The Oregon State football team’s homecoming game on Oct. 31 against UCLA will begin 1 p.m. with no television coverage, OSU announced. There’s a slight possibility that it could be taped for a later broadcast. This will snap a streak of 25 straight live televised games for the Beavers.
The Beavers had an opportunity to get the game on television in the 3:30-4 p.m. slot, but that decision may have come next week. And even then they might not like that idea. They decided to set an early afternoon game for the fans and the community.
It’s Halloween, the second biggest children holiday of the year, so a later kickoff would hurt the live crowd. Those with children might not make the game. A game on Halloween also hurts the local communities, taking people away from the many festivities going on.
And, of course it’s homecoming. Groups all around campus have been waiting to set their schedules around the game.
Since the Beavers have been doing well getting on TV, getting the money from being broadcast, they are in position to give up a TV broadcast.

Wait….so the Athletic Department would rather lose thousands of dollars in money, TV exposure to future recruits, and the ability for fans outside of the Corvallis area to watch the game…..just so families who have kids can go trick or treating?
This might be the craziest reasoning I have ever heard. For a department who says they are lacking for money and need more exposure as they try and rise to the elite half of the Pac-10….this makes no sense.

Yeah this doesn't sit well after Bob D was begging fans for money last week.

For the past couple of seasons, the #1 priority for scheduling gametimes was around TV. For once, the fans in attendance are getting consideration. I'm going to be at the game and was hoping for a 1pm start time. I was getting annoyed by the lack of a decision.
If you can't be at the game, enjoy Mike Parker on Beaver Sports. The Beavers used to offer online broadcasts for games like this. Is this still around?
DeCarolis is waffling. He would like the money from TV, but he wants to sell out Reser. He'll have a hard time filling the stadium while games are available on TV. Clearly UCLA has lost some appeal for TV
I doubt that OSU benefits much in the recruiting dept. from being on regional TV (FSN). The USC game will be big (game on ABC and being played in So. Cal) – hoping for a good game.

The issue is OSU trying to do what it can for the fans. It weighted money vs. fans being happy. Halloween is a tough day to have a game for a family-friendly type of entertainment.
Anyone who doesn't see that never had children or where never married. And the majority of the big-money (heck all levels) paying fans are dudes with families.
OSU's fan base is far flung, compared to those in a big city so there's this long travel time around games. And throw in homecoming, people want to start making plans. OSU has an issue with the homecoming time each week due to the 1-2 weeks notice of kickoff.
When it comes kickoff times, I've learned no one is happy. I would have liked a 9 or 10 a.m. kickoff.
On a serious note, Bob De Carolis pointed out in my interview with him last week that the Beavers are in good shape in the short term. They are getting a lot of TV money this year that they didn't budget for so they should be good.
What De Carolis wants is fans to give the program a lot of money so it can be healthy and thrive in the long-term with more building of facilities, pay for coaches and people making things work better.

Those that are upset that the game will not be on TV should buy a ticket to the game! There will likely be several thousand seats to choose from……

Even a 1pm start conflicts with the kids if they go "trick or treating" and you live in Portland. We won't be attending because the kids are more important. I understand the scheduling thing on Halloween. But the problem is what do you about it? Pretty much what is being done, I guess. I would have liked to see a Friday night game instead, but I doubt that would have worked too well. There is not much you can do.
Cliff, any hope of Fox College Sports picking the game up? A few weeks back the Huskies were in the same situation with their Stanford game. it conflicted with every TV window. Somehow magically Fox College Sports broadcasted it instead, at least to those that had access to the channel.

If UCLA and UW won on Sat, I would like to think we would have been selected for the 1230 ABC kickoff.
So is it at all a possibility the game moves to the 330 start? I assume that might require a win this weekend…….

Since OSU scrapped the TV thing for this game, it should have made it a 10 or 11 a.m. game. That way, it's over by 3 p.m. or so. Portland folks, even with traffic, would be back by 5 p.m. or so. However, that would impact homecoming stuff, too. Thus the double whammy this year.
Fox College Sports doesn't work with OSU. I don't know about UW's situation. As for a one-time deal, I have idea if that's being talked about. I doubt it.
Friday games? That hurts high school football, and then every Saturday game across the country would want to move and there would be no Saturday football, other than big TV games.
It's just one year, and OSU tried to accommodate the majority of the people. Whatever it did, many people would be upset.

1. The time will not change. OSU said no to TV so it can have an early afternoon game.
2. The game will might be taped by FSN and shown later.
3. There's no way the game would have been moved to Thursday or Friday because that forces a short week to prepare for the game. Mike Riley doesn't like it, and Bob De Carolis agrees.

The bummer is for out of state fans who dont have the option of going to the game or listening on the radio (except for online streaming).
I recently moved to the bay area so I am out of luck. I am surprised that UCLA wouldnt want it televised either though.

So now the university is missing out on money from the tickets not sold for the game AND the TV money…I wouldn't think that sits well with anyone who has stepped up and increased their donations after DeCarolis asked alumni to support the program financially.

If OSU's web site streams it, they'll let you know. That happens only if there's a telecast available. I think they did that at Arizona when FSN Arizona was doing the game locally, only.
The visiting team doesn't set the time of the game. UCLA probably wants the game on TV, but it's not its call when on the road.
The time of the game wants is for the fans and community. They are the donors. So, I'm guess many – not all of course – are OK with it. They are alumni doing homecoming things and celebrating the holiday for their children and watching a game.

Please don't call Halloween a holiday, some state employee is going to see that and demand a paid day off.

That's the best post I've read in awhile.
I think the TV infatuation does have its drawbacks. I know I'm much less likely to go to a game if I can stay at home with my family and watch it in HD. From a business standpoint, I would understand if non-sellouts were blacked out in the Willamette Valley.
Before you think I'm crazy, remember I said from a business standpoint. Looking at the matter personally… I'd be p!$$ed!
