroom folks about the hype for Oregon State RB Jacquizz Rodgers for the Heisman Trophy. My sports editor and I laughed.
Not that Rodgers isn’t having a good season but about the hype had started. Apparently Oregon AP wrote something that ESPN Pac-10 blogger Ted Miller wrote, saying to the effect that Rodgers is having a good year and should be considered.
It was a good topic of Miller because he was trying to make the readers think outside the box, but that’s not enough the get voters across the country to put Rodgers on the radar.
Granted, the Heisman race seems a little more open than in recent years but Rodgers will have a hard time getting enough national attention.
The problem for this year the Beavers are 4-3. Heisman winners come from teams in the running for BCS games, if not the national title race.
Plus, Rodgers is only ranked 10th in the nation in rushing, and second in the Pac-10 to Stanford’s Toby Gerhart. There have been three games where he didn’t even top 100 yards.
He’s 14th in all-purpose yards, well behind his teammate and brother James Rodgers in seventh. Co-worker Kevin Hampton said QB Sean Canfield is the top Heisman candidate in the Pac-10.
I asked OSU SID Steve Fenk if he had a Heisman campaign ready, and he said no. He cited the the same reasons for not doing one as I, but he said maybe next year if the Beavers get off to a fast start.
