Oregon State WR Darrell Catchings is out for the year, OSU announced Monday night. He will need surgery on his broken wrist this week.
The loss of Catchings is a big blow to the Beavers. He has been groomed to be the go-to receiver this season. The split end is the first option in many of OSU’s passing plays.
Two years ago Sammie Stroughter was injured so Catchings, then a true freshman, was thrust into the primary receiver role. He struggled due to inexperience and OSU’s deep threat was almost non-existent.
There was a chance he could return late in the season, but coach Mike Riley decided to keep him out the full season. Catchings did not redshirt, yet, so he can sit out this season and still have two seasons of eligibility starting in 2010.

Well, if we have to take an injury this is the position to do it at.

Cliff – Tough break for Catchings. He really seemed to have developed a nice rapport with Canfield this last Spring. What I find very curious is the use of Wheaton as his immediate replacement. I have heard of nothing but positive remarks regarding Damola Adeniji, plus he is a senior and has a solid understanding of the playbook. Is Wheaton just simply more talented, albeight very inexperienced? Speed is a great asset but experienced route running for the position I would say is equally important. Curious.

Wheaton is fast, a very good athlete. Adeniji is good, but Wheaton has a great, great upside. The coaches are using the philosophy, they might as well go with a guy who will be your guy for the next four years vs. an unproven one-year walk-on guy.

This sucks. And although I've been reading all spring and summer how deep the Beavs are at receiver, I'm still nervous. If that position really was that deep, we wouldn't be talking about starting a true freshman or a senior walk-on. Let me pause to remember all the big catches that Sammie made for first downs last year…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………dang the Beavs are going to miss him.
