It was a cool, crisp Friday morning for the first Oregon State football team workout of the day. There were a lot of plays run with good give and take with the offense and defense.

And yes, there are more injuries. The biggest one is to true freshman WR Markus Wheaton. He has been beat up pretty good with the day-to-day practice, but a groin pull took him out of his first workout. He’s also battling back pain and turf toe.

WR James Rodgers (knee) missed a second day. S Josh LaGrone (knee) was on crutches. C Alex Linnenkohl (knee) and WR Casey Kjos (back) returned to practice. TE Howard Croom (head) has been out for a week. DT Sioeli Nau sat out but for unknown reasons.

“It was a pretty good group of receivers watching practice today.” Riley said of Wheaton, Rodgers and Darrell Catchings. “But all those guys will be fine.”

No word on the QB Peter Lalich situation with him finding out if the NCAA will grant last season as his redshirt year or not.

There will be some sort of scrimmage Saturday afternoon. Coach Mike Riley said the key starters such as RB Jacquizz Rodgers, QB Sean Canfield will only get a few plays. Then the bulk of it will feature the younger players.

The OL is starting to settle into a regular two-deep. The first stringers are RT Mike Remmers, RG Gregg Peat, Linnenkohl, LG Grant Johnson, LT Michael Philipp. Johnson moved up, while Ryan Pohl slipped from LG to No. 2 C.

Practices remain more than 30 minutes shorter than usual in order to keep players healthy. The younger players get a lot of work at the end of the practice. The below photo is of Riley overseeing the 2012 team.
