Here’s a link to the my Friday GT story on the Oregon State football team’s latest verbal, PK Trevor Romaine from Corona, Calif.

The Beavers hit their original eight scholarship target for the 2010 class, not including the greyshirts, but if some interesting athletes become available they’ll take them and use the greyshirt deal.

Plus OSU has over recruited to cover the usual few players leaving the program for whatever reason.

Here’s a list of the other players the Beavers have committed:

LB Michael Bibbee, 6-3, 225 (North Eugene High)
DT Happy Iona, 6-3, 283 (Spanaway, Wash.)
QB Sean Mannion, 6-5, 205 (Pleasanton, Calif.)
RB Malcolm Marable, 5-8, 170 (Mission Hills, Calif.)
DT Thomas Molesi, 6-2, 280 (Oceanside, Calif.)
TE Tyler Perry,6-5, 240 (Ventura, Calif.)
OL Roman Sapolu 6-2, 250 (Huntington Beach, Calif.)

The greyshirts still expected in January or April are WR Reggie Dunn, LB Michael Doctor, OL Michael Beaton, WR Kevin Cummings, WR Obum Gwacham and DE Josh Kaiwi.

Before you ask about Dunn, he’s working on his grades through the term so we won’t know for sure if he makes it in until the end of the year.

That gives OSU 13 new players to replace the 12 seniors. It was 13, but senior TE John Reese decided to redshirt this season so he can come back next year.

The Beavers wanted to pick up players in various areas with no specific area to concentrate on with this class. It looks like they did what they wanted.

This is the second class with players of the future. The Beavers don’t need any of their recruits to save them. That’s a good sign that the program has been established.

These guys can ease into the program and be prepared to make an impact in two years or so. The exception, of course, is Dunn.

I notice you don't have any kind of star rating listed for these players. Which I think is fine, I think too much is usually placed on ratings and has to do more with what camps the players are able to attend during summers. What are your thoughts on star ratings and why they don't seem to matter Coach Riley and his crew?

I don't know anything about this player, but his numbers are excellent. I understand why we want kickers to walk on, but I think you need to extend some scholarships to improve special teams. Our kickoffs simply aren't getting deep enough this year and because of it opposing offenses are starting with pretty good field position. Our coverage has been excellent which somewhat curbs the problem, but obviously the ideal is both deep kickoffs combined with excellent coverage. Really like this move if the kid is as good as his numbers.

  I disagree. I don't see Kahut hitting many touchbacks, but I see him hanging the ball up high enough that the return man is often contacted before crossing the 20.
  
  The Beavs haven't given up a long return since the UNLV game, and that is nothing but positive.

What happened to LB Michael Doctor? Is he not expected to arrive anymore? Also there is OL Mau Nomani who should be coming back next year from his LDS mission.

Also Molesi might not be coming next year because of a LDS mission so that would allow for another commit to happen and there'd still be no greyshirting.

I added Michael Doctor. I looked at my original greyshirt list, and forgot to add him. He's working grades, too. He should be at OSU in the winter or spring. Thanks for remembering.

Nomani should be on his way back soon. If he wants to play, the scholarship will be there for him.

OSU keeps three scholarship for specialists – K, P and LS. P and LS are set for two more seasons after this. Kahut will be a senior next year, so I'm guessing that the new kicker my greyshirt. I don't know that for sure.

As for star ratings, a coach who uses that as a guide is not a good coach. Riley looks for good athletes, finds out about them as people and students. He goes after the best and gets what he can.

He also projects. He figures they'll mature into athletes and people in their time. He's like a baseball scout looking for prospects.

Many of the five-star guys are on his list, but they don't come to OSU because it's not a big-name program, middle of nowhere, bad grades, bad guys, don't mesh with the coaches, the players or many other reasons.

Craig Robinson pointed out to me last year something people don't like to say about athletes. The better the athlete, the more likely they are bad people and bad academically. Riley doesn't like bad people or bad students, so the five-star guys don't typically fit in.

  Cliff the UCLA game is a couple weeks away, what time will the game start and on what tv station will it be on. I have to know so the wife doesnt make plans druing the game! Thanks…

    The UCLA time will be know Monday. OSU wants a 12:30 start due to homecoming and halloween. It asked TV to do that for them, but TV doesn't care about that.

I think Michael Doctor looks like anothe Derrick Doggett on film. I was checking out some video on him a while back and it just reminds me of Doggs, a lot. I cant wait for him to get in and get out there on the field.
