Cliff: Pac-10 rankings Comments
It was a slow week for the Pacific-10 Conference in terms of who played with three teams on byes – Oregon State, Oregon and Washington State.
However, there were some interesting results that caused major movement in my rankings. The Beavers even moved up by default.
1. Oregon: The Ducks needed their week off to rest. The break shouldn’t hurt their momentum as they head to Washington next. The Oct. 31 USC home contest is the next game of the year.
2. USC: Survived a scare at Notre Dame. The Beavers may be catching them at the right time this week. The Trojans could be worn out from a physical and emotion altercation.
3: Arizona: The Wildcats and Stanford were at a crossroads going into the last game, and the Wildcats won. They are in good position for a bowl game, but have the tough teams up next.
4: Oregon State: Rested for USC. That’s good for the injured players, and coach Mike Riley knows how to prepare and motivate with extra time. It’s still a long shot, but the Beavers will be competitive.
5: Washington: Another tough loss for the Huskies. That happens to teams rebuilding. However, doing as well as they have been means they are not that far away.
6: California: The Bears are starting to dig themselves out of the two straight losses to begin the conference season. That should continue with Washington State next.
7. Arizona State: Very impressive win over the Washington this past weekend. That was a different team than when the Beavers beat them. A bowl game looks plausible if the Sun Devils keep playing like that.
8. Stanford: The promising start has slowed with two straight losses. Two more wins are needed for a bowl game, but the schedule is grueling with Arizona State, Oregon, USC, Cal and Notre Dame.
9. UCLA: Three straight losses put the Bruins at .500 at midseason. This was the team that we expected, not the one that went 3-0 with a win at Tennessee early in the year.
10. Washington State: This team really needed its bye. It’s a time to catch their breath and just work on trying to get better.
