Cliff: Stanford game/pregame thread Comments

It’s all quiet on the Oregon State football team front. There has been a steady build toward the Stanford game.

I’m being honest when I say the 2009 Beavers are hard to read. They are just cool, calm and collected.

So, I’m eager to see them play today. I picked the Beavers to win this game in the GT’s Game Day section. I’m usually pretty good about this, but I didn’t get the last two games.

There should be a good crowd. There were about 3,300 tickets left at the beginning of the day.

First quarter
Beavers show trickery with a shift on the kickoff to confuse Stanford’s return team. It worked.

Then they get big-time lucky on dropped pass off play-action with the safeties were sucked in. It should have been an easy TD. Defense holds.

Beavers debut the Wildcat with a 61-yard run by Jacquizz Rodgers. It was the longest run of his career. Then he ends the drive with a 7-yard TD run. OSU 7, Stanford 0 with 10:11 left.

And the Beavers run wild. Defense gets a stop and Quizz punches in another TD, this time form 12 yards out. OSU 14, Stanford 0, 2:00.

Second quarter
And it’s more of the same. Defense holds in the first and a long drive later and the Beavers score again. Quizz scored his third TD, this time on a 2-yard sweep. Beavers 21, Stanford 0, 9:56.

That drive was 14 plays. It ties for the longest of the season. The first one was against Arizona.

Stanford puts together a nice scoring drive, mixing the pass and run. QB Andrew Luck finally settles down. Beavers 21, Stanford 7, 7:14.

Now James Rodgers gets in the act. He caught a 16-yard TD pass from Sean Canfield. Beavers up 28-7 with 4:32 left in the game. That drive was a great change of approach. After steady running the Beavers went to the pass and it worked. Everything is working for the offense.

A 31-yard FG by Justin Kahut ends the first half. Beavers lead 31-7. That’s the biggest first-half output of the season.

Third quarter
Beavers punt for the first time, after scoring on all five drives of the first half.

Stanford completes another good drive. When the Cardinal passes the ball, it does well. OSU 31, Stanford 14, 7:04

OG Gregg Peat goes down with what appears to be a left knee injury with six minutes left in the third quarter. Burke Ellis replaces him. Peat returns at the end of the quarter.

Fourth quarter
And Quizz puts the nail in the coffin on the first play with a 5-yard TD run. Beavers go up 38-14 with 14:54 in the game. His fourth TD in this game ties a school record for rushing TDs in a single game with four other people.

Stanford keeps at it. Gerhard scored with 9:12 left in the game. The Cardinal adds a two-point conversion. OSU leads 38-22.

Since the game is in hand, I’m heading to the field. Postgame blog will be up soon after the game.
