Cliff: Arizona press briefing (updated) Comments

The Oregon State football team is focused for various reasons on opening the Pacific-10 Conference season strong with Arizona coming to town on Saturday.

The Beavers have not won the conference opener since beating Arizona State in 2003, dropping the last five. And rebounding from last weekend’s loss is vital to keep the season moving forward.

Here’s a link to my Tuesday story in the GT on OSU preparing for the Wildcats. And here’s a link to the Arizona scouting report. And check out out the lead note in the notebook. WR Taylor Kavanaugh made the Good Works Team.

An interesting matchup in the game will be OSU’s No. 2 passing offense in the Pac-10 (240 ypg) against Arizona’s No. 2 pass defense in the conference (157.3 ypg).

The Beavers have one turnover in three games, which matches UTEP and Cal for the fewest in the nation at this point. Arizona State and Texas A&M do not have a turnover but have played two games.

It was during last year’s Arizona game that RB Jacquizz Rodgers was lost for the last two games of the season. He injured his shoulder in the first quarter on a tackle by CB Devin Ross.

Rodgers, a sophomore, needs 93 more yards to crack into the OSU career top-10 rushing list.

He and brother, James Rodgers, rank third and fourth in the Pac-10 in all-purpose yards. James averages 159.0 yards per game and Jacquizz
152.7.

Here’s a stat to watch for future stars: S Anthony Watkins leads the team in special teams tackles with four. CB Brandon Hardin is second with three.

There’s no news on injuries. WR Casey Kjos (back) is still hurting. All the old wounded are just making progress.

For the ticket counters out there, OSU says there are about 4,000 tickets left.
